Chapter 12

1 And Rehoboam7346 went1980 to Shechem:7927 for3588 all3605 Israel3478 were come935 to Shechem7927 to make him king.4427 853

2 And it came to pass,1961 when Jeroboam3379 the son1121 of Nebat,5028 who1931 was yet5750 in Egypt,4714 heard8085 of it, (for834 he was fled1272 from the presence4480 6440 of king4428 Solomon,8010 and Jeroboam3379 dwelt3427 in Egypt;)4714

3 That they sent7971 and called7121 him. And Jeroboam3379 and all3605 the congregation6951 of Israel3478 came,935 and spoke1696 unto413 Rehoboam,7346 saying,559

4 Thy father1 made853 our yoke5923 grievous:7185 now6258 therefore make thou859 the grievous7186 service4480 5656 of thy father,1 and his heavy3515 yoke4480 5923 which834 he put5414 upon5921 us, lighter,7043 and we will serve5647 thee.

5 And he said559 unto413 them, Depart1980 yet5750 for three7969 days,3117 then come again7725 to413 me. And the people5971 departed.1980

6 And king4428 Rehoboam7346 consulted3289 with854 the old men,2205 that834 stood5975 853 before6440 Solomon8010 his father1 while1961 he yet lived,2416 and said,559 How349 do ye859 advise3289 that I may answer7725 1697 853 this2088 people?5971

7 And they spoke1696 unto413 him, saying,559 If518 thou wilt be1961 a servant5650 unto this2088 people5971 this day,3117 and wilt serve5647 them, and answer6030 them, and speak1696 good2896 words1697 to413 them, then they will be1961 thy servants5650 forever.3605 3117

8 But he forsook5800 853 the counsel6098 of the old men,2205 which834 they had given3289 him, and consulted3289 with854 the young men3206 that834 were grown up1431 with854 him, and which834 stood5975 before6440 him:

9 And he said559 unto413 them, What4100 counsel3289 give ye859 that we may answer7725 1697 853 this2088 people,5971 who834 have spoken1696 to413 me, saying,559 Make the yoke5923 which834 thy father1 did put5414 upon5921 us lighter?7043

10 And the young men3206 that834 were grown up1431 with854 him spoke1696 unto413 him, saying,559 Thus3541 shalt thou speak559 unto this2088 people5971 that834 spoke1696 unto413 thee, saying,559 Thy father1 made853 our yoke5923 heavy,3513 but make thou859 it lighter7043 unto4480 5921 us; thus3541 shalt thou say1696 unto413 them, My little6995 finger shall be thicker5666 than my father's1 loins.4480 4975

11 And now6258 whereas my father1 did lade6006 5921 you with a heavy3515 yoke,5923 I589 will add3254 to5921 your yoke:5923 my father1 hath chastised3256 you with whips,7752 but I589 will chastise3256 you with scorpions.6137

12 So Jeroboam3379 and all3605 the people5971 came935 to413 Rehoboam7346 the third7992 day,3117 as834 the king4428 had appointed,1696 saying,559 Come7725 to413 me again the third7992 day.3117

13 And the king4428 answered6030 853 the people5971 roughly,7186 and forsook5800 853 the old men's2205 counsel6098 that834 they gave3289 him;

14 And spoke1696 to413 them after the counsel6098 of the young men,3206 saying,559 My father1 made853 your yoke5923 heavy,3513 and I589 will add3254 to5921 your yoke:5923 my father1 also chastised3256 you with whips,7752 but I589 will chastise3256 you with scorpions.6137

15 Wherefore the king4428 hearkened8085 not3808 unto413 the people;5971 for3588 the cause5438 was1961 from4480 5973 the LORD,3068 that4616 he might perform6965 853 his saying,1697 which834 the LORD3068 spoke1696 by3027 Ahijah281 the Shilonite7888 unto413 Jeroboam3379 the son1121 of Nebat.5028

16 So when all3605 Israel3478 saw7200 that3588 the king4428 hearkened8085 not3808 unto413 them, the people5971 answered7725 1697 853 the king,4428 saying,559 What4100 portion2506 have we in David?1732 neither3808 have we inheritance5159 in the son1121 of Jesse:3448 to your tents,168 O Israel:3478 now6258 see7200 to thine own house,1004 David.1732 So Israel3478 departed1980 unto their tents.168

17 But as for the children1121 of Israel3478 which dwelt3427 in the cities5892 of Judah,3063 Rehoboam7346 reigned4427 over5921 them.

