Esther

Chapter 4

1 WHEN Mordecai learned all that was done, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, howling with a loud and bitter lamentation;

2 And came even as far as the king's gate; for it was unlawful for any man to enter into the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.

3 And in every province, wherever the king's decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting and weeping and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

4 So when Esther's eunuchs and her maidens came in and told her, the queen was exceedingly disturbed; and she sent garments to clothe Mordecai and to take away his sackcloth from him; but he did not accept them.

5 Then Esther called for Hathan, one of the king's eunuchs, who had been appointed to attend her, and ordered him to go to Mordecai to know what this was and why it was,

6 So Hathan went forth to Mordecai to the streets of the city which were in front of the king's gate.

7 And Mordecai told him of all that had happened to him and of the sum of money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.

8 He also gave him a copy of the writing of the decree that was is sued in Shushan the palace, to show it to Esther, and to charge her to go in to the king to make supplication to him and to make request be fore him for her people.

9 And Hathan came in and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

10 Again Esther spoke to Hathan and commanded him to go to Mordecai, saying,

11 All the king's servants know that whosoever, whether man or woman, comes to the king into the inner court who is not called, for him there is but one law to put him to death, except the one to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live; but I have not been called to come in to the king these three days.

12 And he told Mordecai Esther's words.

13 Then Mordecai told him to tell Esther, Think not in yourself that you shall escape because you are in the king's house, more than all the other Jews.

14 For if you altogether remain silent this time, then relief and salvation shall arise to the Jews from an other place; but you and your father's house shall be destroyed; and who knows whether you have been called to come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

15 Then Esther told him to return Mordecai this answer:

16 Go, gather together all the Jews who are present in Shushan the pal ace, and fast for me, and neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day; I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and then I will go in to the king, which is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish.

17 So Mordecai went his way and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.

1 When Mordecai4782 perceived3045 all3605 that was done,6213 Mordecai4782 rent7167 his clothes,899 and put3847 on sackcloth8242 with ashes,665 and went3318 out into the middle8432 of the city,5892 and cried2199 with a loud1419 and a bitter4751 cry;2201

2 And came935 even5704 before6440 the king's4428 gate:8179 for none369 might enter935 into413 the king's4428 gate8179 clothed3830 with sackcloth.8242

3 And in every3605 province,4082 wherever4725 834 the king's4428 commandment1697 and his decree1881 came,5060 there was great1419 mourning60 among the Jews,3064 and fasting,6685 and weeping,1065 and wailing;4553 and many7227 lay3331 in sackcloth8242 and ashes.665

4 So Esther's635 maids5291 and her chamberlains5631 came935 and told5046 it her. Then was the queen4436 exceedingly3966 grieved;2342 and she sent7971 raiment899 to clothe3847 Mordecai,4782 and to take5493 away5493 his sackcloth8242 from him: but he received6901 it not.

5 Then called7121 Esther635 for Hatach,2047 one of the king's4428 chamberlains,5631 whom834 he had appointed5975 to attend6440 on her, and gave him a commandment6680 to Mordecai,4782 to know3045 what4100 it was, and why4100 it was.

6 So Hatach2047 went3318 forth3318 to Mordecai4782 to the street7339 of the city,5892 which834 was before6440 the king's4428 gate.8179

7 And Mordecai4782 told5046 him of all3605 that had happened7136 to him, and of the sum6575 of the money3701 that Haman2001 had promised559 to pay8254 to the king's4428 treasuries1595 for the Jews,3064 to destroy6 them.

8 Also he gave5414 him the copy6572 of the writing3791 of the decree1881 that was given5414 at Shushan7800 to destroy8045 them, to show7200 it to Esther,635 and to declare5046 it to her, and to charge6680 her that she should go935 in to the king,4428 to make supplication2603 to him, and to make request1245 before6440 him for her people.5971

9 And Hatach2047 came935 and told5046 Esther635 the words1697 of Mordecai.4782

10 Again Esther635 spoke559 to Hatach,2047 and gave him commandment6680 to Mordecai;4782

11 All3605 the king's4428 servants,5650 and the people5971 of the king's4428 provinces,4082 do know,3045 that whoever,834 whether man376 or women,802 shall come935 to the king4428 into413 the inner6442 court,2691 who834 is not called,7121 there is one259 law1881 of his to put him to death,4191 except905 such834 to whom834 the king4428 shall hold3447 out the golden2091 scepter,8275 that he may live:2421 but I have not been called7121 to come935 in to the king4428 these2088 thirty7970 days.3117

12 And they told5046 to Mordecai4782 Esther's635 words.1697

13 Then Mordecai4782 commanded559 to answer7725 Esther,635 Think1819 not with yourself5315 that you shall escape4422 in the king's4428 house,1004 more than all3605 the Jews.3064

14 For if518 you altogether hold2790 your peace2790 at this2063 time,6256 then shall there enlargement7305 and deliverance2020 arise5975 to the Jews3064 from another312 place;4725 but you and your father's1 house1004 shall be destroyed:6 and who4310 knows3045 whether518 you are come5060 to the kingdom4438 for such a time6256 as this?2063

15 Then Esther635 bade559 them return7725 Mordecai4782 this answer,

16 Go,3212 gather3664 together all3605 the Jews3064 that are present4672 in Shushan,7800 and fast6684 you for me, and neither408 eat398 nor408 drink8354 three7969 days,3117 night3915 or day:3117 I also1571 and my maidens5291 will fast6684 likewise;3651 and so3651 will I go935 in to the king,4428 which834 is not according to the law:1881 and if834 I perish,6 I perish.6

17 So Mordecai4782 went5674 his way, and did6213 according to all3605 that Esther635 had commanded6680 him.

9 And Hathan came in and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

9 And Hatach2047 came935 and told5046 Esther635 the words1697 of Mordecai.4782

10 Again Esther spoke to Hathan and commanded him to go to Mordecai, saying,

10 Again Esther635 spoke559 to Hatach,2047 and gave him commandment6680 to Mordecai;4782

12 And they told5046 to Mordecai4782 Esther's635 words.1697

13 Then Mordecai told him to tell Esther, Think not in yourself that you shall escape because you are in the king's house, more than all the other Jews.

13 Then Mordecai4782 commanded559 to answer7725 Esther,635 Think1819 not with yourself5315 that you shall escape4422 in the king's4428 house,1004 more than all3605 the Jews.3064

14 For if you altogether remain silent this time, then relief and salvation shall arise to the Jews from an other place; but you and your father's house shall be destroyed; and who knows whether you have been called to come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

14 For if518 you altogether hold2790 your peace2790 at this2063 time,6256 then shall there enlargement7305 and deliverance2020 arise5975 to the Jews3064 from another312 place;4725 but you and your father's1 house1004 shall be destroyed:6 and who4310 knows3045 whether518 you are come5060 to the kingdom4438 for such a time6256 as this?2063

15 Then Esther told him to return Mordecai this answer:

15 Then Esther635 bade559 them return7725 Mordecai4782 this answer,

16 Go, gather together all the Jews who are present in Shushan the pal ace, and fast for me, and neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day; I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and then I will go in to the king, which is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish.

17 So Mordecai went his way and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.

17 So Mordecai4782 went5674 his way, and did6213 according to all3605 that Esther635 had commanded6680 him.
