Chapter 37

1 And Jacob3290 dwelt3427 in the land776 wherein his father1 was a stranger,4033 in the land776 of Canaan.3667

2 These428 are the generations8435 of Jacob.3290 Joseph,3130 being seventeen7651 6240 years8141 old,1121 was1961 feeding7462 the flock6629 with854 his brethren;251 and the lad5288 was with854 the sons1121 of Bilhah,1090 and with854 the sons1121 of Zilpah,2153 his father's1 wives:802 and Joseph3130 brought935 unto413 his father1 their853 evil7451 report.1681

3 Now Israel3478 loved157 853 Joseph3130 more than all4480 3605 his children,1121 because3588 he1931 was the son1121 of his old age:2208 and he made6213 him a coat3801 of many colors.6446

4 And when his brethren251 saw7200 that3588 their father1 loved157 him more than all4480 3605 his brethren,251 they hated8130 him, and could3201 not3808 speak1696 peaceably7965 unto him.

5 And Joseph3130 dreamed2492 a dream,2472 and he told5046 it his brethren:251 and they hated8130 him yet5750 the more.3254

6 And he said559 unto413 them, Hear,8085 I pray you,4994 this2088 dream2472 which834 I have dreamed: 2492

7 For, behold,2009 we587 were binding481 sheaves485 in8432 the field,7704 and, lo,2009 my sheaf485 arose,6965 and also1571 stood upright;5324 and, behold,2009 your sheaves485 stood round about,5437 and made obeisance7812 to my sheaf.485

8 And his brethren251 said559 to him, Shalt thou indeed reign4427 4427 over5921 us? or518 shalt thou indeed have dominion4910 4910 over us? And they hated8130 him yet5750 the more3254 for5921 his dreams,2472 and for5921 his words.1697

9 And he dreamed2492 yet5750 another312 dream,2472 and told5608 it his brethren,251 and said,559 Behold,2009 I have dreamed2492 a dream2472 more;5750 and, behold,2009 the sun8121 and the moon3394 and the eleven259 6240 stars3556 made obeisance7812 to me.

10 And he told5608 it to413 his father,1 and to413 his brethren:251 and his father1 rebuked1605 him, and said559 unto him, What4100 is this2088 dream2472 that834 thou hast dreamed?2492 Shall I589 and thy mother517 and thy brethren251 indeed come935 935 to bow down ourselves7812 to thee to the earth?776

11 And his brethren251 envied7065 him; but his father1 observed8104 853 the saying.1697

12 And his brethren251 went1980 to feed7462 853 their father's1 flock6629 in Shechem.7927

13 And Israel3478 said559 unto413 Joseph,3130 Do not3808 thy brethren251 feed7462 the flock in Shechem?7927 come,1980 and I will send7971 thee unto413 them. And he said559 to him, Here2009 am I.

14 And he said559 to him, Go,1980 I pray thee,4994 see7200 whether853 it be well7965 with thy brethren,251 and well7965 with the flocks;6629 and bring7725 me word1697 again. So he sent7971 him out of the vale4480 6010 of Hebron,2275 and he came935 to Shechem.7927

15 And a certain man376 found4672 him, and, behold,2009 he was wandering8582 in the field:7704 and the man376 asked7592 him, saying,559 What4100 seekest1245 thou?

16 And he said,559 I595 seek1245 853 my brethren:251 tell5046 me, I pray thee,4994 where375 they1992 feed7462 their flocks.

17 And the man376 said,559 They are departed5265 hence;4480 2088 for3588 I heard8085 them say,559 Let us go1980 to Dothan.1886 And Joseph3130 went1980 after310 his brethren,251 and found4672 them in Dothan.1886

18 And when they saw7200 him afar off,4480 7350 even before2962 he came near7126 unto413 them, they conspired5230 against him to slay4191 him.

19 And they said559 one376 to413 another,251 Behold,2009 this1976 dreamer1167 2472 cometh.935

20 Come1980 now6258 therefore, and let us slay2026 him, and cast7993 him into some259 pit,953 and we will say,559 Some evil7451 beast2416 hath devoured398 him: and we shall see7200 what4100 will become1961 of his dreams.2472

21 And Reuben7205 heard8085 it, and he delivered5337 him out of their hands;4480 3027 and said,559 Let us not3808 kill5221 him.