18 Then king4428 Rehoboam7346 sent7971 853 Adoram,151 who834 was over5921 the tribute;4522 and all3605 Israel3478 stoned7275 him with stones,68 that he died.4191 Therefore king4428 Rehoboam7346 made speed553 to get him up5927 to his chariot,4818 to flee5127 to Jerusalem.3389

19 So Israel3478 rebelled6586 against the house1004 of David1732 unto5704 this2088 day.3117

20 And it came to pass,1961 when all3605 Israel3478 heard8085 that3588 Jeroboam3379 was come again,7725 that they sent7971 and called7121 him unto413 the congregation,5712 and made him king4427 853 over5921 all3605 Israel:3478 there was1961 none3808 that followed310 the house1004 of David,1732 but2108 the tribe7626 of Judah3063 only.905

21 And when Rehoboam7346 was come935 to Jerusalem,3389 he assembled6950 853 all3605 the house1004 of Judah,3063 with854 the tribe7626 of Benjamin,1144 a hundred3967 and fourscore8084 thousand505 chosen977 men, which were warriors,6213 4421 to fight3898 against5973 the house1004 of Israel,3478 to bring7725 853 the kingdom4410 again to Rehoboam7346 the son1121 of Solomon.8010

22 But the word1697 of God430 came1961 unto413 Shemaiah8098 the man376 of God,430 saying,559

23 Speak559 unto413 Rehoboam,7346 the son1121 of Solomon,8010 king4428 of Judah,3063 and unto413 all3605 the house1004 of Judah3063 and Benjamin,1144 and to the remnant3499 of the people,5971 saying,559

24 Thus3541 saith559 the LORD,3068 Ye shall not3808 go up,5927 nor3808 fight3898 against5973 your brethren251 the children1121 of Israel:3478 return7725 every man376 to his house;1004 for3588 this2088 thing1697 is1961 from4480 854 me. They hearkened8085 therefore853 to the word1697 of the LORD,3068 and returned7725 to depart,1980 according to the word1697 of the LORD.3068

25 Then Jeroboam3379 built1129 853 Shechem7927 in mount2022 Ephraim,669 and dwelt3427 therein; and went out3318 from thence,4480 8033 and built1129 853 Penuel.6439

26 And Jeroboam3379 said559 in his heart,3820 Now6258 shall the kingdom4467 return7725 to the house1004 of David: 1732

27 If518 this2088 people5971 go up5927 to do6213 sacrifice2077 in the house1004 of the LORD3068 at Jerusalem,3389 then shall the heart3820 of this2088 people5971 turn again7725 unto413 their lord,113 even unto413 Rehoboam7346 king4428 of Judah,3063 and they shall kill2026 me, and go again7725 to413 Rehoboam7346 king4428 of Judah.3063

28 Whereupon the king4428 took counsel,3289 and made6213 two8147 calves5695 of gold,2091 and said559 unto413 them, It is too much7227 for you to go up4480 5927 to Jerusalem:3389 behold2009 thy gods,430 O Israel,3478 which834 brought5927 thee up out of the land4480 776 of Egypt.4714

29 And he set7760 853 the one259 in Bethel,1008 and the other259 put5414 he in Dan.1835

30 And this2088 thing1697 became1961 a sin:2403 for the people5971 went1980 to worship before6440 the one,259 even unto5704 Dan.1835

