Chapter 11

1 NOW the whole earth spoke one language and with one manner of speech.

2 And it came to pass, as men journeyed from the east, they found a plain in the land of Sinar; and they settled there.

3 And they said one to another, Come, let us make bricks and burn them with fire. And they had bricks for stone, and slime for mortar.

4 Then they said, Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top may reach to heaven; and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which men were building.

6 And the LORD said, Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language; and they have reasoned to do this thing; and now nothing will prevent them from doing that which they have imagined to do.

7 Come, let us go down, and there divide their language so that they may not understand one another's speech.

8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there upon the face of all the earth; and they ceased from building the city.

9 Therefore they called the name of it Babel; because it was there that the LORD confounded the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them upon the face of all the earth.

10 These are the descendants of Shem: Shem was a hundred years old, and begot Arphakhashar, two years after the flood;

11 And Shem lived after he begot Arphakhashar five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

12 And Arphakhashar lived thirty-five years, and begot Shalah;

13 And Arphakhashar lived after he begot Shalah four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.

14 And Shalah lived thirty years, and begot Eber;

15 And Shalah lived after he begot Eber four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.

16 And Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot Peleg:

17 And Eber lived after he begot Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.

18 And Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Rau;

19 And Peleg lived after he begot Rau two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.

20 And Rau lived thirty-two years, and begot Serug;

21 And Rau lived after he begot Serug two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.

22 And Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor;

23 And Serug lived after he begot Nahor two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

24 And Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot Terah;

25 And Nahor lived after he begot Terah one hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.

26 And Terah lived seventy-five years, and begot Abram, manor, and Haran.

27 Now these are the descendants of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot.

28 And Haran died before his father Terah in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans.

29 And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves; the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.

30 But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan: and they came as far as Haran, and they settled there.

32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.

1 Было время, когда весь мир говорил на одном языке, пользовался одними и теми же словами.

2 Идя на восток, люди нашли в стране Шинар равнину и поселились там.

3 Сказали они тогда друг другу: «Будем делать из глины кирпичи и обжигать их в огне». (Так кирпич стал заменой камню, а природный битум — известковому раствору.)

4 «Что ж! Сделаем себе имя, построив город с башней до самого неба, — говорили они, — это удержит нас здесь: не будем мы по всему свету рассеяны».

5 Тогда сошел ГОСПОДЬ на землю — посмотреть на город и башню, что строили люди,

6 и сказал Он: «Если они — народ единый, с одним для всех языком — такое начали делать, воистину ни одно из их намерений не покажется им невыполнимым!

7 Сойдем же к ним и смешаем их язык так, чтобы они не понимали речи друг друга».

8 Так рассеял их ГОСПОДЬ оттуда по всей земле, и строительство города прекратилось.

9 Вот почему этот город и называется Вавилон — там смешал ГОСПОДЬ язык всех жителей земли. С того места Он рассеял людей по всему свету.

10 ПОТОМКИ СИМА. Когда Симу было сто лет, у него родился сын Арпахшад (это произошло через два года после потопа).

11 После рождения Арпахшада Сим жил пятьсот лет, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

12 Арпахшаду было тридцать пять лет, когда у него родился Шелах;

13 после рождения Шелаха Арпахшад прожил четыреста три года, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

14 Шелаху было тридцать лет, когда у него родился Эвер;

15 после рождения Эвера Шелах прожил четыреста три года, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

16 Эверу было тридцать четыре года, когда у него родился Пелег;

17 после рождения Пелега Эвер прожил четыреста тридцать лет, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

18 Пелегу было тридцать лет, когда у него родился Реу;

19 после рождения Реу Пелег прожил двести девять лет, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

20 Реу было тридцать два года, когда у него родился Саруг;

21 после рождения Саруга Реу прожил двести семь лет, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

22 Саругу было тридцать лет, когда у него родился Нахор;

23 после рождения Нахора Саруг прожил двести лет, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

24 Нахору было двадцать девять лет, когда у него родился Терах;

25 после рождения Тераха Нахор прожил сто девятнадцать лет, были у него и другие сыновья и дочери.

26 Терах прожил семьдесят лет, когда у него родились сыновья: Аврам, Нахор и Харан.

27 ПОТОМКИ ТЕРАХА. У Тераха родились сыновья: Аврам, Нахор и Харан. У Харана родился сын по имени Лот.

28 Харан умер на родине, в Уре Халдейском, еще при жизни Тераха, отца своего.

29 Аврам и Нахор женились: жену Аврама звали Сарой, имя жены Нахора Милька, она — дочь Харана, который был и отцом Иски.

30 Сара была бесплодна — не было у нее детей.

31 Терах ушел из Ура Халдейского вместе с сыном своим Аврамом, внуком своим Лотом (сыном Харана) и невесткой своей Сарой, женой сына своего Аврама, чтобы идти в землю ханаанскую. Но они дошли до Харана и поселились там.

32 Терах умер в Харане, когда ему было двести пять лет.

2 And it came to pass, as men journeyed from the east, they found a plain in the land of Sinar; and they settled there.

2 Идя на восток, люди нашли в стране Шинар равнину и поселились там.

3 And they said one to another, Come, let us make bricks and burn them with fire. And they had bricks for stone, and slime for mortar.

4 Then they said, Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top may reach to heaven; and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

4 «Что ж! Сделаем себе имя, построив город с башней до самого неба, — говорили они, — это удержит нас здесь: не будем мы по всему свету рассеяны».

5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which men were building.

5 Тогда сошел ГОСПОДЬ на землю — посмотреть на город и башню, что строили люди,

6 And the LORD said, Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language; and they have reasoned to do this thing; and now nothing will prevent them from doing that which they have imagined to do.

6 и сказал Он: «Если они — народ единый, с одним для всех языком — такое начали делать, воистину ни одно из их намерений не покажется им невыполнимым!

7 Come, let us go down, and there divide their language so that they may not understand one another's speech.

16 And Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot Peleg:

17 And Eber lived after he begot Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.

18 And Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Rau;

19 And Peleg lived after he begot Rau two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.

20 And Rau lived thirty-two years, and begot Serug;

26 And Terah lived seventy-five years, and begot Abram, manor, and Haran.

26 Терах прожил семьдесят лет, когда у него родились сыновья: Аврам, Нахор и Харан.

27 Now these are the descendants of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot.

27 ПОТОМКИ ТЕРАХА. У Тераха родились сыновья: Аврам, Нахор и Харан. У Харана родился сын по имени Лот.

28 And Haran died before his father Terah in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans.

28 Харан умер на родине, в Уре Халдейском, еще при жизни Тераха, отца своего.

29 And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves; the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.

31 Терах ушел из Ура Халдейского вместе с сыном своим Аврамом, внуком своим Лотом (сыном Харана) и невесткой своей Сарой, женой сына своего Аврама, чтобы идти в землю ханаанскую. Но они дошли до Харана и поселились там.

32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.

32 Терах умер в Харане, когда ему было двести пять лет.
