Jeremiah

Chapter 5

1 Run ye to and fro7751 through the streets2351 of Jerusalem,3389 and see7200 now,4994 and know,3045 and seek1245 in the broad places7339 thereof, if518 ye can find4672 a man,376 if518 there be3426 any that executeth6213 judgment,4941 that seeketh1245 the truth;530 and I will pardon5545 it.

2 And though518 they say,559 The LORD3068 liveth;2416 surely3651 they swear7650 falsely.8267

3 O LORD,3068 are not3808 thine eyes5869 upon the truth?530 thou hast stricken5221 them, but they have not3808 grieved;2342 thou hast consumed3615 them, but they have refused3985 to receive3947 correction:4148 they have made their faces6440 harder2388 than a rock;4480 5553 they have refused3985 to return.7725

4 Therefore I589 said,559 Surely389 these1992 are poor;1800 they are foolish:2973 for3588 they know3045 not3808 the way1870 of the LORD,3068 nor the judgment4941 of their God.430

5 I will get1980 me unto413 the great men,1419 and will speak unto1696 them; for3588 they1992 have known3045 the way1870 of the LORD,3068 and the judgment4941 of their God:430 but389 these1992 have altogether3162 broken7665 the yoke,5923 and burst5423 the bonds.4147

6 Wherefore5921 3651 a lion738 out of the forest4480 3293 shall slay5221 them, and a wolf2061 of the evenings6160 shall spoil7703 them, a leopard5246 shall watch8245 over5921 their cities:5892 every one3605 that goeth out3318 thence4480 2007 shall be torn in pieces:2963 because3588 their transgressions6588 are many,7231 and their backslidings4878 are increased.6105

7 How335 shall I pardon5545 thee for this?2063 thy children1121 have forsaken5800 me, and sworn7650 by them that are no3808 gods:430 when I had fed them to the full,7646 853 they then committed adultery,5003 and assembled themselves1413 by troops in the harlots2181 houses.1004

8 They were1961 as fed2109 horses5483 in the morning:7904 every one376 neighed6670 after413 his neighbor's7453 wife.802

9 Shall I not3808 visit6485 for5921 these428 things? saith5002 the LORD:3068 and518 shall not3808 my soul5315 be avenged5358 on such834 a nation1471 as this?2088

10 Go ye up5927 upon her walls,8284 and destroy;7843 but make6213 not408 a full end:3617 take away5493 her battlements;5189 for3588 they1992 are not3808 the LORD's.3068

11 For3588 the house1004 of Israel3478 and the house1004 of Judah3063 have dealt very treacherously898 898 against me, saith5002 the LORD.3068

12 They have belied3584 the LORD,3068 and said,559 It is not3808 he;1931 neither3808 shall evil7451 come935 upon5921 us; neither3808 shall we see7200 sword2719 nor famine: 7458

13 And the prophets5030 shall become1961 wind,7307 and the word1699 is not369 in them: thus3541 shall it be done6213 unto them.

14 Wherefore3651 thus3541 saith559 the LORD3068 God430 of hosts,6635 Because3282 ye speak1696 853 this2088 word,1697 behold,2009 I will make5414 my words1697 in thy mouth6310 fire,784 and this2088 people5971 wood,6086 and it shall devour398 them.

15 Lo,2009 I will bring935 a nation1471 upon5921 you from far,4480 4801 O house1004 of Israel,3478 saith5002 the LORD:3068 it1931 is a mighty386 nation,1471 it1931 is an ancient4480 5769 nation,1471 a nation1471 whose language3956 thou knowest3045 not,3808 neither3808 understandest8085 what4100 they say.1696

16 Their quiver827 is as an open6605 sepulcher,6913 they are all3605 mighty men.1368

17 And they shall eat up398 thine harvest,7105 and thy bread,3899 which thy sons1121 and thy daughters1323 should eat:398 they shall eat up398 thy flocks6629 and thine herds:1241 they shall eat up398 thy vines1612 and thy fig trees:8384 they shall impoverish7567 thy fenced4013 cities,5892 wherein834 thou859 trustedst,982 with the sword.2719

18 Nevertheless1571 in those1992 days,3117 saith5002 the LORD,3068 I will not3808 make6213 a full end3617 with854 you.

19 And it shall come to pass,1961 when3588 ye shall say,559 Wherefore8478 4100 doeth6213 the LORD3068 our God430 853 all3605 these428 things unto us? then shalt thou answer559 413 them, Like834 as ye have forsaken5800 me, and served5647 strange5236 gods430 in your land,776 so3651 shall ye serve5647 strangers2114 in a land776 that is not3808 yours.

