Chapter 14

1 Follow1377 after charity,26 and desire2206 spiritual4152 gifts, but rather3123 that you may prophesy.4395

2 For he that speaks2980 in an unknown tongue1100 speaks2980 not to men,444 but to God:2316 for no3762 man3762 understands191 him; however, in the spirit4151 he speaks2980 mysteries.3466

3 But he that prophesies4395 speaks2980 to men444 to edification,3619 and exhortation,3874 and comfort.3889

4 He that speaks2980 in an unknown tongue1100 edifies3618 himself;1438 but he that prophesies4395 edifies3618 the church.1577

5 I would2309 that you all3956 spoke2980 with tongues 1100but rather3123 that you prophesied:4395 for greater3187 is he that prophesies4395 than2228 he that speaks2980 with tongues,1100 except1622 1508 he interpret,1329 that the church1577 may receive2983 edifying.3619

6 Now,3570 brothers,80 if1437 I come2064 to you speaking2980 with tongues,1100 what5101 shall I profit5623 you, except3362 I shall speak2980 to you either2228 by revelation,602 or2228 by knowledge,1108 or2228 by prophesying,4394 or2228 by doctrine?1322

7 And even3676 things without895 life895 giving1325 sound,5456 whether1535 pipe836 or1535 harp,2788 except3362 they give1325 a distinction1293 in the sounds,5353 how4459 shall it be known1097 what3588 is piped832 or2228 harped?2789

8 For if1437 the trumpet4536 give1325 an uncertain82 sound,5456 who5101 shall prepare3903 himself to the battle?4171

9 So3779 likewise2532 you, except3362 you utter1325 by the tongue1100 words3056 easy2154 to be understood,2154 how4459 shall it be known1097 what3588 is spoken?2980 for you shall speak2980 into1519 the air.109

10 There are, it may be, so5118 many5118 kinds1085 of voices5456 in the world,2889 and none3762 of them is without880 signification.880

11 Therefore3767 if1437 I know1492 not the meaning1411 of the voice,5456 I shall be to him that speaks2980 a barbarian,915 and he that speaks2980 shall be a barbarian915 to me.

12 Even2532 so3779 you, for as much1893 as you are zealous2207 of spiritual4151 gifts, seek2212 that you may excel4052 to the edifying3619 of the church.1577

13 Why1355 let him that speaks2980 in an unknown tongue1100 pray4336 that he may interpret.1329

14 For if1437 I pray4336 in an unknown tongue,1100 my spirit4151 prays,4336 but my understanding3563 is unfruitful.175

17 For you truly3303 give thanks2168 well,2573 but the other2087 is not edified.3618

18 I thank2168 my God,2316 I speak2980 with tongues1100 more3123 than you all:3956

19 Yet235 in the church1577 I had rather2309 speak2980 five4002 words3056 with my understanding,3563 that by my voice I might teach2727 others243 also,2532 than2228 ten3463 thousand3463 words3056 in an unknown tongue.1100

20 Brothers,80 be not children3813 in understanding:5424 however,235 in malice2549 be you children,3515 but in understanding5424 be men.5046

21 In the law3551 it is written,1125 With men of other2084 tongues2084 and other2087 lips5491 will I speak2980 to this5129 people;2992 and yet for all3779 that will they not hear1522 me, said3004 the LORD.2962

22 Why5620 tongues1100 are for a sign,4592 not to them that believe,4100 but to them that believe571 not: but prophesying4394 serves not for them that believe571 not, but for them which believe.4100

23 If1437 therefore3767 the whole3650 church1577 be come4905 together4905 into1909 one3588 846 place, and all3956 speak2980 with tongues,1100 and there come1525 in those that are unlearned,2399 or2228 unbelievers,571 will they not say2046 that you are mad?3105

24 But if1437 all3956 prophesy,4395 and there come1525 in one5100 that believes571 not, or2228 one unlearned,2399 he is convinced1651 of all,3956 he is judged350 of all:3956

25 And thus3779 are the secrets2927 of his heart2588 made1096 manifest;5318 and so3779 falling4098 down on1909 his face4383 he will worship4352 God,2316 and report518 that God2316 is in you of a truth.3689

26 How5101 is it then,3767 brothers?80 when3752 you come4905 together,4905 every1538 one of you has2192 a psalm,5568 has2192 a doctrine,1322 has2192 a tongue,1100 has2192 a revelation,602 has2192 an interpretation.2058 Let all3956 things be done1096 to edifying.3619

27 If1535 any5100 man speak2980 in an unknown tongue,1100 let it be by two,1417 or2228 at the most4119 by three,5140 and that by course;3313 and let one1520 interpret.1329

28 But if1437 there be no3361 interpreter,1328 let him keep4601 silence4601 in the church;1577 and let him speak2980 to himself,1438 and to God.2316

29 Let the prophets4396 speak2980 two1417 or2228 three,5140 and let the other243 judge.1252

30 If1437 any thing be revealed601 to another243 that sits2521 by, let the first4413 hold4601 his peace.4601

31 For you may1410 all3956 prophesy4395 one2596 1520 by one,1520 that all3956 may learn,3129 and all3956 may be comforted.3870