31 And he made6213 853 a house1004 of high places,1116 and made6213 priests3548 of the lowest4480 7098 of the people,5971 which834 were1961 not3808 of the sons4480 1121 of Levi.3878

32 And Jeroboam3379 ordained6213 a feast2282 in the eighth8066 month,2320 on the fifteenth2568 6240 day3117 of the month,2320 like unto the feast2282 that834 is in Judah,3063 and he offered5927 upon5921 the altar.4196 So3651 did6213 he in Bethel,1008 sacrificing2076 unto the calves5695 that834 he had made:6213 and he placed5975 in Bethel1008 853 the priests3548 of the high places1116 which834 he had made.6213

33 So he offered5927 upon5921 the altar4196 which834 he had made6213 in Bethel1008 the fifteenth2568 6240 day3117 of the eighth8066 month,2320 even in the month2320 which834 he had devised908 of his own heart;4480 3820 and ordained6213 a feast2282 unto the children1121 of Israel:3478 and he offered5927 upon5921 the altar,4196 and burnt incense.6999

Chapter 12

1 AND Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.Kings 131 AND, behold, there came a prophet out of Judah by the word of the LORD to Beth-el; and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense on the fifteenth day of the month, according to the feast which was in Judah. And he burned incense on the altar.

2 And when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it (for he had fled from the presence of King Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt)And the prophet cried against the altar by the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, hear the word of the LORD, thus says the LORD: Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon you he shall offer the priests of the temples of idols who burn incense upon you, and men's bones shall be burnt upon you.

3 Then they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the people of Israel came, and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD has sent me: Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.

4 Your father made our yoke harsh; now therefore lighten some of the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, and we will serve you.And when the king heard the saying of the prophet of God which he had cried against the altar in Beth-el, the king, standing at the altar, put forth his hand, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back again to him.

5 And he said to them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. So all the people departed.The altar also was broken, and the ashes which were upon it poured out, according to the sign which the prophet of God had given by the word of the LORD.

6 And King Rehoboam consulted with the old men who had stood before his father while he was still alive, and said to them, How do you advise that I may answer the people?And the king answered and said to the prophet of God, Pray for me before the LORD your God, and entreat for me that my hand may be restored to me. And the prophet of God prayed before the LORD, and the king's hand was restored to him, and it became as it was before.

7 And they said to him, If you will be a servant to this people this day and will serve them and answer them and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants for ever.And the king said to the prophet of God, Come home with me to eat and I will give you presents.

8 But he forsook the counsel which the old men had given him and consulted with the young men who were grown up with him and who stood before him;And the prophet of God said to him, If you give me half your house, I will not go home with you, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place.

9 And he said to them, What counsel do you give, that we may answer the people who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which your father did put upon us lighter?For so it was charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, and drink no water, nor return again by the way that you came.

10 And the young men who were grown up with him spoke to him, saying, Thus shall you speak to the people who have said to you, Your father made our yoke heavy, but make you it lighter for us; thus shall you say to them, My little finger is thicker than my father's thumb.So he went by another way, and did not return by the way that he came to Beth-el.

11 And now whereas my father laid a heavy yoke upon you, I will add to your yoke; my father has chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with knouts.Now there dwelt an old prophet in Beth-el; and his sons came and told him all the works that the prophet of God had done that day in Beth-el; and the words which he had spoken to the king, them they told also to their father.

12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had commanded them, saying, Come to me again the third day.And their father said to them, Which way did he go? And his sons showed him the way by which the prophet of God went, who came from Judah.

13 And the king answered the people harshly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him;And he said to his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass; and he rode on it,

14 And spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with knouts.And went after the prophet of God, and found him sitting under an oak; and he said to him, Are you the prophet of God who came from Judah? And he said, I am.

15 Wherefore the king did not listen to the people; for the stirring of strife was from the LORD, that the LORD might perform his saying which he spoke by his servant Ahijah the prophet, the Shilonite, unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.Then he said to him, Come home with me and eat bread.

