Chapter 34

1 Josiah2977 was eight8083 years8141 old1121 when he began to reign,4427 and he reigned4427 in Jerusalem3389 one259 and thirty7970 years.8141

2 And he did6213 that which was right3477 in the sight5869 of the LORD,3068 and walked3212 in the ways1870 of David1732 his father,1 and declined5493 neither3808 to the right3225 hand,3225 nor to the left.8040

3 For in the eighth8083 year8141 of his reign,4427 while he was yet5750 young,5288 he began2490 to seek1875 after the God430 of David1732 his father:1 and in the twelfth8147 6240 year8141 he began2490 to purge2891 Judah3063 and Jerusalem3389 from the high1116 places, and the groves,842 and the carved6456 images, and the molten4541 images.

4 And they broke5422 down5422 the altars4196 of Baalim1168 in his presence;6440 and the images,2553 that were on high4605 above5921 them, he cut1438 down;1438 and the groves,842 and the carved6456 images, and the molten4541 images, he broke7665 in pieces, and made dust1854 of them, and strewed2236 it on the graves6913 of them that had sacrificed2076 to them.

5 And he burnt8313 the bones6106 of the priests3548 on their altars,4196 and cleansed2891 Judah3063 and Jerusalem.3389

6 And so did he in the cities5892 of Manasseh,4519 and Ephraim,669 and Simeon,8095 even to Naphtali,5321 with their mattocks2719 round5439 about.

7 And when he had broken5422 down5422 the altars4196 and the groves,842 and had beaten3807 the graven6456 images6456 into powder,1854 and cut1438 down1438 all3605 the idols2553 throughout all3605 the land776 of Israel,3478 he returned7725 to Jerusalem.3389

8 Now in the eighteenth6240 year8141 of his reign,4427 when he had purged2891 the land,776 and the house,1004 he sent7971 Shaphan8227 the son1121 of Azaliah,683 and Maaseiah4641 the governor8269 of the city,5892 and Joah3098 the son1121 of Joahaz3098 the recorder,2142 to repair2388 the house1004 of the LORD3068 his God.430

9 And when they came935 to Hilkiah2518 the high1419 priest,3548 they delivered5414 the money3701 that was brought935 into the house1004 of God,430 which834 the Levites3881 that kept8104 the doors5592 had gathered622 of the hand3027 of Manasseh4519 and Ephraim,669 and of all3605 the remnant7611 of Israel,3478 and of all3605 Judah3063 and Benjamin;1144 and they returned7725 to Jerusalem.3389

10 And they put5414 it in the hand3027 of the workmen6213 4399 that had the oversight6485 of the house1004 of the LORD,3068 and they gave5414 it to the workmen6213 4399 that worked6213 in the house1004 of the LORD,3068 to repair918 and amend2388 the house:1004

11 Even to the artificers2796 and builders1129 gave5414 they it, to buy7069 hewn4274 stone,68 and timber6086 for couplings,4226 and to floor7136 the houses1004 which834 the kings4428 of Judah3063 had destroyed.7843

12 And the men582 did6213 the work4399 faithfully:530 and the overseers6485 of them were Jahath3189 and Obadiah,5662 the Levites,3881 of the sons1121 of Merari;4847 and Zechariah2148 and Meshullam,4918 of the sons1121 of the Kohathites,6956 to set5329 it forward; and other of the Levites,3881 all3605 that could skill995 of instruments3627 of music.7892

13 Also they were over5921 the bearers5449 of burdens,5449 and were overseers5329 of all3605 that worked6213 the work4399 in any3605 manner of service:5656 and of the Levites3881 there were scribes,5608 and officers,7860 and porters.7778

14 And when they brought3318 out the money3701 that was brought935 into the house1004 of the LORD,3068 Hilkiah2518 the priest3548 found4672 a book5612 of the law8451 of the LORD3068 given by Moses.4872

15 And Hilkiah2518 answered6030 and said559 to Shaphan8227 the scribe,5608 I have found4672 the book5612 of the law8451 in the house1004 of the LORD.3068 And Hilkiah2518 delivered5414 the book5612 to Shaphan.8227

16 And Shaphan8227 carried935 the book5612 to the king,4428 and brought7725 the king4428 word1697 back7725 again,5750 saying,559 All3605 that was committed5414 to your servants,5650 they do6213 it.

