Chapter 16

1 And when David1732 was a little4592 past5674 the top7218 of the hill, behold,2009 Ziba6717 the servant5288 of Mephibosheth4648 met7122 him, with a couple6776 of asses2543 saddled,2280 and on them two hundred3967 loaves of bread,3899 and an hundred3967 bunches6778 of raisins,6778 and an hundred3967 of summer7019 fruits, and a bottle5035 of wine.3196

2 And the king4428 said559 to Ziba,6717 What4100 mean you by these?428 And Ziba6717 said,559 The asses2543 be for the king's4428 household1004 to ride7392 on; and the bread3899 and summer7019 fruit for the young5288 men to eat;398 and the wine,3196 that such as be faint3287 in the wilderness4057 may drink.8354

3 And the king4428 said,559 And where346 is your master's113 son?1121 And Ziba6717 said559 to the king,4428 Behold,2009 he stays3427 at Jerusalem:3389 for he said,559 To day3117 shall the house1004 of Israel3478 restore7725 me the kingdom4468 of my father.1

4 Then said559 the king4428 to Ziba,6717 Behold,2009 your are all3605 that pertained to Mephibosheth.4648 And Ziba6717 said,559 I humbly7812 beseech you that I may find4672 grace2580 in your sight,5869 my lord,113 O king.4428

5 And when king4428 David1732 came935 to Bahurim,980 behold,2009 there8033 came3318 out a man376 of the family4940 of the house1004 of Saul,7586 whose name8034 was Shimei,8096 the son1121 of Gera:1617 he came3318 forth,3318 and cursed7043 still as he came.3318

6 And he cast5619 stones68 at David,1732 and at all3605 the servants5650 of king4428 David:1732 and all3605 the people5971 and all3605 the mighty1368 men were on his right3225 hand3225 and on his left.8040

7 And thus3541 said559 Shimei8096 when he cursed,7043 Come3318 out, come3318 out, you bloody1818 man,376 and you man376 of Belial:1100

8 The LORD3068 has returned7725 on you all3605 the blood1818 of the house1004 of Saul,7586 in whose834 stead8478 you have reigned;4427 and the LORD3068 has delivered5414 the kingdom4410 into the hand3027 of Absalom53 your son:1121 and, behold,2009 you are taken in your mischief,7451 because3588 you are a bloody1818 man.376

9 Then said559 Abishai52 the son1121 of Zeruiah6870 to the king,4428 Why4100 should this2088 dead4191 dog3611 curse7043 my lord113 the king?4428 let me go5674 over,5674 I pray4994 you, and take5493 off his head.7218

10 And the king4428 said,559 What4100 have I to do with you, you sons1121 of Zeruiah?6870 so3588 let him curse,7043 because3588 the LORD3068 has said559 to him, Curse7043 David.1732 Who4310 shall then say,559 Why4069 have you done6213 so?3651

11 And David1732 said559 to Abishai,52 and to all3605 his servants,5650 Behold,2009 my son,1121 which834 came3318 forth3318 of my bowels,4578 seeks1245 my life:5315 how637 much637 more now6258 may this Benjamite1145 do it? let3240 him alone, and let3240 him curse;7043 for the LORD3068 has bidden559 him.

12 It may be that the LORD3068 will look7200 on my affliction,5869 and that the LORD3068 will requite7725 me good2896 for his cursing7045 this2088 day.3117

13 And as David1732 and his men582 went3212 by the way,1870 Shimei8096 went1980 along on the hill's2022 side6763 over5980 against5980 him, and cursed7043 as he went,1980 and threw5619 stones68 at5980 him, and cast6080 dust.6083

14 And the king,4428 and all3605 the people5971 that were with him, came935 weary,5889 and refreshed5314 themselves there.8033

15 And Absalom,53 and all3605 the people5971 the men376 of Israel,3478 came935 to Jerusalem,3389 and Ahithophel302 with him.

16 And it came1961 to pass, when834 Hushai2365 the Archite,757 David's1732 friend,7463 was come935 to Absalom,53 that Hushai2365 said559 to Absalom,53 God save2421 the king,4428 God save2421 the king.4428

17 And Absalom53 said559 to Hushai,2365 Is this2088 your kindness2617 to your friend?7453 why4100 went1980 you not with your friend?7453

18 And Hushai2365 said559 to Absalom,53 No;3808 but whom834 the LORD,3068 and this2088 people,5971 and all3605 the men376 of Israel,3478 choose,977 his will I be, and with him will I abide.3427

19 And again,8145 whom4310 should I serve?5647 should I not serve5647 in the presence6440 of his son?1121 as I have served5647 in your father's1 presence,6440 so3651 will I be in your presence.6440

20 Then said559 Absalom53 to Ahithophel,302 Give3051 counsel6098 among you what4100 we shall do.6213

21 And Ahithophel302 said559 to Absalom,53 Go935 in to your father's1 concubines,6370 which834 he has left5117 to keep8104 the house;1004 and all3605 Israel3478 shall hear8085 that you are abhorred887 of your father:1 then shall the hands3027 of all3605 that are with you be strong.2388

22 So they spread5186 Absalom53 a tent168 on the top1406 of the house;1004 and Absalom53 went935 in to his father's1 concubines6370 in the sight5869 of all3605 Israel.3478

23 And the counsel6098 of Ahithophel,302 which834 he counceled3289 in those1992 days,3117 was as if a man376 had inquired7592 at the oracle1697 of God:430 so3651 was all3605 the counsel6098 of Ahithophel302 both1571 with David1732 and with Absalom.53

Chapter 16

1 AND when David had passed a little beyond the place where he used to worship, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth came to meet him, with a couple of asses, laden with two hundred loaves of bread and a hundred bunches of raisins and a hundred cakes of figs and a skin of wine.

