Exodus

Chapter 18

1 When Jethro,3503 the priest3548 of Midian,4080 Moses'4872 father-in-law,2859 heard8085 853 of all3605 that834 God430 had done6213 for Moses,4872 and for Israel3478 his people,5971 and that3588 the LORD3068 had brought Israel out3318 853 3478 of Egypt;4480 4714

2 Then Jethro,3503 Moses'4872 father-in-law,2859 took3947 853 Zipporah,6855 Moses'4872 wife,802 after310 he had sent her back,7964

3 And her two8147 sons;1121 of which834 the name8034 of the one259 was Gershom;1648 for3588 he said,559 I have been1961 an alien1616 in a strange5237 land: 776

4 And the name8034 of the other259 was Eliezer;461 for3588 the God430 of my father,1 said he, was mine help,5828 and delivered5337 me from the sword4480 2719 of Pharaoh: 6547

5 And Jethro,3503 Moses'4872 father-in-law,2859 came935 with his sons1121 and his wife802 unto413 Moses4872 into413 the wilderness,4057 where834 8033 he1931 encamped2583 at the mount2022 of God: 430

6 And he said559 unto413 Moses,4872 I589 thy father-in-law2859 Jethro3503 am come935 unto413 thee, and thy wife,802 and her two8147 sons1121 with5973 her.

7 And Moses4872 went out3318 to meet7125 his father-in-law,2859 and did obeisance,7812 and kissed5401 him; and they asked7592 each376 other7453 of their welfare;7965 and they came935 into the tent.168

8 And Moses4872 told5608 his father-in-law2859 853 all3605 that834 the LORD3068 had done6213 unto Pharaoh6547 and to the Egyptians4714 for5921 Israel's3478 sake,182 and853 all3605 the travail8513 that834 had come upon4672 them by the way,1870 and how the LORD3068 delivered5337 them.

9 And Jethro3503 rejoiced2302 for5921 all3605 the goodness2896 which834 the LORD3068 had done6213 to Israel,3478 whom834 he had delivered5337 out of the hand4480 3027 of the Egyptians.4714

10 And Jethro3503 said,559 Blessed1288 be the LORD,3068 who834 hath delivered5337 you out of the hand4480 3027 of the Egyptians,4714 and out of the hand4480 3027 of Pharaoh,6547 who834 hath delivered5337 853 the people5971 from under4480 8478 the hand3027 of the Egyptians.4714

11 Now6258 I know3045 that3588 the LORD3068 is greater1419 than all4480 3605 gods:430 for3588 in the thing1697 wherein834 they dealt proudly2102 he was above5921 them.

12 And Jethro,3503 Moses'4872 father-in-law,2859 took3947 a burnt offering5930 and sacrifices2077 for God:430 and Aaron175 came,935 and all3605 the elders2205 of Israel,3478 to eat398 bread3899 with5973 Moses'4872 father-in-law2859 before6440 God.430

13 And it came to pass1961 on the morrow,4480 4283 that Moses4872 sat3427 to judge8199 853 the people:5971 and the people5971 stood5975 by5921 Moses4872 from4480 the morning1242 unto5704 the evening.6153

14 And when Moses'4872 father-in-law2859 saw7200 853 all3605 that834 he1931 did6213 to the people,5971 he said,559 What4100 is this2088 thing1697 that834 thou859 doest6213 to the people?5971 why4069 sittest3427 thou859 thyself alone,905 and all3605 the people5971 stand5324 by5921 thee from4480 morning1242 unto5704 even?6153

15 And Moses4872 said559 unto his father-in-law,2859 Because3588 the people5971 come935 unto413 me to inquire1875 of God: 430

16 When3588 they have1961 a matter,1697 they come935 unto413 me; and I judge8199 between996 one376 and another,7453 and I do make them known3045 853 the statutes2706 of God,430 and his laws.8451

17 And Moses'4872 father-in-law2859 said559 unto413 him, The thing1697 that834 thou859 doest6213 is not3808 good.2896

18 Thou wilt surely wear away,5034 5034 both1571 thou,859 and1571 this2088 people5971 that834 is with5973 thee: for3588 this thing1697 is too heavy3515 for4480 thee; thou art not3808 able3201 to perform6213 it thyself alone.905

19 Hearken8085 now6258 unto my voice,6963 I will give thee counsel,3289 and God430 shall be1961 with5973 thee: Be1961 thou859 for the people5971 to Godward,4136 430 that thou859 mayest bring935 853 the causes1697 unto413 God: 430

20 And thou shalt teach2094 them853 ordinances2706 and laws,8451 and shalt show3045 them853 the way1870 wherein they must walk,1980 and the work4640 that834 they must do.6213

21 Moreover thou859 shalt provide2372 out of all4480 3605 the people5971 able2428 men,376 such as fear3373 God,430 men376 of truth,571 hating8130 covetousness;1215 and place7760 such over5921 them, to be rulers8269 of thousands,505 and rulers8269 of hundreds,3967 rulers8269 of fifties,2572 and rulers8269 of tens: 6235

22 And let them judge8199 853 the people5971 at all3605 seasons:6256 and it shall be,1961 that every3605 great1419 matter1697 they shall bring935 unto413 thee, but every3605 small6996 matter1697 they1992 shall judge:8199 so shall it be easier7043 for4480 5921 thyself, and they shall bear5375 the burden with854 thee.