16 So when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, We have no portion in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse; to your tents, O Israel; now see to your own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.And he answered. I cannot return with you nor go to your house; neither will I eat bread with you, nor drink water in this place;

17 And the children of Israel dwelt in their cities; but Judah made Rehoboam the son of Solomon king over them.For so it was said to me by the word of the LORD, You shall not eat bread nor drink water there, nor return again by the same way that you came.

18 Then King Rehoboam sent Adoniram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, and he died. Therefore King Rehoboam made haste to ride in his chariot to flee to Jerusalem.He said to him, I am a prophet also as are you; and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with you into your house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied to him.

19 So Israel has rebelled against the house of David to this day.So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house and drank water.

20 And when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the congregation and made him king over all Israel; there was none that followed the house of David but the tribe of Judah only.And as they sat at the table, the word of the LORD came to the prophet who brought him back;

21 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin a hundred and eighty thousand chosen men of war to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.And he cried to the prophet of God who came from Judah and said to him, Thus says the LORD. Because you have disobeyed the word of the LORD and have not kept the commandment which the LORD your God commanded you.

22 But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the prophet of God, saying,But have come back and have eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which the LORD said to you, You shall not eat bread, nor drink water; therefore your corpse shall not come into the sepulchre of your fathers.

23 Speak to Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,And after the two prophets had eaten bread and had drunk, they saddled the ass for the prophet of God.

24 Thus says the LORD: You shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel; return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned according to the word of the LORD.And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way and slew him; and his corpse was cast in the way, and the ass stood beside, and the lion also stood by the corpse.

25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.And, behold, men passed by and saw the corpse cast in the way and the ass standing beside it, and the lion also standing beside the corpse; and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.

26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now the kingdom will return to the house of David;And when the prophet who brought him back from the way heard of it, he said. It is the prophet of God who disobeyed the word of the LORD; therefore the LORD has delivered him to the lion, which has torn him and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spoke to him.

27 If this people go up to do sacrifices at the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.And he said to his sons, Saddle me the ass, and they saddled it.

28 So the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said to all Israel, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem; behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!And he went and found the corpse cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing beside the corpse; the lion had not eaten the corpse nor torn the ass.

29 And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other he put in Dan.And the prophet took up the corpse of the prophet of God, and laid it upon the ass and brought it back to the city where the old prophet dwelt, to mourn over him and to bury him.

30 And this thing became a sin; for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.And he laid his corpse in the grave; and he mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother! Alas, my brother!

31 And he made a temple of idols, and made priests from among the people who were not of the sons of Levi.And after he had buried him, he said to his sons, When I die, bury me in the sepulchre wherein the prophet of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones;

32 And Jeroboam made a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast that is in Judah, and he went up to the altar to offer sacrifices. So did he in Beth-el, sacrificing to the calves that he had made; and he appointed in Beth-el priests for the temples of idols which he had made.For the saying which he cried out by the word of the LORD against the altar in Beth-el and against all the temples of idols which are in the cities of Samaria shall surely come to pass.

33 And he went to the altar which he had made in Beth-el, on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and made a feast to the children of Israel; and he went up to the altar to burn incense.After this thing Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but made again from among the people priests for the temples of idols; whosoever would become a priest, he offered an offering and thus became the priest of the temple of idols.

5 And he said to them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. So all the people departed.The altar also was broken, and the ashes which were upon it poured out, according to the sign which the prophet of God had given by the word of the LORD.

7 And they said to him, If you will be a servant to this people this day and will serve them and answer them and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants for ever.And the king said to the prophet of God, Come home with me to eat and I will give you presents.