2 And the king said to Ziba, Where did you get these? Ziba said to him, The asses are to carry the burden of the king's household; and the bread and fig cakes are for the young men to eat, and the wine, that those who faint in the wilderness may drink.

3 And the king said to him, Where is your master's son? Ziba said to him, Behold he remains at Jerusalem; for he said, Today shall the house of Israel restore to me the kingdom of Saul my father.

4 Then David said to Ziba, Behold, all that belonged to Mephibosheth is given to you. And Ziba said to him, I have plenty, and I have found grace in your sight, my lord, O king.

5 And when King David came to Beth-hurim, behold, there came out from there a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he came forth and cursed David;

6 And he threw stones at him and at all his servants and at all his people and at all his servants who were on his right hand and on his left.

7 And thus said Shimei to David when he cursed him, Get out, get out, you bloody man, you wicked man;

8 The LORD has requited upon you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead you have reigned; and the LORD has delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom your son; and, behold, you have been requited for your evil, because you are a bloody man.

9 Then Abishai the son of Zoriah said to David, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and take off his head.

10 And King David said to him, What is it to me and to you, O sons of Zoriah? Let him curse, it is the LORD who has told him to curse David. Therefore who can say to me, Why has this happened?

11 And David said to Abishai and to all his servants, Behold, my own son, who came forth from my loins, seeks my life; so now let this Benjamite alone, let him curse; for God has bidden him.

12 It may be the LORD will look on my affliction and requite me good for his cursing this day.

13 And as David and his servants went on the way, Shimei walked along the mountain side opposite him and cursed him as he went and threw stones at him and cast dust at him.

14 And the king and all the people who were with him arrived at their destination weary, and they refreshed themselves there.

15 And Absalom and all the people who were with him and all Israel came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel with him.

16 And when Hushai the Archite, David's friend, came to Absalom, Hushai said to Absalom, Long live the king! long live the king!

17 And Absalom said to Hushai, Is this your kindness to your friend? Why did you not go with your friend?

18 And Hushai said to Absalom. No; but whom the LORD and this people and all Israel have chosen, with him will I dwell, and his will I be.

19 And again, whom should I serve? I have no choice. As I have served in your father's presence, so will I serve before you.

20 Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, Give me counsel, as to what we shall do.

21 And Ahithophel said to Absalom, Go in to your father's concubines, whom he has left to keep his house; and when all Israel shall hear that you have gone in to your father's concubines, then shall the hands of all who are with you be strengthened.

22 So they pitched a tent for Absalom upon the roof; and Absalom went in to his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel.

23 And the counsel of Ahithophel which he gave in those days was as if a man had inquired at the oracle of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

10 And King David said to him, What is it to me and to you, O sons of Zoriah? Let him curse, it is the LORD who has told him to curse David. Therefore who can say to me, Why has this happened?

11 And David1732 said559 to Abishai,52 and to all3605 his servants,5650 Behold,2009 my son,1121 which834 came3318 forth3318 of my bowels,4578 seeks1245 my life:5315 how637 much637 more now6258 may this Benjamite1145 do it? let3240 him alone, and let3240 him curse;7043 for the LORD3068 has bidden559 him.

12 It may be the LORD will look on my affliction and requite me good for his cursing this day.

13 And as David1732 and his men582 went3212 by the way,1870 Shimei8096 went1980 along on the hill's2022 side6763 over5980 against5980 him, and cursed7043 as he went,1980 and threw5619 stones68 at5980 him, and cast6080 dust.6083

13 And as David and his servants went on the way, Shimei walked along the mountain side opposite him and cursed him as he went and threw stones at him and cast dust at him.

15 And Absalom and all the people who were with him and all Israel came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel with him.

16 And it came1961 to pass, when834 Hushai2365 the Archite,757 David's1732 friend,7463 was come935 to Absalom,53 that Hushai2365 said559 to Absalom,53 God save2421 the king,4428 God save2421 the king.4428

16 And when Hushai the Archite, David's friend, came to Absalom, Hushai said to Absalom, Long live the king! long live the king!

17 And Absalom53 said559 to Hushai,2365 Is this2088 your kindness2617 to your friend?7453 why4100 went1980 you not with your friend?7453

17 And Absalom said to Hushai, Is this your kindness to your friend? Why did you not go with your friend?

18 And Hushai2365 said559 to Absalom,53 No;3808 but whom834 the LORD,3068 and this2088 people,5971 and all3605 the men376 of Israel,3478 choose,977 his will I be, and with him will I abide.3427

18 And Hushai said to Absalom. No; but whom the LORD and this people and all Israel have chosen, with him will I dwell, and his will I be.

19 And again,8145 whom4310 should I serve?5647 should I not serve5647 in the presence6440 of his son?1121 as I have served5647 in your father's1 presence,6440 so3651 will I be in your presence.6440

19 And again, whom should I serve? I have no choice. As I have served in your father's presence, so will I serve before you.

20 Then said559 Absalom53 to Ahithophel,302 Give3051 counsel6098 among you what4100 we shall do.6213

20 Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, Give me counsel, as to what we shall do.

21 And Ahithophel said to Absalom, Go in to your father's concubines, whom he has left to keep his house; and when all Israel shall hear that you have gone in to your father's concubines, then shall the hands of all who are with you be strengthened.

23 And the counsel of Ahithophel which he gave in those days was as if a man had inquired at the oracle of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.
