Chapter 11

1 NOW there was a man who was sick, Lazarus of the town of Bethany, the brother of Mary and Martha.

2 This is the Mary who anointed the feet of Jesus with perfume and wiped them with her hair. Lazarus who was sick, was her brother.

3 His two sisters therefore sent to Jesus, saying, Our Lord, behold, the one whom you love is sick.

4 Jesus said, This is not a sickness of death, but for the sake of the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified on his account.

5 Now Jesus loved Martha and Mary and Lazarus.

6 When he heard he was sick, he remained two days in the place where he was.

7 After that he said to his disciples, Come, let us go again to Judaea.

8 His disciples said to him, Teacher, not long ago the Jews wanted to stone you, and yet are you going there again?

9 Jesus said to them, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walks by day time, he will not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

10 But if a man travels at night time, he will stumble, because there is no light in it.

11 Jesus said these things; and after that he said to them, Our friend Lazarus is asleep; but I am going to awake him.

12 His disciples said to him, Our Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get well.

13 But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that what he said was sleeping in bed.

14 Then Jesus said to them, plainly, Lazarus is dead.

15 And I am glad I was not there, for your sakes, so that you may believe; but let us walk there.

16 Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go, and die with him.

17 So Jesus came to Bethany, and he found that he had been four days in the tomb.

18 Now Bethany was towards Jerusalem, a distance of about two miles.

19 And many Jews kept coming to Martha and Mary, to comfort their hearts concerning their brother.

20 When Martha heard that Jesus had come, she went out to meet him; but Mary sat in the house.

21 Then Martha said to Jesus, My Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

22 But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, he will give you.

23 Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise up.

24 Martha said to him, I know he will rise up in the resurrection at the last day.

25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, even though he die, he shall live.

26 And whoever is alive and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?

27 She said to him, Yes, my Lord; I do believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come to the world.

28 And when she had said these things, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, and said to her, Our teacher has come, and he is calling you.

29 When Mary heard it, she rose up quickly and came to him.

30 Jesus had not yet come into the town, but he was still at the same place where Martha met him.

31 The Jews also who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary rise up quickly and go out, followed her, for they thought she was going to the tomb to weep.

32 When Mary came where Jesus was, and saw him, she threw herself at his feet, and said to him, My Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping, who had come with her, he was moved in his spirit, and was greatly disturbed.

34 And he said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Our Lord, come and see.

35 And Jesus was in tears.

36 The Jews then said, Look, how much he loved him!

37 Some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of that blind man, have also kept this man from dying?

38 As Jesus was disturbed in himself because of them, he came to the tomb. That tomb was a cave, and a stone was placed at the entrance.

39 Jesus said, Take away this stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, My Lord, he is already disfigured, for he is dead four days.

40 Jesus said to her, Did not I say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?

41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, O Father, I thank you for you have heard me,

42 And I know that you always hear me; but I say these things just because of this people who stand around, so that they may believe that you have sent me.

43 And when he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come outside.

44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with burial clothes; and his face bound with a burial napkin. Jesus said to them, Loose him and let him go.

45 Many of the Jews who had come to Mary, when they saw what Jesus had done, believed in him.

46 And some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them everything Jesus had done.

47 So the high priests and the Pharisees gathered together and said, What shall we do? for this man does many miracles?

48 If we allow him to continue like this, all men will believe in him; and the Romans will come and take over both our country and our people.

49 But one of them, called Caiaphas, who was the high priest for that year, said to them, You know nothing;

50 Nor do you reason that it is much better for us that one man should die instead of the people, and not all the people perish.

51 He did not say this of himself; but because he was the high priest for that year, he prophesied that Jesus had to die for the sake of the people;

52 And not only for the sake of the people, but also to gather together the children of God who are scattered abroad.

53 And from that very day, they decided to kill him.

54 Jesus therefore did not walk openly among the Jews, but went away thence to a place which is close to the wilderness, in the province of Ephraim; and he remained there with his disciples.

55 Now the Jewish passover was at hand; and many went up from the towns to Jerusalem, before the feast, to purify themselves.

56 And they were looking for Jesus, and at the temple they kept saying to one another, What do you think, will he not come to the feast?

57 But the high priests and the Pharisees had already commanded, that if any man should know where he is, to let them know, so that they might seize him.

