Chapter 1

1 PAUL, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Ti-mo'the-us our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints who are in all A-cha'ia:

2 Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from our LORD Jesus Christ.

3 Blessed be God, even the Father of our LORD Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort;

4 Who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we also may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, by the very comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds in Christ.

6 Even though we are oppressed, it is for the sake of your consolation and for the sake of your salvation that we are oppressed; and if we are comforted, it is so that you might be comforted also; to be strength in you that you may be able to bear these sufferings, the same which we also suffer.

7 And our hope concerning you is steadfast, for we know that if you are partakers of the sufferings, you are also partakers of the consolation.

8 For we would wish you to know, my brethren, about the trouble we had in Asia Minor, for we were greatly oppressed beyond our strength; insomuch that we despaired of our lives:

9 And we decided to die, not trusting in ourselves but in God who raises the dead:

10 Who delivered us from horrible deaths, and who will, we hope, again deliver us;

11 You also helping by your supplications for us, that for his gift bestowed upon us, by means of many persons, thanks may be given by many on our behalf.

12 For our joy is this, the testimony of our conscience, in sincerity and in purity with the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in this world, and not through the wisdom of the flesh; and above all, we have so dealt with you.

13 For we write nothing to you except those things which you know and understand, and I trust you will understand them to the end;

14 Just as you have understood in part that we are your pride and joy, even as you also are ours in the day of our LORD Jesus Christ.

15 And in this confidence I wished to come to you before, that you might receive grace doubly;

16 And to pass by you on my way to Mac-edo'ni- a, and again to come back to you from Mac-e-do'ni-a, so that you may wish me Godspeed on my way to Judµa.

17 When I, therefore, was considering this, did I consider it lightly or are the things which I am considering wholly worldly? Because they should have been either yes, yes, or no, no.

18 But as God is true, our word to you was not yes and no.

19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Ti-mo'the-us, was not yes and no, but with him always yes.

20 For all the promises of God were in Christ, yes; therefore by his hand, we are given Amen to the glory of God.

21 Now it is God who has confirmed us with you in Christ, and who has anointed us;

22 And who has sealed us, and pledged his spirit in our hearts.

23 Moreover I testify to God concerning myself, that it was because I wanted to spare you, that I did not come to Corinth.

24 Not that we are the masters of your faith, but we are helpers of your joy; for by faith you stand.

2 Grace5485 be to you and peace1515 from God2316 our Father,3962 and from the Lord2962 Jesus2424 Christ.5547

3 Blessed2128 be God,2316 even2532 the Father3962 of our Lord2962 Jesus2424 Christ,5547 the Father3962 of mercies,3628 and the God2316 of all3650 comfort;3874

4 Who3588 comforts3870 us in all3650 our tribulation,2347 that we may be able1410 to comfort3870 them which are in any3956 trouble,2347 by the comfort3874 with which3739 we ourselves are comforted3870 of God.2316

5 For as the sufferings3804 of Christ5547 abound4052 in us, so3779 our consolation3874 also2532 abounds4052 by Christ.5547

6 And whether1535 we be afflicted,2346 it is for your5216 consolation3874 and salvation,4991 which3588 is effectual1754 in the enduring5281 of the same846 sufferings3804 which3588 we also2532 suffer:3958 or1535 whether1535 we be comforted,3870 it is for your5216 consolation3874 and salvation.4991

7 And our hope1680 of you is steadfast,949 knowing,1492 that as you are partakers2844 of the sufferings,3804 so3779 shall you be also2532 of the consolation.3874

8 For we would2309 not, brothers,80 have you ignorant50 of our trouble2347 which3588 came1096 to us in Asia,773 that we were pressed916 out of measure,5236 above5228 strength,1411 so5620 that we despaired1820 even2532 of life:2198

9 But we had2192 the sentence610 of death2288 in ourselves,1438 that we should not trust3982 in ourselves,1438 but in God2316 which3588 raises1453 the dead:3498

10 Who delivered4506 us from so5082 great5082 a death,2288 and does deliver:4506 in whom3739 we trust1679 that he will yet2089 deliver4506 us;

11 You also2532 helping4943 together4943 by prayer1162 for us, that for the gift5486 bestowed on us by the means of many4183 persons4383 thanks2168 may be given by many4183 on5228 our behalf.5228

12 For our rejoicing2746 is this,3778 the testimony3142 of our conscience,4893 that in simplicity572 and godly2316 sincerity,1505 not with fleshly4559 wisdom,4678 but by the grace5485 of God,2316 we have had our conversation390 in the world,2889 and more4056 abundantly4056 to you-ward4314 5209.

13 For we write1125 none3756 other243 things to you, than2228 what3739 you read314 or2228 acknowledge;1921 and I trust1679 you shall acknowledge1921 even2532 to the end;5056

14 As also2532 you have acknowledged1922 us in part,3313 that we are your5216 rejoicing,2745 even2509 as you also2532 are our's2257 in the day2250 of the Lord2962 Jesus.2424

15 And in this5026 confidence4006 I was minded1014 to come2064 to you before,4386 that you might have2192 a second1208 benefit;5485

16 And to pass1330 by you into1519 Macedonia,3109 and to come2064 again3825 out of Macedonia3109 to you, and of you to be brought4311 on my way4311 toward1519 Judaea.2449

17 When I therefore3767 was thus5124 minded,1011 did I use5530 lightness?1644 or2228 the things that I purpose,1011 do I purpose1011 according2596 to the flesh,4561 that with me there should be yes3483 yes,3483 and no3756 no?3756

18 But as God2316 is true,4103 our word3056 toward4314 you was not yes3483 and no.3756

19 For the Son5207 of God,2316 Jesus2424 Christ,5547 who3588 was preached2784 among1722 you by us, even by me and Silvanus4610 and Timotheus,5095 was not yes3483 and no,3756 but in him was yes.3483

20 For all3745 the promises1860 of God2316 in him are yes,3483 and in him Amen,281 to the glory1391 of God2316 by us.

21 Now1161 he which establishes950 us with you in Christ,5547 and has anointed5548 us, is God;2316

22 Who3588 has also2532 sealed4972 us, and given1325 the earnest728 of the Spirit4151 in our hearts.2588

23 Moreover1161 I call1941 God2316 for a record3144 on my soul,5590 that to spare5339 you I came2064 not as yet3765 to Corinth.2882

24 Not for that we have dominion2961 over your5216 faith,4102 but are helpers4904 of your5216 joy:5479 for by faith4102 you stand.2476
