Isaiah

Chapter 48

1 Hear8085 you this,2063 O house1004 of Jacob,3290 which are called7121 by the name8034 of Israel,3478 and are come3318 forth3318 out of the waters4325 of Judah,3063 which swear7650 by the name8034 of the LORD,3068 and make mention2142 of the God430 of Israel,3478 but not in truth,571 nor3808 in righteousness.6666

2 For they call7121 themselves of the holy6944 city,5892 and stay5564 themselves on the God430 of Israel;3478 The LORD3068 of hosts6635 is his name.8034

3 I have declared5046 the former7223 things from the beginning;227 and they went3318 forth3318 out of my mouth,6310 and I showed8085 them; I did6213 them suddenly,6597 and they came935 to pass.

4 Because I knew1847 that you are obstinate,7186 and your neck6203 is an iron1270 sinew,1517 and your brow4696 brass;5154

5 I have even from the beginning227 declared5046 it to you; before2962 it came935 to pass I showed8085 it you: lest6435 you should say,559 My idol6090 has done6213 them, and my graven6459 image, and my molten5262 image, has commanded6680 them.

6 You have heard,8085 see2372 all3605 this; and will not you declare5046 it? I have showed8085 you new2319 things from this time,6258 even hidden5341 things, and you did not know3045 them.

7 They are created1254 now,6258 and not from the beginning;227 even before6440 the day3117 when you heard8085 them not; lest6435 you should say,559 Behold,2009 I knew3045 them.

8 Yes,1571 you heard8085 not; yes,1571 you knew3045 not; yes,1571 from that time227 that your ear241 was not opened:6605 for I knew3045 that you would deal very898 treacherously,898 and were called7121 a transgressor6586 from the womb.990

9 For my name's8034 sake4616 will I defer748 my anger,639 and for my praise8416 will I refrain2413 for you, that I cut3772 you not off.

10 Behold,2009 I have refined6884 you, but not with silver;3701 I have chosen977 you in the furnace3564 of affliction.6040

11 For my own sake,4616 even for my own sake,4616 will I do6213 it: for how349 should my name be polluted?2490 and I will not give5414 my glory3519 to another.312

12 Listen8085 to me, O Jacob3290 and Israel,3478 my called;7121 I am he; I am the first,7223 I also637 am the last.314

13 My hand3027 also637 has laid the foundation3245 of the earth,776 and my right3225 hand3225 has spanned2946 the heavens:8064 when I call7121 to them, they stand5975 up together.3162

14 All3605 you, assemble6908 yourselves, and hear;8085 which4310 among them has declared5046 these428 things? The LORD3068 has loved157 him: he will do6213 his pleasure2656 on Babylon,894 and his arm2220 shall be on the Chaldeans.3778

15 I, even I, have spoken;1696 yes,637 I have called7121 him: I have brought935 him, and he shall make his way1870 prosperous.6743

16 Come7126 you near7126 to me, hear8085 you this;2063 I have not spoken1696 in secret5643 from the beginning;7218 from the time6256 that it was, there8033 am I: and now6258 the Lord136 GOD,3069 and his Spirit,7307 has sent7971 me.

17 Thus3541 said559 the LORD,3068 your Redeemer,1350 the Holy6918 One of Israel;3478 I am the LORD3068 your God430 which teaches3925 you to profit,3276 which leads1869 you by the way1870 that you should go.3212

18 O that you had listened7181 to my commandments!4687 then had your peace7965 been1961 as a river,5104 and your righteousness6666 as the waves1530 of the sea:3220

19 Your seed2233 also had been1961 as the sand,2344 and the offspring6631 of your bowels4578 like the gravel4579 thereof; his name8034 should not have been cut3772 off nor3808 destroyed8045 from before6440 me.

20 Go3318 you forth3318 of Babylon,894 flee1272 you from the Chaldeans,3778 with a voice6963 of singing7440 declare5046 you, tell8085 this,2063 utter3318 it even to the end7097 of the earth;776 say559 you, The LORD3068 has redeemed1350 his servant5650 Jacob.3290

21 And they thirsted6770 not when he led3212 them through the deserts:2723 he caused the waters4325 to flow5140 out of the rock6697 for them: he split1234 the rock6697 also, and the waters4325 gushed2100 out.

22 There is no369 peace,7965 said559 the LORD,3068 to the wicked.7563

Chapter 48

1 HEAR these things, O house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel and are come forth from the loins of Judah, who swear by the name of the LORD and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth nor in righteousness.

2 For they are called out of the holy city and they rely upon the God of Israel; the LORD of hosts is his name.

3 I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I showed them to you; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass.

4 Because I knew that you are obstinate and your neck is an iron sinew and your brow brass;

5 I have made them known to you from of old; before they came to pass I declared them to you, lest you should say, My idols did them; and my graven images and my molten images have saved me.

6 I have heard and seen all these things; and will you not declare them? I have proclaimed to you new things from this time, even hidden things, and you did not know them.

7 They are created now, and not of old; even before the day when you did not hear of them, lest you should say, Behold, I knew them.

8 Yea, you have neither heard nor known of them; nor were your ears opened of old; for I knew that you surely would lie and that you were called a wicked one from the womb.

9 For my name's sake will I defer my anger, and for my praise will I keep you, and I will not destroy you.

10 Behold, I have refined you, but not with silver; I have purified you in the furnace of affliction.

11 For my own sake, will I do it, that my name may not be polluted and that I may not give my glory to another.

12 Hearken to me, O Jacob and Israel, whom I called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.

13 My hand has laid the foundations of the earth, and my right hand has stretched out the heavens; when I call to them, they stand up together.

14 Assemble, all of you, and listen; who is there among you who can declare these things? The LORD has loved him, that he may do his will on Babylon and on the land of the Chaldeans.

15 I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have also called him; I have brought him and I have made his way prosperous.

16 Come near to me, listen to this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the creation, there am I; and now the LORD God, and his Spirit, has sent me.

17 Thus says the LORD, your Saviour, the Holy One of Israel: I am the LORD your God who teaches you not to do wrong, who leads you by the way that you should go.

18 O that you had hearkened to my commandments! Then your peace would have been as a river, and your righteousness as the waves of the sea;

19 Your descendants also would have been as the sand, and the offspring of your loins like the gravel thereof; their name would not perish nor be destroyed from before me.

20 Go forth from Babylon, flee from the Chaldeans; with a voice of singing declare this, proclaim it, and publish it even to the ends of the earth; say, The LORD has saved his servant Jacob.

21 They thirsted not when he led them through the deserts; he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them; he bored through the rock, and the waters gushed out.

22 There is no peace to the wicked, says the LORD.