Chapter 11

1 Now1161 a certain5100 man was sick,770 named Lazarus,2976 of Bethany,963 the town2968 of Mary3137 and her sister79 Martha.3136

2 (It was that Mary3137 which3588 anointed218 the Lord2962 with ointment,3464 and wiped1591 his feet4228 with her hair,2359 whose3739 brother80 Lazarus2976 was sick.770)

3 Therefore3767 his sisters79 sent649 to him, saying,3004 Lord,2962 behold,2396 he whom3739 you love5368 is sick.770

4 When Jesus2424 heard191 that, he said,2036 This3778 sickness769 is not to death,2288 but for the glory1391 of God,2316 that the Son5207 of God2316 might be glorified1392 thereby.1223 846

5 Now1161 Jesus2424 loved25 Martha,3136 and her sister,79 and Lazarus.2976

6 When5613 he had heard191 therefore3767 that he was sick,770 he stayed3306 two1417 days2250 still in the same place5117 where he was.

7 Then1899 after3326 that said3004 he to his disciples,3101 Let us go71 into1519 Judaea2449 again.3825

8 His disciples3101 say3004 to him, Master,4461 the Jews2453 of late3568 sought2212 to stone3034 you; and go5217 you thither1563 again?3825

9 Jesus2424 answered,611 Are there not twelve1427 hours5610 in the day?2250 If1437 any5100 man walk4043 in the day,2250 he stumbles4350 not, because3754 he sees991 the light5457 of this5127 world.2889

10 But if1437 a man5100 walk4043 in the night,3571 he stumbles,4350 because3754 there is no3756 light5457 in him.

11 These5023 things5023 said2036 he: and after3326 that he said3004 to them, Our friend5384 Lazarus2976 sleeps;2837 but I go,4198 that I may awake1852 him out of sleep.1852

12 Then3767 said2036 his disciples,3101 Lord,2962 if1487 he sleep,2837 he shall do4982 well.4982

13 However, Jesus2424 spoke2046 of his death:2288 but they thought1380 that he had spoken3004 of taking of rest2838 in sleep.5258

14 Then3767 said2036 Jesus2424 to them plainly,3954 Lazarus2976 is dead.599

15 And I am glad5463 for your5209 sakes that I was not there,1563 to the intent2443 you may believe;4100 nevertheless235 let us go71 to him.

16 Then3767 said2036 Thomas,2381 which3588 is called3004 Didymus,1324 to his fellow disciples,4827 Let us also2532 go,71 that we may die599 with him.

17 Then3767 when Jesus2424 came,2064 he found2147 that he had lain in the grave3419 four5064 days2250 already.2235

18 Now1161 Bethany963 was near1451 to Jerusalem,2414 about5618 fifteen1178 furlongs4712 off:575

19 And many4183 of the Jews2453 came2064 to Martha3136 and Mary,3137 to comfort3888 them concerning4012 their brother.80

20 Then3767 Martha,3136 as soon as she heard191 that Jesus2424 was coming,2064 went5221 and met5221 him: but Mary3137 sat2516 still in the house.3624

21 Then3767 said2036 Martha3136 to Jesus,2424 Lord,2962 if1487 you had been2258 here,5602 my brother80 had not died.599

22 But I know,1492 that even2532 now,3568 whatever3748 302 you will ask154 of God,2316 God2316 will give1325 it you.

23 Jesus2424 said3004 to her, Your brother80 shall rise450 again.450

24 Martha3136 said3004 to him, I know1492 that he shall rise450 again450 in the resurrection386 at1722 the last2078 day.2250

25 Jesus2424 said2036 to her, I am1510 the resurrection,386 and the life:2222 he that believes4100 in me, though2579 he were dead,599 yet shall he live:2198

26 And2532 whoever3956 3588 lives2198 and believes4100 in me shall never3364 3588 165 die.599 Believe4100 you this?5124

27 She said3004 to him, Yes,3483 Lord:2962 I believe4100 that you are1488 the Christ,5547 the Son5207 of God,2316 which3588 should come2064 into1519 the world.2889

28 And when she had so5023 said,2036 she went565 her way, and called5455 Mary3137 her sister79 secretly,2977 saying,2036 The Master1320 is come,3918 and calls5455 for you.

29 As soon as she heard191 that, she arose1453 quickly,5035 and came2064 to him.

30 Now1161 Jesus2424 was not yet3768 come2064 into1519 the town,2968 but was in that place5117 where3699 Martha3136 met5221 him.

