Exodus

Chapter 18

1 AND Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel his people, and that the LORD had brought the children of Israel out of Egypt;

2 Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took his daughter Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her back,

3 And her two sons; of whom the name of the one was Gershon; for he said, I have been an alien in a foreign land;

4 And the name of the other was Eliezer; For the God of my fathers, said he, was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh;

5 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness, where he encamped at the mountain of God;

6 And Moses was told, Behold, your father-in-law Jethro has come to you with your wife and your two sons accompanying him,

7 And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and did obeisance and kissed him, and they asked each other of their welfare; and they went into the tent.

8 And Moses told his father-in-law all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel's sake, and all the travail that they had suffered on the journey, and how the LORD had delivered them.

9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, because he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh.

10 And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh, for he has delivered his people from under the rule of the Egyptians.

11 Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods; for despite the counsel which the Egyptians had devised against them, he triumphed over them.

12 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, offered burnt offerings and sacrifices to the LORD; and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law before God.

13 And it came to pass the next day that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood by Moses from morning to evening.

14 And when Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did for the people, he said to him, What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit in judgment all alone, and all the people stand by you from morning to evening?

15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to inquire of God;

16 And when they have a controversy, they come to me; and I judge between one and another, and I make them know the statutes of God and his laws.

17 And Moses' father-in-law said to him, The thing that you are doing is not good.

18 You will surely wear yourself out, both you, and all this people that is with you; for this thing is too heavy for you; you are not able to do it alone.

19 Listen now to my voice, I will give you counsel, and God shall be with you; you must become a teacher from God to the people, to bring their disputes before God;

20 And you shall warn them to keep the ordinances and laws that you may show them how to conduct themselves and the works that they must do.

21 Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men who fear God, truthful men who hate bribes and deceit; and appoint such over them to be officers of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.

22 Let them judge the people at all times; and when they have an important matter, let them come to you; but every small matter they shall judge for themselves; so it shall be easier for you, and they shall bear the burden with you.

23 If you shall do this thing, and God commands you so, then you shall be able to endure, and all this people shall also go each one to his own house in peace.

24 So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had told him.

25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and appointed them officers over the people, officers of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.

26 And they judged the people at all times; the hard cases they brought to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

27 Then Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went to his own land.

Kapitel 18

1 Und3548 da Jethro3503, der Priester in Midian4080, Moses4872 Schwiegervater2859, hörete alles, was GOtt430 getan6213 hatte8085 mit Mose4872 und seinem Volk5971 Israel3478, daß der HErr3068 Israel3478 hätte aus3318 Ägypten4714 geführet,

2 nahm3947 er3503 Zipora, Moses4872 Weib802, die er hatte zurückgesandt7964,

3 samt ihren zween Söhnen1121, der eine hieß8034 Gersom; denn er sprach559: Ich bin ein259 Gast1616 worden in fremdem5237 Lande776;

4 und der8034 andere259 Elieser461; denn er sprach: Der GOtt430 meines Vaters1 ist meine Hilfe5828 gewesen und hat mich errettet5337 von dem Schwert2719 Pharaos6547.

5 Da nun Jethro3503, Moses4872 Schwäher, und4872 seine Söhne1121 und sein Weib802 zu ihm2859 kamen935 in die Wüste4057, an den Berg2022 Gottes430, da er sich2583 gelagert hatte,

6 ließ er Mose4872 sagen559: Ich, Jethro3503, dein Schwäher, bin zu dir kommen935, und dein Weib802 und ihre beiden8147 Söhne1121 mit ihr.

7 Da ging3318 ihm2859 Mose4872 entgegen7125 hinaus und neigte sich7812 vor ihm und küssete ihn7965. Und da sie5401 sich untereinander376 gegrüßet hatten, gingen935 sie in die Hütte168.

8 Da erzählete Mose4872 seinem Schwäher alles, was der HErr3068 Pharao6547 und den Ägyptern4714 getan hatte6213 Israels3478 halben182, und alle die Mühe8513, die ihnen auf dem Wege1870 begegnet4672 war5608, und daß sie der HErr3068 errettet hätte5337.