17 And they have gathered5413 together the money3701 that was found4672 in the house1004 of the LORD,3068 and have delivered5414 it into5921 the hand3027 of the overseers,6485 and to the hand3027 of the workmen6213 4399.

18 Then Shaphan8227 the scribe5608 told5046 the king,4428 saying,559 Hilkiah2518 the priest3548 has given5414 me a book.5612 And Shaphan8227 read7121 it before6440 the king.4428

19 And it came1961 to pass, when the king4428 had heard8085 the words1697 of the law,8451 that he rent7167 his clothes.899

20 And the king4428 commanded6680 Hilkiah,2518 and Ahikam296 the son1121 of Shaphan,8227 and Abdon5658 the son1121 of Micah,4318 and Shaphan8227 the scribe,5608 and Asaiah6222 a servant5650 of the king's,4428 saying,559

21 Go,3212 inquire1875 of the LORD3068 for me, and for them that are left7604 in Israel3478 and in Judah,3063 concerning5921 the words1697 of the book5612 that is found:4672 for great1419 is the wrath2534 of the LORD3068 that is poured5413 out on us, because3282 834 our fathers1 have not kept8104 the word1697 of the LORD,3068 to do6213 after all3605 that is written3789 in this2088 book.5612

22 And Hilkiah,2518 and they that the king4428 had appointed, went3212 to Huldah2468 the prophetess,5031 the wife802 of Shallum7967 the son1121 of Tikvath,8616 the son1121 of Hasrah,2641 keeper8104 of the wardrobe;899 (now she dwelled3427 in Jerusalem3389 in the college:4932) and they spoke1696 to her to that effect.

23 And she answered559 them, Thus3541 said559 the LORD3068 God430 of Israel,3478 Tell559 you the man376 that sent7971 you to me,

24 Thus3541 said559 the LORD,3068 Behold,2005 I will bring935 evil7451 on this2088 place,4725 and on the inhabitants3427 thereof, even all3605 the curses423 that are written3789 in the book5612 which834 they have read7121 before6440 the king4428 of Judah:3063

25 Because8478 834 they have forsaken5800 me, and have burned6999 incense6999 to other312 gods,430 that they might provoke me to anger3707 with all3605 the works4639 of their hands;3027 therefore my wrath2534 shall be poured5413 out on this2088 place,4725 and shall not be quenched.3518

26 And as for the king4428 of Judah,3063 who sent7971 you to inquire1875 of the LORD,3068 so shall you say559 to him, Thus3541 said559 the LORD3068 God430 of Israel3478 concerning the words1697 which834 you have heard;8085

27 Because3282 your heart3824 was tender,7401 and you did humble3665 yourself before6440 God,430 when you heard8085 his words1697 against5921 this2088 place,4725 and against5921 the inhabitants3427 thereof, and humbled3665 yourself before6440 me, and did rend7167 your clothes,899 and weep1058 before6440 me; I have even heard8085 you also,1571 said5002 the LORD.3068

28 Behold,2005 I will gather622 you to your fathers,1 and you shall be gathered622 to your grave6913 in peace,7965 neither3808 shall your eyes5869 see7200 all3605 the evil7451 that I will bring935 on this2088 place,4725 and on the inhabitants3427 of the same. So they brought7725 the king4428 word1697 again.7725

29 Then the king4428 sent7971 and gathered622 together all3605 the elders2205 of Judah3063 and Jerusalem.3389

30 And the king4428 went5927 up into the house1004 of the LORD,3068 and all3605 the men376 of Judah,3063 and the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem,3389 and the priests,3548 and the Levites,3881 and all3605 the people,5971 great1419 and small:6996 and he read7121 in their ears241 all3605 the words1697 of the book5612 of the covenant1285 that was found4672 in the house1004 of the LORD.3068