31 The Jews2453 then3767 which3588 were with her in the house,3614 and comforted3888 her, when they saw1492 Mary,3137 that she rose450 up hastily5030 and went1831 out, followed190 her, saying,3004 She goes5217 to the grave3419 to weep2799 there.1563

32 Then3767 when5613 Mary3137 was come2064 where3699 Jesus2424 was, and saw1492 him, she fell4098 down at1519 his feet,4228 saying3004 to him, Lord,2962 if1487 you had been2258 here,5602 my brother80 had not died.599

33 When5613 Jesus2424 therefore3767 saw1492 her weeping,2799 and the Jews2453 also2532 weeping2799 which came4905 with her, he groaned1690 in the spirit,4151 and was troubled.5015

34 And said,2036 Where4226 have you laid5087 him? They said3004 to him, Lord,2962 come2064 and see.1492

35 Jesus2424 wept.1145

36 Then3767 said3004 the Jews,2453 Behold2396 how4459 he loved5368 him!

37 And some5100 of them said,2036 Could1410 not this3778 man, which3588 opened455 the eyes3788 of the blind,5185 have caused4160 that even2532 this3778 man should not have died?599

38 Jesus2424 therefore3767 again3825 groaning1690 in himself1438 comes2064 to the grave.3419 It was a cave,4693 and a stone3037 lay1945 on it.

39 Jesus2424 said,3004 Take142 you away the stone.3037 Martha,3136 the sister79 of him that was dead,2348 said3004 to him, Lord,2962 by this2235 time2235 he stinks:3605 for he has been2076 dead four5066 days.5066

40 Jesus2424 said3004 to her, Said2036 I not to you, that, if1437 you would believe,4100 you should see3700 the glory1391 of God?2316

41 Then3767 they took142 away the stone3037 from the place where3757 the dead2348 was laid.2749 And Jesus2424 lifted142 up his eyes,3788 and said,2036 Father,3962 I thank2168 you that you have heard191 me.

42 And I knew1492 that you hear191 me always:3842 but because1223 of the people3793 which3588 stand4026 by I said2036 it, that they may believe4100 that you have sent649 me.

43 And when he thus5023 had spoken,2036 he cried2905 with a loud3173 voice,5456 Lazarus,2976 come1204 forth.1854

44 And he that was dead2348 came1831 forth,1831 bound1210 hand5495 and foot4228 with grave clothes:2750 and his face3799 was bound4019 about4019 with a napkin.4676 Jesus2424 said3004 to them, Loose3089 him, and let863 him go.5217

45 Then3767 many4183 of the Jews2453 which3588 came2064 to Mary,3137 and had seen2300 the things which3739 Jesus2424 did,4160 believed4100 on1519 him.

46 But some5100 of them went565 their ways to the Pharisees,5330 and told2036 them what3739 things Jesus2424 had done.4160

47 Then3767 gathered4863 the chief749 priests749 and the Pharisees5330 a council,4892 and said,3004 What5101 do4160 we? for this3778 man444 does4160 many4183 miracles.4592

48 If1437 we let863 him thus3779 alone,863 all3956 men will believe4100 on1519 him: and the Romans4514 shall come2064 and take142 away both2532 our place5117 and nation.1484

49 And one1520 of them, named Caiaphas,2533 being5607 the high749 priest749 that same1565 year,1763 said2036 to them, You know1492 nothing3756 at3762 all,3762

50 Nor3761 consider1260 that it is expedient4851 for us, that one1520 man444 should die599 for the people,2992 and that the whole3650 nation1484 perish622 not.

51 And this5124 spoke2036 he not of himself:1438 but being5607 high749 priest749 that year,1763 he prophesied4395 that Jesus2424 should3195 die599 for that nation;1484

52 And not for that nation1484 only,3440 but that also2532 he should gather4863 together4863 in one1520 the children5043 of God2316 that were scattered1287 abroad.1287

53 Then3767 from that day2250 forth they took1011 counsel1011 together1011 for to put615 him to death.615

54 Jesus2424 therefore3767 walked4043 no3765 more2089 openly3954 among1722 the Jews;2453 but went565 there1564 to a country5561 near1451 to the wilderness,2048 into1519 a city4172 called3004 Ephraim,2187 and there1563 continued1304 with his disciples.3101

55 And the Jews'2453 passover3957 was near1451 at1451 hand: and many4183 went305 out of the country5561 up to Jerusalem2414 before4253 the passover,3957 to purify48 themselves.1438

56 Then3767 sought2212 they for Jesus,2424 and spoke3004 among3326 themselves,240 as they stood2476 in the temple,2411 What5101 think1380 you, that he will not come2064 to the feast?1859

57 Now1161 both2532 the chief749 priests749 and the Pharisees5330 had given1325 a commandment,1785 that, if1437 any5100 man knew1097 where4226 he were, he should show3377 it, that they might take4084 him.