32 And the spirits4151 of the prophets4396 are subject5293 to the prophets.4396

33 For God2316 is not the author of confusion,181 but of peace,1515 as in all3956 churches1577 of the saints.40

34 Let your5216 women1135 keep4601 silence4601 in the churches:1577 for it is not permitted2010 to them to speak;2980 but they are commanded to be under5293 obedience 5293as also2532 said3004 the law.3551

35 And if1487 they will2309 learn3129 any5100 thing, let them ask1905 their husbands435 at1722 home:3624 for it is a shame149 for women1135 to speak2980 in the church.1577

36 What?2228 came1831 the word3056 of God2316 out from you? or2228 came2658 it to you only?3441

37 If1487 any1536 man think1380 himself to be a prophet,4396 or2228 spiritual,4152 let him acknowledge1921 that the things that I write1125 to you are the commandments1785 of the Lord.2962

38 But if1487 any1536 man be ignorant,50 let him be ignorant.50

2 那說所不知道的［unknown］方言的，原不是對人說，乃是對神說。因為沒有人聽出來；然而，他在心靈裏卻是講說各樣的奧秘。

3 但說預言［prophesieth］的，是對人說，要造就、勸勉［exhortation］、安慰［comfort］人。

4 說所不知道的［unknown］方言的，是造就自己；說預言［prophesieth］的，乃是造就教會。

5 我願意你們都說方言，更願意你們說預言［prophesied］；因為說方言的，若不翻出來，使教會被造就，那說預言［prophesieth］的，就比他強了。

6 弟兄們，我到你們那裏去，若只說方言，不用啟示，或知識，或預言，或道理［doctrine］，給你們講解，我與你們有甚麼益處呢？

7 就是那有聲無氣的物，或簫，或琴，若發出來的聲音沒有分別，怎能知道所吹所彈的是甚麼呢？

8 若吹無定的號聲，誰能預備打仗呢？

9 你們也是如此。舌頭若不說容易明白的話，怎能知道所說的是甚麼呢？這就是向空氣［air］說話了。

10 世上的聲音，或者甚多，卻沒有一樣是無意思的。

11 我若不明白那聲音的意思，這說話的人必以我為化外之人，我也以他為化外之人。

12 你們也是如此，既是切慕屬靈的恩賜，就當求多得造就教會的恩賜。

13 所以那說所不知道的［unknown］方言的，就當求著能翻出來。

14 我若用所不知道的［unknown］方言禱告，是我的靈禱告，但我的悟性沒有果效。

15 這卻怎麼樣呢？我要用靈禱告，也要用悟性禱告；我要用靈歌唱，也要用悟性歌唱。

16 不然，你用靈祝福［bless］，那在座不通方言的人，既然不明白你的話，怎能在你感謝的時候說「阿們」呢？

17 你感謝的固然是好，無奈不能造就別人。

18 我感謝我的［my］神，我說方言比你們眾人還多。

19 但在教會中，我［I］也［also］寧可用悟性說五句教導人的話，過於［than］說萬句所不知道的［unknown］方言。

20 弟兄們，在悟性［understanding］上不要作小孩子。然而，你們［ye］在惡事上要作小孩子［children］，在悟性［understanding］上總要作大人。

21 律法上記著：「主說：『我要用外邦人的舌頭和外邦人的嘴唇向這百姓說話；雖然如此，他們還是不聽從我。』」

22 這樣看來，說方言不是為信的人作證據，乃是為不信的人；說預言［prophesying］不是為不信的人服事［serveth］，乃是為信的人。

23 所以，全教會聚在一處的時候，若都說方言，有［that］不通方言的，或是不信的人進來，豈不說你們癲狂了嗎？

24 若都說預言［prophesy］，有［that］不信的，或是不通方言的人進來，就被眾人勸醒，被眾人審明，

25 他心裏的隱情顯露出來，就必將臉伏地，敬拜神，說：「神真是在你們中間了。」

26 弟兄們，這卻怎麼樣呢？你們聚會的時候，各人或有詩歌，或有道理［doctrine］，或有方言［tongue］，或有啟示［revelation］，或有翻出來的話，凡事都當造就人。

27 若有人［man］說所不知道的［unknown］方言，只好兩個人，至多三個人，且要輪流著說，也要一個人翻出來。

28 若沒有人翻，就當在教會［church］中閉口，只對自己和神說就是了。

29 至於作先知講道的，只好兩個人或是三個人，其餘的就當慎思明辨。

30 若旁邊坐著的得了啟示，那先說話的就當閉口不言。

31 因為你們都可以一個一個的說預言［prophesy］，叫眾人學習［learn］，叫眾人得安慰［comforted］。

32 先知的靈原是順服先知的；

33 因為神不是叫人混亂，乃是叫人安靜，像在聖徒的眾教會一樣［as in all churches of the saints］。

34 你們的婦女在眾教會中要閉口不言［Let your women keep silence in the churches］，因為不准她們說話。她們總要順服，正如律法所說的。

35 她們若要學甚麼，可以在家裏問自己的丈夫，因為婦女在會中說話原是可恥的。

36 神的道理豈是從你們出來嗎？豈是單臨到你們嗎？

37 若有人以為自己是先知，或是屬靈的，就該知道，我所寫給你們的是主的命令。

38 若有不知道的，就由他不知道吧。

39 所以我弟兄們，你們要切慕說預言［prophesy］，也不要禁止說方言。

40 凡事都要規規矩矩的按著次序行。