22 And Reuben7205 said559 unto413 them, Shed8210 no408 blood,1818 but cast7993 him into413 this2088 pit953 that834 is in the wilderness,4057 and lay7971 no408 hand3027 upon him; that4616 he might rid5337 him out of their hands,4480 3027 to deliver7725 him to413 his father1 again.

23 And it came to pass,1961 when834 Joseph3130 was come935 unto413 his brethren,251 that they stripped6584 853 Joseph3130 out of853 his coat,3801 his853 coat3801 of many colors6446 that834 was on5921 him;

24 And they took3947 him, and cast7993 him into a pit:953 and the pit953 was empty,7386 there was no369 water4325 in it.

25 And they sat down3427 to eat398 bread:3899 and they lifted up5375 their eyes5869 and looked,7200 and, behold,2009 a company736 of Ishmaelites3459 came935 from Gilead4480 1568 with their camels1581 bearing5375 spicery5219 and balm6875 and myrrh,3910 going1980 to carry it down3381 to Egypt.4714

26 And Judah3063 said559 unto413 his brethren,251 What4100 profit1215 is it if3588 we slay2026 853 our brother,251 and conceal3680 853 his blood?1818

27 Come,1980 and let us sell4376 him to the Ishmaelites,3459 and let not408 our hand3027 be1961 upon him; for3588 he1931 is our brother251 and our flesh.1320 And his brethren251 were content.8085

28 Then there passed by5674 Midianites376 4084 merchantmen;5503 and they drew4900 and lifted up5927 853 Joseph3130 out of4480 the pit,953 and sold4376 853 Joseph3130 to the Ishmaelites3459 for twenty6242 pieces of silver:3701 and they brought935 853 Joseph3130 into Egypt.4714

29 And Reuben7205 returned7725 unto413 the pit;953 and, behold,2009 Joseph3130 was not369 in the pit;953 and he rent7167 853 his clothes.899

30 And he returned7725 unto413 his brethren,251 and said,559 The child3206 is not;369 and I,589 whither575 shall I589 go?935

31 And they took3947 853 Joseph's3130 coat,3801 and killed7819 a kid8163 of the goats,5795 and dipped2881 853 the coat3801 in the blood;1818

32 And they sent7971 853 the coat3801 of many colors,6446 and they brought935 it to413 their father;1 and said,559 This2063 have we found:4672 know5234 now4994 whether it1931 be thy son's1121 coat3801 or518 no.3808

33 And he knew5234 it, and said,559 It is my son's1121 coat;3801 an evil7451 beast2416 hath devoured398 him; Joseph3130 is without doubt rent in pieces.2963 2963

34 And Jacob3290 rent7167 his clothes,8071 and put7760 sackcloth8242 upon his loins,4975 and mourned56 for5921 his son1121 many7227 days.3117

35 And all3605 his sons1121 and all3605 his daughters1323 rose up6965 to comfort5162 him; but he refused3985 to be comforted;5162 and he said,559 For3588 I will go down3381 into the grave7585 unto413 my son1121 mourning.57 Thus his father1 wept1058 for him.

36 And the Midianites4092 sold4376 him into413 Egypt4714 unto Potiphar,6318 an officer5631 of Pharaoh's,6547 and captain8269 of the guard.2876

Chapter 37

1 AND Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a sojourner, in the land of Canaan.

2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers; and the lad was reared with the sons of Zilpah, and with the sons of Bilhah, his father's wives; and Joseph brought an evil report of them to their father.

3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his other sons, because he was the son of his old age; and he had made him a rich robe with long sleeves.

4 And when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him.

5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him yet the more.

6 And he said to them, Listen to this dream which I have dreamed:

7 Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose and stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about and bowed down to my sheaf.

8 And his brothers said to him, Are you indeed going to reign over us? Or are you going to have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

9 And he dreamed another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, Behold, I have dreamed another dream; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars bowed down to me.