Chapter 11

1 NOW there was a man who was sick, Lazarus of the town of Bethany, the brother of Mary and Martha.

1 Now1161 a certain5100 man was sick,770 named Lazarus,2976 of Bethany,963 the town2968 of Mary3137 and her sister79 Martha.3136

2 This is the Mary who anointed the feet of Jesus with perfume and wiped them with her hair. Lazarus who was sick, was her brother.

2 (It was that Mary3137 which3588 anointed218 the Lord2962 with ointment,3464 and wiped1591 his feet4228 with her hair,2359 whose3739 brother80 Lazarus2976 was sick.770)

3 His two sisters therefore sent to Jesus, saying, Our Lord, behold, the one whom you love is sick.

3 Therefore3767 his sisters79 sent649 to him, saying,3004 Lord,2962 behold,2396 he whom3739 you love5368 is sick.770

4 Jesus said, This is not a sickness of death, but for the sake of the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified on his account.

4 When Jesus2424 heard191 that, he said,2036 This3778 sickness769 is not to death,2288 but for the glory1391 of God,2316 that the Son5207 of God2316 might be glorified1392 thereby.1223 846

5 Now Jesus loved Martha and Mary and Lazarus.

5 Now1161 Jesus2424 loved25 Martha,3136 and her sister,79 and Lazarus.2976

6 When he heard he was sick, he remained two days in the place where he was.

6 When5613 he had heard191 therefore3767 that he was sick,770 he stayed3306 two1417 days2250 still in the same place5117 where he was.

7 After that he said to his disciples, Come, let us go again to Judaea.

7 Then1899 after3326 that said3004 he to his disciples,3101 Let us go71 into1519 Judaea2449 again.3825

8 His disciples said to him, Teacher, not long ago the Jews wanted to stone you, and yet are you going there again?

8 His disciples3101 say3004 to him, Master,4461 the Jews2453 of late3568 sought2212 to stone3034 you; and go5217 you thither1563 again?3825

9 Jesus said to them, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walks by day time, he will not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

9 Jesus2424 answered,611 Are there not twelve1427 hours5610 in the day?2250 If1437 any5100 man walk4043 in the day,2250 he stumbles4350 not, because3754 he sees991 the light5457 of this5127 world.2889

10 But if a man travels at night time, he will stumble, because there is no light in it.

10 But if1437 a man5100 walk4043 in the night,3571 he stumbles,4350 because3754 there is no3756 light5457 in him.

11 Jesus said these things; and after that he said to them, Our friend Lazarus is asleep; but I am going to awake him.

11 These5023 things5023 said2036 he: and after3326 that he said3004 to them, Our friend5384 Lazarus2976 sleeps;2837 but I go,4198 that I may awake1852 him out of sleep.1852

12 His disciples said to him, Our Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get well.

12 Then3767 said2036 his disciples,3101 Lord,2962 if1487 he sleep,2837 he shall do4982 well.4982

13 But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that what he said was sleeping in bed.

13 However, Jesus2424 spoke2046 of his death:2288 but they thought1380 that he had spoken3004 of taking of rest2838 in sleep.5258

14 Then Jesus said to them, plainly, Lazarus is dead.

14 Then3767 said2036 Jesus2424 to them plainly,3954 Lazarus2976 is dead.599

15 And I am glad I was not there, for your sakes, so that you may believe; but let us walk there.

15 And I am glad5463 for your5209 sakes that I was not there,1563 to the intent2443 you may believe;4100 nevertheless235 let us go71 to him.

16 Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go, and die with him.

16 Then3767 said2036 Thomas,2381 which3588 is called3004 Didymus,1324 to his fellow disciples,4827 Let us also2532 go,71 that we may die599 with him.