31 And the king4428 stood5975 in his place,5977 and made3772 a covenant1285 before6440 the LORD,3068 to walk3212 after310 the LORD,3068 and to keep8104 his commandments,4687 and his testimonies,5715 and his statutes,2706 with all3605 his heart,3824 and with all3605 his soul,5315 to perform6213 the words1697 of the covenant1285 which are written3789 in this2088 book.5612

32 And he caused all3605 that were present4672 in Jerusalem3389 and Benjamin1144 to stand5975 to it. And the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem3389 did6213 according to the covenant1285 of God,430 the God430 of their fathers.1

33 And Josiah2977 took away5493 all3605 the abominations8441 out of all3605 the countries776 that pertained to the children1121 of Israel,3478 and made all3605 that were present4672 in Israel3478 to serve,5647 even to serve5647 the LORD3068 their God.430 And all3605 his days3117 they departed5493 not from following310 the LORD,3068 the God430 of their fathers.1

Chapter 34

1 JOSIAH was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem.

2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and he turned neither to the right hand nor to the left.

3 For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was still a little boy, he began to pray to the LORD the God of David his father; and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Moreover he began to demolish altars, idols, carved images, and idol temples,

4 And the decorations, necklaces, bells, and all the trees that were made for idols, he broke in pieces and ground them to dust and scattered their ashes upon the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.

5 And the bones of the priests who served them, he dug out of their graves and brought them and burned them, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.

6 And so did he in the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon and Naphtali, in their streets round about.

7 And when he had broken down the altars and smashed in pieces the images, and ground them into dust and scattered it throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.

8 Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land of Israel and his own house, he sent for Shaphan the son of Azaliah and Maasiah the scribe of the city, and said to them, Go, repair the house of the LORD your God.

9 And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, which the Levites the keepers of the doors had collected from Manasseh and Ephraim and from all the remnant of Israel and from all Judah and Benjamin and from all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

10 And they delivered it into the hands of the workmen who had the oversight of the house of the LORD, and they gave it to the workmen who did the work in the house of the LORD, to repair and to plaster the house;

11 And they gave it also to the carpenters and to the masons and to those who bought precious stones and timber for the repairing and for the plastering of the house which the kings of Judah had destroyed.

12 And the men did the work of the sanctuary faithfully; and the overseers over them were Nahat and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Shallum, of the sons of the Kohathites, and the singers and the Levites who played with the instruments of music,

13 And all those who did the work in any manner of service; and of the Levites there were scribes and officers and porters who acted as overseers.

14 And when they carried out the money that had been brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the LORD given by Moses.

15 And Hilkiah the priest said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah the priest gave the book to Shaphan.

16 And Shaphan the scribe told the king what Hilkiah had told him, and brought him word, saying, All that you have committed to your servants, they do.

17 And they have spent the money for the repair of the house of the LORD, and have given account to the overseers and to the workmen.

18 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest has given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.

19 And it came to pass when the king had heard the words of the law, he tore his clothes.

20 Then the king commanded Hilkiah and Ahikam the son of Shaphan and Abchor the son of Micah and Shaphan the scribe and Asaiah the steward of the king's household, saying,

21 Go, pray before the LORD for me and for the people of Israel and Judah concerning the words of this book that is found; for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not hearkened to the words of the LORD to do after all that is written concerning us in this book.

22 So Hilkiah and those whom the king had appointed, went to Huldi the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Hisdah the keeper of the vessels (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in meditation) and they spoke to her according to the king's command.

23 And she said to them. Thus says the LORD God of Israel: Tell the man who sent you to me,

24 Thus says the LORD: Behold, I will bring evil upon this place and upon its inhabitants, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah,

25 Because they have forsaken me and have worshipped other gods and have provoked me to anger with the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.

26 And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, SO shall you say to him: Thus says the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which you have heard:

27 Because your heart was humbled, and you did tremble before the LORD when you heard these things which I will bring against this place and against its inhabitants, and have humbled yourself before me and have rent your clothes and wept before me; I have heard you also, says the LORD.

28 Therefore, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the evil that I will bring upon this place and upon its inhabitants. So they brought back the word to the king.

29 Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.

30 And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the priests and the Levites and all the people, great and small; and he read before them all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD.