8 But he forsook5800 853 the counsel6098 of the old men,2205 which834 they had given3289 him, and consulted3289 with854 the young men3206 that834 were grown up1431 with854 him, and which834 stood5975 before6440 him:

10 And the young men3206 that834 were grown up1431 with854 him spoke1696 unto413 him, saying,559 Thus3541 shalt thou speak559 unto this2088 people5971 that834 spoke1696 unto413 thee, saying,559 Thy father1 made853 our yoke5923 heavy,3513 but make thou859 it lighter7043 unto4480 5921 us; thus3541 shalt thou say1696 unto413 them, My little6995 finger shall be thicker5666 than my father's1 loins.4480 4975

11 And now6258 whereas my father1 did lade6006 5921 you with a heavy3515 yoke,5923 I589 will add3254 to5921 your yoke:5923 my father1 hath chastised3256 you with whips,7752 but I589 will chastise3256 you with scorpions.6137

12 So Jeroboam3379 and all3605 the people5971 came935 to413 Rehoboam7346 the third7992 day,3117 as834 the king4428 had appointed,1696 saying,559 Come7725 to413 me again the third7992 day.3117

12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had commanded them, saying, Come to me again the third day.And their father said to them, Which way did he go? And his sons showed him the way by which the prophet of God went, who came from Judah.

13 And the king4428 answered6030 853 the people5971 roughly,7186 and forsook5800 853 the old men's2205 counsel6098 that834 they gave3289 him;

13 And the king answered the people harshly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him;And he said to his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass; and he rode on it,

16 So when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, We have no portion in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse; to your tents, O Israel; now see to your own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.And he answered. I cannot return with you nor go to your house; neither will I eat bread with you, nor drink water in this place;

17 But as for the children1121 of Israel3478 which dwelt3427 in the cities5892 of Judah,3063 Rehoboam7346 reigned4427 over5921 them.

17 And the children of Israel dwelt in their cities; but Judah made Rehoboam the son of Solomon king over them.For so it was said to me by the word of the LORD, You shall not eat bread nor drink water there, nor return again by the same way that you came.

19 So Israel3478 rebelled6586 against the house1004 of David1732 unto5704 this2088 day.3117

19 So Israel has rebelled against the house of David to this day.So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house and drank water.

20 And when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the congregation and made him king over all Israel; there was none that followed the house of David but the tribe of Judah only.And as they sat at the table, the word of the LORD came to the prophet who brought him back;

22 But the word1697 of God430 came1961 unto413 Shemaiah8098 the man376 of God,430 saying,559

22 But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the prophet of God, saying,But have come back and have eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which the LORD said to you, You shall not eat bread, nor drink water; therefore your corpse shall not come into the sepulchre of your fathers.

23 Speak559 unto413 Rehoboam,7346 the son1121 of Solomon,8010 king4428 of Judah,3063 and unto413 all3605 the house1004 of Judah3063 and Benjamin,1144 and to the remnant3499 of the people,5971 saying,559

23 Speak to Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,And after the two prophets had eaten bread and had drunk, they saddled the ass for the prophet of God.

25 Then Jeroboam3379 built1129 853 Shechem7927 in mount2022 Ephraim,669 and dwelt3427 therein; and went out3318 from thence,4480 8033 and built1129 853 Penuel.6439

26 And Jeroboam3379 said559 in his heart,3820 Now6258 shall the kingdom4467 return7725 to the house1004 of David: 1732

29 And he set7760 853 the one259 in Bethel,1008 and the other259 put5414 he in Dan.1835

29 And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other he put in Dan.And the prophet took up the corpse of the prophet of God, and laid it upon the ass and brought it back to the city where the old prophet dwelt, to mourn over him and to bury him.

30 And this2088 thing1697 became1961 a sin:2403 for the people5971 went1980 to worship before6440 the one,259 even unto5704 Dan.1835

30 And this thing became a sin; for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.And he laid his corpse in the grave; and he mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother! Alas, my brother!

31 And he made6213 853 a house1004 of high places,1116 and made6213 priests3548 of the lowest4480 7098 of the people,5971 which834 were1961 not3808 of the sons4480 1121 of Levi.3878

31 And he made a temple of idols, and made priests from among the people who were not of the sons of Levi.And after he had buried him, he said to his sons, When I die, bury me in the sepulchre wherein the prophet of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones;