17 So Jesus came to Bethany, and he found that he had been four days in the tomb.

17 Then3767 when Jesus2424 came,2064 he found2147 that he had lain in the grave3419 four5064 days2250 already.2235

18 Now Bethany was towards Jerusalem, a distance of about two miles.

18 Now1161 Bethany963 was near1451 to Jerusalem,2414 about5618 fifteen1178 furlongs4712 off:575

19 And many Jews kept coming to Martha and Mary, to comfort their hearts concerning their brother.

19 And many4183 of the Jews2453 came2064 to Martha3136 and Mary,3137 to comfort3888 them concerning4012 their brother.80

20 When Martha heard that Jesus had come, she went out to meet him; but Mary sat in the house.

20 Then3767 Martha,3136 as soon as she heard191 that Jesus2424 was coming,2064 went5221 and met5221 him: but Mary3137 sat2516 still in the house.3624

21 Then Martha said to Jesus, My Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

21 Then3767 said2036 Martha3136 to Jesus,2424 Lord,2962 if1487 you had been2258 here,5602 my brother80 had not died.599

22 But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, he will give you.

22 But I know,1492 that even2532 now,3568 whatever3748 302 you will ask154 of God,2316 God2316 will give1325 it you.

23 Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise up.

23 Jesus2424 said3004 to her, Your brother80 shall rise450 again.450

24 Martha said to him, I know he will rise up in the resurrection at the last day.

24 Martha3136 said3004 to him, I know1492 that he shall rise450 again450 in the resurrection386 at1722 the last2078 day.2250

25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, even though he die, he shall live.

25 Jesus2424 said2036 to her, I am1510 the resurrection,386 and the life:2222 he that believes4100 in me, though2579 he were dead,599 yet shall he live:2198

26 And whoever is alive and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?

26 And2532 whoever3956 3588 lives2198 and believes4100 in me shall never3364 3588 165 die.599 Believe4100 you this?5124

27 She said to him, Yes, my Lord; I do believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come to the world.

27 She said3004 to him, Yes,3483 Lord:2962 I believe4100 that you are1488 the Christ,5547 the Son5207 of God,2316 which3588 should come2064 into1519 the world.2889

28 And when she had said these things, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, and said to her, Our teacher has come, and he is calling you.

28 And when she had so5023 said,2036 she went565 her way, and called5455 Mary3137 her sister79 secretly,2977 saying,2036 The Master1320 is come,3918 and calls5455 for you.

29 When Mary heard it, she rose up quickly and came to him.

29 As soon as she heard191 that, she arose1453 quickly,5035 and came2064 to him.

30 Jesus had not yet come into the town, but he was still at the same place where Martha met him.

30 Now1161 Jesus2424 was not yet3768 come2064 into1519 the town,2968 but was in that place5117 where3699 Martha3136 met5221 him.

31 The Jews also who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary rise up quickly and go out, followed her, for they thought she was going to the tomb to weep.

32 When Mary came where Jesus was, and saw him, she threw herself at his feet, and said to him, My Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping, who had come with her, he was moved in his spirit, and was greatly disturbed.

33 When5613 Jesus2424 therefore3767 saw1492 her weeping,2799 and the Jews2453 also2532 weeping2799 which came4905 with her, he groaned1690 in the spirit,4151 and was troubled.5015

34 And he said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Our Lord, come and see.

34 And said,2036 Where4226 have you laid5087 him? They said3004 to him, Lord,2962 come2064 and see.1492

35 And Jesus was in tears.

35 Jesus2424 wept.1145

36 The Jews then said, Look, how much he loved him!

36 Then3767 said3004 the Jews,2453 Behold2396 how4459 he loved5368 him!

37 Some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of that blind man, have also kept this man from dying?

37 And some5100 of them said,2036 Could1410 not this3778 man, which3588 opened455 the eyes3788 of the blind,5185 have caused4160 that even2532 this3778 man should not have died?599

38 As Jesus was disturbed in himself because of them, he came to the tomb. That tomb was a cave, and a stone was placed at the entrance.

38 Jesus2424 therefore3767 again3825 groaning1690 in himself1438 comes2064 to the grave.3419 It was a cave,4693 and a stone3037 lay1945 on it.

39 Jesus said, Take away this stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, My Lord, he is already disfigured, for he is dead four days.

