Chapter 3

1 They say,559 If2005 a man376 put away7971 853 his wife,802 and she go1980 from4480 854 him, and become1961 another312 man's,376 shall he return7725 unto413 her again?5750 shall not3808 that1931 land776 be greatly polluted?2610 2610 but thou859 hast played the harlot2181 with many7227 lovers;7453 yet return7725 again to413 me, saith5002 the LORD.3068

2 Lift up5375 thine eyes5869 unto5921 the high places,8205 and see7200 where375 thou hast not3808 been lain7901 with. In5921 the ways1870 hast thou sat3427 for them, as the Arabian6163 in the wilderness;4057 and thou hast polluted2610 the land776 with thy whoredoms2184 and with thy wickedness.7451

3 Therefore the showers7241 have been withheld,4513 and there hath been1961 no3808 latter rain;4456 and thou hadst a whore's802 2181 forehead,4696 thou refusedst3985 to be ashamed.3637

4 Wilt thou not3808 from this time4480 6258 cry7121 unto me, My father,1 thou859 art the guide441 of my youth?5271

5 Will he reserve5201 his anger forever?5769 will he keep8104 it to the end?5331 Behold,2009 thou hast spoken1696 and done6213 evil things7451 as thou couldest.3201

6 The LORD3068 said559 also unto413 me in the days3117 of Josiah2977 the king,4428 Hast thou seen7200 that which834 backsliding4878 Israel3478 hath done?6213 she1931 is gone up1980 upon5921 every3605 high1364 mountain2022 and under8478 every3605 green7488 tree,6086 and there8033 hath played the harlot.2181

7 And I said559 after310 she had done6213 853 all3605 these428 things, Turn7725 thou unto413 me. But she returned7725 not.3808 And her treacherous901 sister269 Judah3063 saw7200 it.

8 And I saw,7200 when3588 for5921 all3605 the causes182 whereby834 backsliding4878 Israel3478 committed adultery5003 I had put her away,7971 and given5414 413 her853 a bill5612 of divorce;3748 yet her treacherous898 sister269 Judah3063 feared3372 not,3808 but went1980 and played the harlot2181 also.1571

9 And it came to pass1961 through the lightness4480 6963 of her whoredom,2184 that she defiled2610 853 the land,776 and committed adultery5003 with854 stones68 and with854 stocks.6086

10 And yet1571 for all3605 this2063 her treacherous901 sister269 Judah3063 hath not3808 turned7725 unto413 me with her whole3605 heart,3820 but3588 518 feignedly,8267 saith5002 the LORD.3068

11 And the LORD3068 said559 unto413 me, The backsliding4878 Israel3478 hath justified6663 herself5315 more than treacherous4480 898 Judah.3063

12 Go1980 and proclaim7121 853 these428 words1697 toward the north,6828 and say,559 Return,7725 thou backsliding4878 Israel,3478 saith5002 the LORD;3068 and I will not3808 cause mine anger6440 to fall5307 upon you: for3588 I589 am merciful,2623 saith5002 the LORD,3068 and I will not3808 keep5201 anger forever.5769

13 Only389 acknowledge3045 thine iniquity,5771 that3588 thou hast transgressed6586 against the LORD3068 thy God,430 and hast scattered6340 853 thy ways1870 to the strangers2114 under8478 every3605 green7488 tree,6086 and ye have not3808 obeyed8085 my voice,6963 saith5002 the LORD.3068

14 Turn,7725 O backsliding7726 children,1121 saith5002 the LORD;3068 for3588 I595 am married1166 unto you: and I will take3947 you one259 of a city,4480 5892 and two8147 of a family,4480 4940 and I will bring935 you to Zion: 6726

15 And I will give5414 you pastors7462 according to mine heart,3820 which shall feed7462 you with knowledge1844 and understanding.7919

16 And it shall come to pass,1961 when3588 ye be multiplied7235 and increased6509 in the land,776 in those1992 days,3117 saith5002 the LORD,3068 they shall say559 no3808 more,5750 The ark727 of the covenant1285 of the LORD:3068 neither3808 shall it come5927 to5921 mind:3820 neither3808 shall they remember2142 it; neither3808 shall they visit6485 it; neither3808 shall that be done6213 any more.5750

17 At that1931 time6256 they shall call7121 Jerusalem3389 the throne3678 of the LORD;3068 and all3605 the nations1471 shall be gathered6960 unto413 it, to the name8034 of the LORD,3068 to Jerusalem:3389 neither3808 shall they walk1980 any more5750 after310 the imagination8307 of their evil7451 heart.3820

18 In those1992 days3117 the house1004 of Judah3063 shall walk1980 with5921 the house1004 of Israel,3478 and they shall come935 together3162 out of the land4480 776 of the north6828 to5921 the land776 that834 I have given for an inheritance5157 unto853 your fathers.1

19 But I595 said,559 How349 shall I put7896 thee among the children,1121 and give5414 thee a pleasant2532 land,776 a goodly6643 heritage5159 of the hosts6635 of nations?1471 and I said,559 Thou shalt call7121 me, My father;1 and shalt not3808 turn away7725 from4480 310 me.