31 And the king stood in his place and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his testimonies, with all his heart and with his whole soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.

32 And he caused all who were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers.

33 And Josiah took away all the abominations which the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel, and he made all the people who were found in Israel to serve the LORD their God. And they did not go astray from following the LORD God of their fathers.

15 And Hilkiah the priest said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah the priest gave the book to Shaphan.

16 And Shaphan8227 carried935 the book5612 to the king,4428 and brought7725 the king4428 word1697 back7725 again,5750 saying,559 All3605 that was committed5414 to your servants,5650 they do6213 it.

16 And Shaphan the scribe told the king what Hilkiah had told him, and brought him word, saying, All that you have committed to your servants, they do.

17 And they have gathered5413 together the money3701 that was found4672 in the house1004 of the LORD,3068 and have delivered5414 it into5921 the hand3027 of the overseers,6485 and to the hand3027 of the workmen6213 4399.

17 And they have spent the money for the repair of the house of the LORD, and have given account to the overseers and to the workmen.

18 Then Shaphan8227 the scribe5608 told5046 the king,4428 saying,559 Hilkiah2518 the priest3548 has given5414 me a book.5612 And Shaphan8227 read7121 it before6440 the king.4428

18 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest has given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.

19 And it came1961 to pass, when the king4428 had heard8085 the words1697 of the law,8451 that he rent7167 his clothes.899

19 And it came to pass when the king had heard the words of the law, he tore his clothes.

20 Then the king commanded Hilkiah and Ahikam the son of Shaphan and Abchor the son of Micah and Shaphan the scribe and Asaiah the steward of the king's household, saying,

21 Go, pray before the LORD for me and for the people of Israel and Judah concerning the words of this book that is found; for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not hearkened to the words of the LORD to do after all that is written concerning us in this book.

22 So Hilkiah and those whom the king had appointed, went to Huldi the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Hisdah the keeper of the vessels (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in meditation) and they spoke to her according to the king's command.

23 And she answered559 them, Thus3541 said559 the LORD3068 God430 of Israel,3478 Tell559 you the man376 that sent7971 you to me,

23 And she said to them. Thus says the LORD God of Israel: Tell the man who sent you to me,

24 Thus says the LORD: Behold, I will bring evil upon this place and upon its inhabitants, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah,

25 Because they have forsaken me and have worshipped other gods and have provoked me to anger with the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.

26 And as for the king4428 of Judah,3063 who sent7971 you to inquire1875 of the LORD,3068 so shall you say559 to him, Thus3541 said559 the LORD3068 God430 of Israel3478 concerning the words1697 which834 you have heard;8085

26 And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, SO shall you say to him: Thus says the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which you have heard:

27 Because3282 your heart3824 was tender,7401 and you did humble3665 yourself before6440 God,430 when you heard8085 his words1697 against5921 this2088 place,4725 and against5921 the inhabitants3427 thereof, and humbled3665 yourself before6440 me, and did rend7167 your clothes,899 and weep1058 before6440 me; I have even heard8085 you also,1571 said5002 the LORD.3068

27 Because your heart was humbled, and you did tremble before the LORD when you heard these things which I will bring against this place and against its inhabitants, and have humbled yourself before me and have rent your clothes and wept before me; I have heard you also, says the LORD.

28 Therefore, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the evil that I will bring upon this place and upon its inhabitants. So they brought back the word to the king.

29 Then the king4428 sent7971 and gathered622 together all3605 the elders2205 of Judah3063 and Jerusalem.3389

29 Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.

30 And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the priests and the Levites and all the people, great and small; and he read before them all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD.

31 And the king stood in his place and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his testimonies, with all his heart and with his whole soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.

32 And he caused all3605 that were present4672 in Jerusalem3389 and Benjamin1144 to stand5975 to it. And the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem3389 did6213 according to the covenant1285 of God,430 the God430 of their fathers.1

32 And he caused all who were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers.

33 And Josiah took away all the abominations which the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel, and he made all the people who were found in Israel to serve the LORD their God. And they did not go astray from following the LORD God of their fathers.