39 Jesus2424 said,3004 Take142 you away the stone.3037 Martha,3136 the sister79 of him that was dead,2348 said3004 to him, Lord,2962 by this2235 time2235 he stinks:3605 for he has been2076 dead four5066 days.5066

40 Jesus said to her, Did not I say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?

40 Jesus2424 said3004 to her, Said2036 I not to you, that, if1437 you would believe,4100 you should see3700 the glory1391 of God?2316

41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, O Father, I thank you for you have heard me,

41 Then3767 they took142 away the stone3037 from the place where3757 the dead2348 was laid.2749 And Jesus2424 lifted142 up his eyes,3788 and said,2036 Father,3962 I thank2168 you that you have heard191 me.

42 And I know that you always hear me; but I say these things just because of this people who stand around, so that they may believe that you have sent me.

42 And I knew1492 that you hear191 me always:3842 but because1223 of the people3793 which3588 stand4026 by I said2036 it, that they may believe4100 that you have sent649 me.

43 And when he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come outside.

43 And when he thus5023 had spoken,2036 he cried2905 with a loud3173 voice,5456 Lazarus,2976 come1204 forth.1854

44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with burial clothes; and his face bound with a burial napkin. Jesus said to them, Loose him and let him go.

45 Many of the Jews who had come to Mary, when they saw what Jesus had done, believed in him.

45 Then3767 many4183 of the Jews2453 which3588 came2064 to Mary,3137 and had seen2300 the things which3739 Jesus2424 did,4160 believed4100 on1519 him.

46 And some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them everything Jesus had done.

46 But some5100 of them went565 their ways to the Pharisees,5330 and told2036 them what3739 things Jesus2424 had done.4160

47 So the high priests and the Pharisees gathered together and said, What shall we do? for this man does many miracles?

47 Then3767 gathered4863 the chief749 priests749 and the Pharisees5330 a council,4892 and said,3004 What5101 do4160 we? for this3778 man444 does4160 many4183 miracles.4592

48 If we allow him to continue like this, all men will believe in him; and the Romans will come and take over both our country and our people.

48 If1437 we let863 him thus3779 alone,863 all3956 men will believe4100 on1519 him: and the Romans4514 shall come2064 and take142 away both2532 our place5117 and nation.1484

49 But one of them, called Caiaphas, who was the high priest for that year, said to them, You know nothing;

49 And one1520 of them, named Caiaphas,2533 being5607 the high749 priest749 that same1565 year,1763 said2036 to them, You know1492 nothing3756 at3762 all,3762

50 Nor do you reason that it is much better for us that one man should die instead of the people, and not all the people perish.

50 Nor3761 consider1260 that it is expedient4851 for us, that one1520 man444 should die599 for the people,2992 and that the whole3650 nation1484 perish622 not.

51 He did not say this of himself; but because he was the high priest for that year, he prophesied that Jesus had to die for the sake of the people;

51 And this5124 spoke2036 he not of himself:1438 but being5607 high749 priest749 that year,1763 he prophesied4395 that Jesus2424 should3195 die599 for that nation;1484

52 And not only for the sake of the people, but also to gather together the children of God who are scattered abroad.

52 And not for that nation1484 only,3440 but that also2532 he should gather4863 together4863 in one1520 the children5043 of God2316 that were scattered1287 abroad.1287

53 And from that very day, they decided to kill him.

53 Then3767 from that day2250 forth they took1011 counsel1011 together1011 for to put615 him to death.615

54 Jesus therefore did not walk openly among the Jews, but went away thence to a place which is close to the wilderness, in the province of Ephraim; and he remained there with his disciples.

55 Now the Jewish passover was at hand; and many went up from the towns to Jerusalem, before the feast, to purify themselves.

55 And the Jews'2453 passover3957 was near1451 at1451 hand: and many4183 went305 out of the country5561 up to Jerusalem2414 before4253 the passover,3957 to purify48 themselves.1438

56 And they were looking for Jesus, and at the temple they kept saying to one another, What do you think, will he not come to the feast?

56 Then3767 sought2212 they for Jesus,2424 and spoke3004 among3326 themselves,240 as they stood2476 in the temple,2411 What5101 think1380 you, that he will not come2064 to the feast?1859

57 But the high priests and the Pharisees had already commanded, that if any man should know where he is, to let them know, so that they might seize him.

57 Now1161 both2532 the chief749 priests749 and the Pharisees5330 had given1325 a commandment,1785 that, if1437 any5100 man knew1097 where4226 he were, he should show3377 it, that they might take4084 him.