20 Surely403 as a wife802 treacherously departeth898 from her husband,4480 1167 so3651 have ye dealt treacherously898 with me, O house1004 of Israel,3478 saith5002 the LORD.3068

21 A voice6963 was heard8085 upon5921 the high places,8205 weeping1065 and supplications8469 of the children1121 of Israel:3478 for3588 they have perverted5753 853 their way,1870 and they have forgotten7911 853 the LORD3068 their God.430

22 Return,7725 ye backsliding7726 children,1121 and I will heal7495 your backslidings.4878 Behold,2009 we come857 unto thee; for3588 thou859 art the LORD3068 our God.430

23 Truly403 in vain8267 is salvation hoped for from the hills,4480 1389 and from the multitude1995 of mountains:2022 truly403 in the LORD3068 our God430 is the salvation8668 of Israel.3478

24 For shame1322 hath devoured398 853 the labor3018 of our fathers1 from our youth;4480 5271 853 their flocks6629 and their herds,1241 853 their sons1121 and their daughters.1323

25 We lie down7901 in our shame,1322 and our confusion3639 covereth3680 us: for3588 we have sinned2398 against the LORD3068 our God,430 we587 and our fathers,1 from our youth4480 5271 even unto5704 this2088 day,3117 and have not3808 obeyed8085 the voice6963 of the LORD3068 our God.430

Chapter 3

1 IF a man put away his wife, and she go from him and become another man's wife, and he return to her again, behold, the land shall be defiled. But you have committed adultery with many rulers; return again to me, says the LORD.

2 Lift up your eyes to the highways, and see if there is a place where you have not defiled yourself. In the roads you have sat waiting for them, like an ostrich in the wilderness; and you have polluted the land with your whoredom.

3 And because of your wickedness the showers have been withheld, and there has been no latter rain; and you have become shameless like a whore, you have refused to be reproved.

4 Behold, now you say to me, My father, and thou art foster mother of my childhood.

5 Will God reserve his anger for ever? Or will he keep it to the end? Behold, you have spoken, and have done evil things beyond measure.

6 The LORD said to me in the days of King Josiah, Have you seen the thing which she who dwells in Israel has done? She has gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there has played the harlot.

7 And I said after she had done all these things, Return to me, but she did not return. And her perverseness was seen by her sister Judah.

8 And she saw all Israel's evil-doings. And because the inhabitants of Israel committed adultery, I had put her away and given a bill of divorce; yet her perverse sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the harlot also.

9 And her whoredom was so excessive that she defiled the land and committed adultery with idols of stone and wood,

10 And yet, for all this her treacherous sister Judah has not returned to me with her whole heart, but only with falsehood, says the LORD.

11 And the LORD said to me, The inhabitant of Israel has justified herself more than her perverse sister Judah.

12 Go proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Repent, O you inhabitant of Israel, says the LORD; and I will not be severe against you; for I am good, says the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever.

13 Only acknowledge your iniquity, for you have sinned against the LORD your God, and have scattered your evil practices to the strangers under every green tree, and you have not obeyed my voice, says the LORD.

14 Repent, O backsliding children, says the LORD; for I was pleased with you; and took one person of you from every town and two from every family, and I brought you to Zion.

15 And I will give you rulers according to my own heart, who will govern you with knowledge and understanding.

16 And it shall come to pass when you have multiplied and increased in the land in those days, says the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD; neither shall it come to mind, nor shall they remember it, nor shall they visit it, nor shall that ritual be performed any more.

17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall look up to the name of the LORD; neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.

18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given as an inheritance to their fathers.

19 And I said, I will consider you as children, and give you a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations; and I said, You shall call me, My father, and shall not turn away from me.

20 Surely as a wife lies about her lover, so has the house of Israel lied against me, says the LORD.

21 A voice was heard on the highways, the weeping and supplications of the children of Israel; for they have perverted their ways, and they have forsaken the LORD their God.

22 Repent, O you backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings; and say, Behold, we are yours; for thou art the LORD our God.

23 Truly, in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills and from fortified mountains; truly, in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.

24 For shame has devoured the labor of our fathers from their childhood, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.

25 Let us lie down in our shame, and let our confusion cover us; for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.

18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given as an inheritance to their fathers.

19 And I said, I will consider you as children, and give you a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations; and I said, You shall call me, My father, and shall not turn away from me.

20 Surely403 as a wife802 treacherously departeth898 from her husband,4480 1167 so3651 have ye dealt treacherously898 with me, O house1004 of Israel,3478 saith5002 the LORD.3068

20 Surely as a wife lies about her lover, so has the house of Israel lied against me, says the LORD.

21 A voice6963 was heard8085 upon5921 the high places,8205 weeping1065 and supplications8469 of the children1121 of Israel:3478 for3588 they have perverted5753 853 their way,1870 and they have forgotten7911 853 the LORD3068 their God.430

21 A voice was heard on the highways, the weeping and supplications of the children of Israel; for they have perverted their ways, and they have forsaken the LORD their God.

22 Return,7725 ye backsliding7726 children,1121 and I will heal7495 your backslidings.4878 Behold,2009 we come857 unto thee; for3588 thou859 art the LORD3068 our God.430

22 Repent, O you backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings; and say, Behold, we are yours; for thou art the LORD our God.

23 Truly403 in vain8267 is salvation hoped for from the hills,4480 1389 and from the multitude1995 of mountains:2022 truly403 in the LORD3068 our God430 is the salvation8668 of Israel.3478

23 Truly, in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills and from fortified mountains; truly, in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.

24 For shame1322 hath devoured398 853 the labor3018 of our fathers1 from our youth;4480 5271 853 their flocks6629 and their herds,1241 853 their sons1121 and their daughters.1323

24 For shame has devoured the labor of our fathers from their childhood, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.

25 Let us lie down in our shame, and let our confusion cover us; for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.