20 Declare5046 this2063 in the house1004 of Jacob,3290 and publish8085 it in Judah,3063 saying,559

21 Hear8085 now4994 this,2063 O foolish5530 people,5971 and without369 understanding;3820 which have eyes,5869 and see7200 not;3808 which have ears,241 and hear8085 not: 3808

22 Fear3372 ye not3808 me? saith5002 the LORD:3068 will ye not3808 tremble2342 at my presence,4480 6440 which834 have placed7760 the sand2344 for the bound1366 of the sea3220 by a perpetual5769 decree,2706 that it cannot3808 pass5674 it: and though the waves1530 thereof toss themselves,1607 yet can they not3808 prevail;3201 though they roar,1993 yet can they not3808 pass over5674 it?

23 But this2088 people5971 hath1961 a revolting5637 and a rebellious4784 heart;3820 they are revolted5493 and gone.1980

24 Neither3808 say559 they in their heart,3824 Let us now4994 fear3372 853 the LORD3068 our God,430 that giveth5414 rain,1653 both the former3138 and the latter,4456 in his season:6256 he reserveth8104 unto us the appointed2708 weeks7620 of the harvest.7105

25 Your iniquities5771 have turned away5186 these428 things, and your sins2403 have withheld4513 good2896 things from4480 you.

26 For3588 among my people5971 are found4672 wicked7563 men: they lay wait,7789 as he that setteth7918 snares;3353 they set5324 a trap,4889 they catch3920 men.376

27 As a cage3619 is full4392 of birds,5775 so3651 are their houses1004 full4392 of deceit:4820 therefore5921 3651 they are become great,1431 and waxen rich.6238

28 They are waxen fat,8080 they shine:6245 yea,1571 they overpass5674 the deeds1697 of the wicked:7451 they judge1777 not3808 the cause,1779 the cause1779 of the fatherless,3490 yet they prosper;6743 and the right4941 of the needy34 do they not3808 judge.8199

29 Shall I not3808 visit6485 for5921 these428 things? saith5002 the LORD:3068 shall not3808 my soul5315 be avenged5358 on such834 a nation1471 as this?2088

30 A wonderful8047 and horrible thing8186 is committed1961 in the land;776

31 The prophets5030 prophesy5012 falsely,8267 and the priests3548 bear rule7287 by5921 their means;3027 and my people5971 love157 to have it so:3651 and what4100 will ye do6213 in the end319 thereof?

Chapter 5

1 RUN to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now and know, and search in its broad places, if you can find a man, if there is any that executes justice, that seeks truth; and I will pardon them.

2 And though they say, The LORD lives; truly they swear falsely.

3 O LORD, thine eyes are upon the truth; thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction; they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to repent.

4 Therefore I said, It is because they are poor; they have gone astray, for they do not know the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God.

5 I will go to the princes and will speak to them; for they have known the way of the LORD and the judgment of their God; but truly they have altogether broken the yoke; they have burst the bonds.

6 Therefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them and hungry wolves of the evening shall tear them in pieces; a leopard shall lie in wait over their cities; every one that goes out thence shall be torn in pieces, because their transgressions are multiplied and become so strong that they will not repent.

7 How shall I pardon you? Your children have forsaken me and sworn by those that are no gods; when I had fed them until they were satisfied, they then committed adultery, and they fought one another in the harlots' houses.

8 They were wanton like stallions, every one lusting after his neighbor's wife.

9 Shall I not punish them for these things? says the LORD; and shall I not avenge myself on such a people as this?

10 Go up upon her walls and destroy; but make not a full end; spare her foundations, for they belong to the LORD.

11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, says the LORD.

12 They have lied against the LORD and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:

13 And the prophets shall become a whirlwind and will have nothing to say; thus shall it be done to them.

14 Therefore thus says the LORD God of hosts, Because you speak this word, behold, I will make my words fire in your mouth, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

15 Lo, I will bring a nation against you, a people from afar, O house of Israel, says the LORD; it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a people whose language you do not know; neither can you understand what they say.

16 Their quiver is like an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.

17 And they shall eat up your harvest and your bread, which your sons and your daughters should eat; they shall eat up your flocks and your herds; they shall eat up your vines and your fig trees; they shall impoverish with the sword your fortified cities in which you trust.

18 Nevertheless in those days, says the LORD, I will not make a full end of you.

19 And it shall come to pass, when you shall say, Why does the LORD our God do all these things to us? Then you shall say to them, Thus says the LORD. Because you have forsaken me and served strange gods in your land, so you shall serve strangers in a land that is not yours.