9 Jethro3503 aber freuete sich2302 all des Guten2896, das der HErr3068 Israel3478 getan hatte6213, daß er sie errettet hatte5337 von der Ägypter4714 Hand3027.

10 Und Jethro3503 sprach559: Gelobet sei1288 der HErr3068, der euch errettet hat5337 von3027 der Ägypter4714 und Pharaos6547 Hand3027, der weiß sein Volk5971 von der Ägypter4714 Hand3027 zu erretten5337.

11 Nun weiß3045 ich, daß der HErr3068 größer1419 ist denn alle Götter430, darum1697 daß sie Hochmut an ihnen geübet haben2102.

12 Und Jethro3503, Moses4872 Schwäher, nahm3947 Brandopfer5930 und opferte GOtt430. Da kam935 Aaron175 und alle Ältesten2205 in Israel3478, mit Moses4872 Schwäher das Brot3899 zu essen398 vor6440 GOtt430.

13 Des andern4283 Morgens setzte5975 sich3427 Mose4872, das Volk5971 zu richten8199; und das Volk5971 stund um Mose4872 her von Morgen1242 an bis zu Abend6153.

14 Da aber sein Schwäher sah7200 alles, was er5324 mit dem Volk5971 tat6213, sprach559 er: Was ist, das du tust mit dem Volk5971? Warum sitzest du allein, und4872 alles Volk5971 stehet um1697 dich3427 her von Morgen1242 an bis zu6213 Abend6153?

15 Mose4872 antwortete559 ihm2859: Das Volk5971 kommt935 zu mir und fragen1875 GOtt430 um Rat.

16 Denn wo sie was zu schaffen haben1697, kommen935 sie zu mir, daß ich richte8199 zwischen einem jeglichen376 und seinem Nächsten7453 und zeige3045 ihnen Gottes430 Rechte und seine Gesetze2706.

17 Sein4872 Schwäher sprach559 zu6213 ihm2859: Es ist nicht gut2896, das1697 du tust.

18 Du machest dich zu5034 müde, dazu das1697 Volk5971 auch, das mit dir ist. Das Geschäft ist dir zu schwer3515, du kannst3201 es allein nicht ausrichten.

19 Aber gehorche meiner Stimme6963; ich will935 dir raten3289, und GOtt430 wird mit dir sein1961. Pflege du8085 des Volks5971 vor GOtt430 und bringe die Geschäfte1697 vor GOtt430;

20 und stelle2094 ihnen853 Rechte und Gesetze2706, daß du3045 sie lehrest den Weg1870, darin sie wandeln3212, und die Werke4639, die sie tun6213 sollen.

21 Sieh dich aber um2372 unter allem Volk5971 nach redlichen2428 Leuten582, die GOtt430 fürchten3373, wahrhaftig571 und dem Geiz1215 feind8130 sind; die setze7760 über8269 sie, etliche582 über8269 tausend505, über8269 hundert3967, über8269 fünfzig2572 und über zehn6235,

22 daß sie das1697 Volk5971 allezeit richten8199; wo aber eine große1419 Sache1697 ist935, daß sie dieselbe an dich bringen, und6256 sie alle geringen6996 Sachen richten8199. So wird dir‘s leichter werden7043, und sie mit dir tragen5375.

23 Wirst du das1697 tun6213, so kannst du ausrichten5975, was dir GOtt430 gebeut6680, und all dies Volk5971 kann3201 mit Frieden7965 an seinen Ort4725 kommen935.

24 Mose4872 gehorchte8085 seines Schwähers Wort6963 und tat6213 alles, was er sagte559,

25 und4872 redliche2428 Leute aus dem ganzen Israel3478 und machte5414 sie zu Häuptern7218 über8269 das Volk5971, etliche582 über8269 tausend505, über8269 hundert3967, über8269 fünfzig2572 und über zehn6235

26 daß sie1992 das1697 Volk5971 allezeit richteten8199, was aber schwere7186 Sachen wären, zu Mose4872 brächten935, und6256 die kleinen6996 Sachen sie richteten8199.

27 Also ließ7971 Mose4872 seinen Schwäher in sein Land776 ziehen3212.