23 If518 thou shalt do6213 853 this2088 thing,1697 and God430 command6680 thee so, then thou shalt be able3201 to endure,5975 and all3605 this2088 people5971 shall also1571 go935 to5921 their place4725 in peace.7965

24 So Moses4872 hearkened8085 to the voice6963 of his father-in-law,2859 and did6213 all3605 that834 he had said.559

25 And Moses4872 chose977 able2428 men376 out of all4480 3605 Israel,3478 and made5414 them heads7218 over5921 the people,5971 rulers8269 of thousands,505 rulers8269 of hundreds,3967 rulers8269 of fifties,2572 and rulers8269 of tens.6235

26 And they judged8199 853 the people5971 at all3605 seasons:6256 the hard7186 853 causes1697 they brought935 unto413 Moses,4872 but every3605 small6996 matter1697 they judged8199 themselves.1992

27 And Moses4872 let853 his father-in-law2859 depart;7971 and he went his way1980 into413 his own land.776

Exodus

Chapter 18

1 AND Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel his people, and that the LORD had brought the children of Israel out of Egypt;

2 Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took his daughter Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her back,

3 And her two sons; of whom the name of the one was Gershon; for he said, I have been an alien in a foreign land;

4 And the name of the other was Eliezer; For the God of my fathers, said he, was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh;

5 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness, where he encamped at the mountain of God;

6 And Moses was told, Behold, your father-in-law Jethro has come to you with your wife and your two sons accompanying him,

7 And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and did obeisance and kissed him, and they asked each other of their welfare; and they went into the tent.

8 And Moses told his father-in-law all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel's sake, and all the travail that they had suffered on the journey, and how the LORD had delivered them.

9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, because he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh.

10 And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh, for he has delivered his people from under the rule of the Egyptians.

11 Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods; for despite the counsel which the Egyptians had devised against them, he triumphed over them.

12 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, offered burnt offerings and sacrifices to the LORD; and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law before God.

13 And it came to pass the next day that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood by Moses from morning to evening.

14 And when Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did for the people, he said to him, What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit in judgment all alone, and all the people stand by you from morning to evening?

15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to inquire of God;

16 And when they have a controversy, they come to me; and I judge between one and another, and I make them know the statutes of God and his laws.

17 And Moses' father-in-law said to him, The thing that you are doing is not good.

18 You will surely wear yourself out, both you, and all this people that is with you; for this thing is too heavy for you; you are not able to do it alone.

19 Listen now to my voice, I will give you counsel, and God shall be with you; you must become a teacher from God to the people, to bring their disputes before God;

20 And you shall warn them to keep the ordinances and laws that you may show them how to conduct themselves and the works that they must do.

21 Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men who fear God, truthful men who hate bribes and deceit; and appoint such over them to be officers of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.

22 Let them judge the people at all times; and when they have an important matter, let them come to you; but every small matter they shall judge for themselves; so it shall be easier for you, and they shall bear the burden with you.

23 If you shall do this thing, and God commands you so, then you shall be able to endure, and all this people shall also go each one to his own house in peace.

24 So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had told him.

25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and appointed them officers over the people, officers of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.

26 And they judged the people at all times; the hard cases they brought to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

27 Then Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went to his own land.

10 And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh, for he has delivered his people from under the rule of the Egyptians.

12 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, offered burnt offerings and sacrifices to the LORD; and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law before God.

13 And it came to pass1961 on the morrow,4480 4283 that Moses4872 sat3427 to judge8199 853 the people:5971 and the people5971 stood5975 by5921 Moses4872 from4480 the morning1242 unto5704 the evening.6153

13 And it came to pass the next day that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood by Moses from morning to evening.

14 And when Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did for the people, he said to him, What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit in judgment all alone, and all the people stand by you from morning to evening?

15 And Moses4872 said559 unto his father-in-law,2859 Because3588 the people5971 come935 unto413 me to inquire1875 of God: 430

16 And when they have a controversy, they come to me; and I judge between one and another, and I make them know the statutes of God and his laws.

17 And Moses'4872 father-in-law2859 said559 unto413 him, The thing1697 that834 thou859 doest6213 is not3808 good.2896

17 And Moses' father-in-law said to him, The thing that you are doing is not good.

18 You will surely wear yourself out, both you, and all this people that is with you; for this thing is too heavy for you; you are not able to do it alone.

19 Listen now to my voice, I will give you counsel, and God shall be with you; you must become a teacher from God to the people, to bring their disputes before God;

20 And thou shalt teach2094 them853 ordinances2706 and laws,8451 and shalt show3045 them853 the way1870 wherein they must walk,1980 and the work4640 that834 they must do.6213

20 And you shall warn them to keep the ordinances and laws that you may show them how to conduct themselves and the works that they must do.

21 Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men who fear God, truthful men who hate bribes and deceit; and appoint such over them to be officers of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.

22 Let them judge the people at all times; and when they have an important matter, let them come to you; but every small matter they shall judge for themselves; so it shall be easier for you, and they shall bear the burden with you.

23 If518 thou shalt do6213 853 this2088 thing,1697 and God430 command6680 thee so, then thou shalt be able3201 to endure,5975 and all3605 this2088 people5971 shall also1571 go935 to5921 their place4725 in peace.7965

23 If you shall do this thing, and God commands you so, then you shall be able to endure, and all this people shall also go each one to his own house in peace.

24 So Moses4872 hearkened8085 to the voice6963 of his father-in-law,2859 and did6213 all3605 that834 he had said.559

24 So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had told him.

25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and appointed them officers over the people, officers of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.

26 And they judged8199 853 the people5971 at all3605 seasons:6256 the hard7186 853 causes1697 they brought935 unto413 Moses,4872 but every3605 small6996 matter1697 they judged8199 themselves.1992

26 And they judged the people at all times; the hard cases they brought to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

27 And Moses4872 let853 his father-in-law2859 depart;7971 and he went his way1980 into413 his own land.776

27 Then Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went to his own land.