10 And when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him, and said to him, What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down ourselves to the ground to you?

11 And his brothers envied him; but his father observed the sayings.

12 And Joseph's brothers went to feed their father's, flock in Shechem.

13 And Israel said to Joseph, Behold, your brothers are feeding the flocks in Shechem; come, I will send you to them. And he said to him, Here am I.

14 Then his father said to him, Go, see whether it is well with your brothers and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So Jacob sent him from the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

15 And a certain man found him while he was wandering in the field; and the man asked him, and said to him, What are you seeking?

16 And he said, I am seeking my brothers; do tell me where they are feeding their flocks.

17 And the man said, They have departed from here; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. So Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.

18 And they saw him from afar, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him.

19 And they said to one another, Behold, here comes the dreamer.

20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and throw him into one of the pits; and then we will say that a wild beast has devoured him, and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and he said to them, Let us not kill him.

22 And Reuben said to them, Shed no blood; throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but do not harm him; that he might deliver him from their hands, and bring him back to his father.

23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come to his brothers, they stripped him of the rich robe that he was wearing;

24 And they took him, and threw him into a pit; and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.

25 And they sat down to eat bread; and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a caravan of Arabians coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to carry it down to Egypt.

26 And Judah said to his brothers, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?

27 Come, let us sell him to the Arabians, and let us not harm him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brothers listened to him.

28 Then some Midianite merchants passed by; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Arabians for twenty pieces of silver; and they brought him into Egypt.

29 And then Reuben returned to the pit, and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he tore his clothes.

30 And he returned to his brothers, and said to them, Where is the boy; and as for me, where shall I go?

31 And they took Joseph's robe, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the robe in the blood;

32 And they sent the robe with long sleeves, and they brought it to their father; and said, This we have found: know now whether it be your son's coat or not.

33 And he recognized it, and said, It is my son's coat; a wild beast has devoured him; my son Joseph is surely torn to pieces.

34 Then Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

35 And all his sons and all his daughters made an effort to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, I will go down to Sheol, to my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.

36 And the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officers, the commander of the guard.

10 And when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him, and said to him, What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down ourselves to the ground to you?

11 And his brethren251 envied7065 him; but his father1 observed8104 853 the saying.1697

12 And Joseph's brothers went to feed their father's, flock in Shechem.

13 And Israel3478 said559 unto413 Joseph,3130 Do not3808 thy brethren251 feed7462 the flock in Shechem?7927 come,1980 and I will send7971 thee unto413 them. And he said559 to him, Here2009 am I.

13 And Israel said to Joseph, Behold, your brothers are feeding the flocks in Shechem; come, I will send you to them. And he said to him, Here am I.

16 And he said,559 I595 seek1245 853 my brethren:251 tell5046 me, I pray thee,4994 where375 they1992 feed7462 their flocks.

19 And they said559 one376 to413 another,251 Behold,2009 this1976 dreamer1167 2472 cometh.935

19 And they said to one another, Behold, here comes the dreamer.

20 Come1980 now6258 therefore, and let us slay2026 him, and cast7993 him into some259 pit,953 and we will say,559 Some evil7451 beast2416 hath devoured398 him: and we shall see7200 what4100 will become1961 of his dreams.2472

20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and throw him into one of the pits; and then we will say that a wild beast has devoured him, and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

21 And Reuben7205 heard8085 it, and he delivered5337 him out of their hands;4480 3027 and said,559 Let us not3808 kill5221 him.

23 And it came to pass,1961 when834 Joseph3130 was come935 unto413 his brethren,251 that they stripped6584 853 Joseph3130 out of853 his coat,3801 his853 coat3801 of many colors6446 that834 was on5921 him;

24 And they took him, and threw him into a pit; and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.

25 And they sat down to eat bread; and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a caravan of Arabians coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to carry it down to Egypt.

29 And then Reuben returned to the pit, and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he tore his clothes.

30 And he returned7725 unto413 his brethren,251 and said,559 The child3206 is not;369 and I,589 whither575 shall I589 go?935