20 Declare this in the house of Jacob and publish it in Judah, saying,

21 Hear now this, O foolish people who have no understanding, who have eyes and see not, who have ears and hear not:

22 Do you not revere me? says the LORD, and will you not tremble at my presence? I have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual ordinance, that it cannot overflow; though the waves roar, yet they cannot prevail; and though they toss, yet they cannot pass over it.

23 But this people has a contentious and rebellious heart; they have revolted and gone astray.

24 Neither do they say in their heart, Let us now worship the LORD our God, who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season, who preserves for us the summer crops for the winter.

25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withheld good things from you.

26 For among my people are found wicked men; they have laid snares like hedges that they may catch men with them.

27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit;

28 Therefore they have become great and rich and have perverted judgment; they do not execute justice, and they do not judge aright the cause of the orphan; and the cause of the needy they did not judge.

29 Shall I not punish for these things? says the LORD; shall I not avenge myself on such a people as this?

30 An astonishing and horrible thing is committed in the land:

31 The prophets prophesy falsely and the priests have supported them; and my people love to have it so; and what will you do at the end?

16 Their quiver is like an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.

18 Nevertheless1571 in those1992 days,3117 saith5002 the LORD,3068 I will not3808 make6213 a full end3617 with854 you.

18 Nevertheless in those days, says the LORD, I will not make a full end of you.

19 And it shall come to pass, when you shall say, Why does the LORD our God do all these things to us? Then you shall say to them, Thus says the LORD. Because you have forsaken me and served strange gods in your land, so you shall serve strangers in a land that is not yours.

20 Declare5046 this2063 in the house1004 of Jacob,3290 and publish8085 it in Judah,3063 saying,559

20 Declare this in the house of Jacob and publish it in Judah, saying,

21 Hear8085 now4994 this,2063 O foolish5530 people,5971 and without369 understanding;3820 which have eyes,5869 and see7200 not;3808 which have ears,241 and hear8085 not: 3808

21 Hear now this, O foolish people who have no understanding, who have eyes and see not, who have ears and hear not:

22 Fear3372 ye not3808 me? saith5002 the LORD:3068 will ye not3808 tremble2342 at my presence,4480 6440 which834 have placed7760 the sand2344 for the bound1366 of the sea3220 by a perpetual5769 decree,2706 that it cannot3808 pass5674 it: and though the waves1530 thereof toss themselves,1607 yet can they not3808 prevail;3201 though they roar,1993 yet can they not3808 pass over5674 it?

22 Do you not revere me? says the LORD, and will you not tremble at my presence? I have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual ordinance, that it cannot overflow; though the waves roar, yet they cannot prevail; and though they toss, yet they cannot pass over it.

23 But this2088 people5971 hath1961 a revolting5637 and a rebellious4784 heart;3820 they are revolted5493 and gone.1980

23 But this people has a contentious and rebellious heart; they have revolted and gone astray.

24 Neither do they say in their heart, Let us now worship the LORD our God, who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season, who preserves for us the summer crops for the winter.

25 Your iniquities5771 have turned away5186 these428 things, and your sins2403 have withheld4513 good2896 things from4480 you.

25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withheld good things from you.

26 For3588 among my people5971 are found4672 wicked7563 men: they lay wait,7789 as he that setteth7918 snares;3353 they set5324 a trap,4889 they catch3920 men.376

26 For among my people are found wicked men; they have laid snares like hedges that they may catch men with them.

27 As a cage3619 is full4392 of birds,5775 so3651 are their houses1004 full4392 of deceit:4820 therefore5921 3651 they are become great,1431 and waxen rich.6238

27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit;

28 Therefore they have become great and rich and have perverted judgment; they do not execute justice, and they do not judge aright the cause of the orphan; and the cause of the needy they did not judge.

29 Shall I not3808 visit6485 for5921 these428 things? saith5002 the LORD:3068 shall not3808 my soul5315 be avenged5358 on such834 a nation1471 as this?2088

29 Shall I not punish for these things? says the LORD; shall I not avenge myself on such a people as this?

30 A wonderful8047 and horrible thing8186 is committed1961 in the land;776

30 An astonishing and horrible thing is committed in the land:

31 The prophets5030 prophesy5012 falsely,8267 and the priests3548 bear rule7287 by5921 their means;3027 and my people5971 love157 to have it so:3651 and what4100 will ye do6213 in the end319 thereof?

31 The prophets prophesy falsely and the priests have supported them; and my people love to have it so; and what will you do at the end?
