Chapter 40

1 And it came1961 to pass after310 these428 things,1697 that the butler4945 of the king4428 of Egypt4714 and his baker644 had offended2398 their lord113 the king4428 of Egypt.4714

2 And Pharaoh6547 was wroth7107 against5921 two8147 of his officers,5631 against5921 the chief8269 of the butlers,4945 and against5921 the chief8269 of the bakers.644

3 And he put5414 them in ward4929 in the house1004 of the captain8269 of the guard,2876 into413 the prison,1004 5470 the place4725 where834 Joseph3130 was bound.631

4 And the captain8269 of the guard2876 charged6485 Joseph3130 with them, and he served8334 them: and they continued1961 a season3117 in ward.4929

5 And they dreamed2492 a dream2472 both8147 of them, each man376 his dream2472 in one259 night,3915 each man376 according to the interpretation6623 of his dream,2472 the butler4945 and the baker644 of the king4428 of Egypt,4714 which834 were bound631 in the prison.1004

6 And Joseph3130 came935 in to them in the morning,1242 and looked7200 on them, and, behold,2009 they were sad.2196

7 And he asked7592 Pharaoh's6547 officers5631 that were with him in the ward4929 of his lord's113 house,1004 saying,559 Why4069 look6440 you so sadly7451 to day?3117

8 And they said559 to him, We have dreamed2492 a dream,2472 and there is no369 interpreter6622 of it. And Joseph3130 said559 to them, Do not interpretations6623 belong to God?430 tell5608 me them, I pray4994 you.

9 And the chief8269 butler4945 told5608 his dream2472 to Joseph,3130 and said559 to him, In my dream,2472 behold,2009 a vine1612 was before6440 me;

10 And in the vine1612 were three7969 branches:8299 and it was as though it budded,6524 and her blossoms5322 shot5927 forth; and the clusters811 thereof brought1310 forth1310 ripe1310 grapes:6025

11 And Pharaoh's6547 cup3563 was in my hand:3027 and I took3947 the grapes,6025 and pressed7818 them into413 Pharaoh's6547 cup,3563 and I gave5414 the cup3563 into5921 Pharaoh's6547 hand.3709

12 And Joseph3130 said559 to him, This2088 is the interpretation6623 of it: The three7969 branches8299 are three7969 days:3117

13 Yet5750 within three7969 days3117 shall Pharaoh6547 lift5375 up your head,7218 and restore7725 you to your place:3653 and you shall deliver5414 Pharaoh's6547 cup3563 into his hand,3027 after the former7223 manner4941 when834 you were1961 his butler.4945

14 But think2142 on me when834 it shall be well3190 with you, and show6213 kindness,2617 I pray4994 you, to me, and make mention2142 of me to Pharaoh,6547 and bring3318 me out of this2088 house:1004

15 For indeed I was stolen1589 away out of the land776 of the Hebrews:5680 and here6311 also1571 have I done6213 nothing3808 3972 that they should put7760 me into the dungeon.953

16 When the chief8269 baker644 saw7200 that the interpretation6623 was good,2896 he said559 to Joseph,3130 I also637 was in my dream,2472 and, behold,2009 I had three7969 white2751 baskets5536 on5921 my head:7218

17 And in the uppermost5945 basket5536 there was of all3605 manner of bakemeats3978 for Pharaoh;6547 and the birds5775 did eat398 them out of the basket5536 on my head.7218

18 And Joseph3130 answered6030 and said,559 This2088 is the interpretation6623 thereof: The three7969 baskets5536 are three7969 days:3117

19 Yet5750 within three7969 days3117 shall Pharaoh6547 lift5375 up your head7218 from off5921 you, and shall hang8518 you on5921 a tree;6086 and the birds5775 shall eat398 your flesh1320 from off5921 you.

20 And it came1961 to pass the third7992 day,3117 which was Pharaoh's6547 birthday,3117 3205 that he made6213 a feast4960 to all3605 his servants:5650 and he lifted5375 up the head7218 of the chief8269 butler4945 and of the chief8269 baker644 among8432 his servants.5650

21 And he restored7725 the chief8269 butler4945 to his butlership4945 again;7725 and he gave5414 the cup3563 into5921 Pharaoh's6547 hand:3709

22 But he hanged8518 the chief8269 baker:644 as Joseph3130 had interpreted6622 to them.

23 Yet did not the chief8269 butler4945 remember2142 Joseph,3130 but forgot7911 him.

Chapter 40

1 AND it came to pass after these things that the chief butler of the king of Egypt and the chief baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.

2 And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.

3 And he put them into the prison in the house of the commander of the guard, in the ward where Joseph was bound.

4 And the commander of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; and they remained for some time in the prison.

5 And they both dreamed, each man his own dream in the same night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison.

6 And Joseph came in to them in the morning, and saw them, and behold, they were sad.

7 So he asked Pharaoh's officers who were with him in the prison of his master's house, saying, Why do you look so sad today?

8 And they said to him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one to interpret it. And Joseph said to them, Behold, the interpretations belong to God; tell them to me.

9 Then the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;

10 And in the vine were three branches; and when it budded, its blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes;

11 And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hands.

12 And Joseph said to him, This is the interpretation of your dream: The three branches are three days;

13 After three days Pharaoh shall remember you and restore you to your position; and you shall give Pharaoh's cup into his hand, as you did before when you were his butler.

14 But remember me when it shall be well with you, and do me a favor and justice, and make mention of me in the presence of Pharaoh, and bring me out of this prison house;

15 For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews; and here also I have done nothing that they should put me into the prison.

16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, I also saw in my dream, and, behold. I had three baskets containing white bread on my head;

17 And in the uppermost basket there was of every kind of food for Pharaoh, prepared by a baker; and the birds of prey were eating it out of the basket on my head.

18 And Joseph answered and said to him, This is the interpretation of your dream: The three baskets are three days;

19 After three days Pharaoh shall have you beheaded, and then shall crucify you on a tree, and the birds of prey shall eat your flesh from off you.

20 And it came to pass on the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a banquet for all his servants; and he remembered the chief butler and the chief baker among his servants.

21 And he restored the chief butler to his position; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hands:

22 But he crucified the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.

23 Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.
