Chapter 21

1 And the LORD3068 visited6485 Sarah8283 as he had said,559 and the LORD3068 did6213 to Sarah8283 as he had spoken.1696

2 For Sarah8283 conceived,2029 and bore3205 Abraham85 a son1121 in his old2208 age, at the set4150 time of which834 God430 had spoken1696 to him.

3 And Abraham85 called7121 the name8034 of his son1121 that was born3205 to him, whom834 Sarah8283 bore3205 to him, Isaac.3327

4 And Abraham85 circumcised4135 his son1121 Isaac3327 being eight8083 days3117 old,1121 as God430 had commanded6680 him.

5 And Abraham85 was an hundred3967 years8141 old,1121 when his son1121 Isaac3327 was born3205 to him.

6 And Sarah8283 said,559 God430 has made me to laugh,6712 so that all3605 that hear8085 will laugh6711 with me.

7 And she said,4448 Who4310 would have said4448 to Abraham,85 that Sarah8283 should have given children1121 suck?3243 for I have born3205 him a son1121 in his old2208 age.

8 And the child3206 grew,1431 and was weaned:1580 and Abraham85 made6213 a great1419 feast4960 the same day3117 that Isaac3327 was weaned.1580

9 And Sarah8283 saw7200 the son1121 of Hagar1904 the Egyptian,4713 which834 she had born3205 to Abraham,85 mocking.6711

10 Why she said559 to Abraham,85 Cast1644 out this2063 female slave519 and her son:1121 for the son1121 of this2063 female slave519 shall not be heir3423 with my son, even with Isaac.3327

11 And the thing1697 was very3966 grievous7489 in Abraham's85 sight5869 because2921 182 of his son.1121

12 And God430 said559 to Abraham,85 Let it not be grievous7489 in your sight5869 because5921 of the lad,5288 and because5921 of your female slave;519 in all3605 that Sarah8283 has said559 to you, listen8085 to her voice;6963 for in Isaac3327 shall your seed2233 be called.7121

13 And also of the son1121 of the female slave519 will I make7760 a nation,1471 because3588 he is your seed.2233

14 And Abraham85 rose7925 up early7925 in the morning,1242 and took3947 bread,3899 and a bottle2573 of water,4325 and gave5414 it to Hagar,1904 putting7760 it on5921 her shoulder,7926 and the child,3206 and sent7971 her away: and she departed,3212 and wandered8582 in the wilderness4057 of Beersheba.884

15 And the water4325 was spent3615 in the bottle,2573 and she cast7993 the child3206 under8478 one259 of the shrubs.7880

16 And she went,3212 and sat3427 her down over5048 against5048 him a good7368 way off, as it were a bow shot:2909 7198 for she said,559 Let me not see7200 the death4194 of the child.3206 And she sat3427 over5048 against5048 him, and lift5375 up her voice,6963 and wept.1058

17 And God430 heard8085 the voice6963 of the lad;5288 and the angel4397 of God430 called7121 to Hagar1904 out of heaven,8064 and said559 to her, What4100 ails you, Hagar?1904 fear3372 not; for God430 has heard8085 the voice6963 of the lad5288 where834 he is.

18 Arise,6965 lift5375 up the lad,5288 and hold2388 him in your hand;3027 for I will make7760 him a great1419 nation.1471

19 And God430 opened6491 her eyes,5869 and she saw7200 a well875 of water;4325 and she went,3212 and filled4390 the bottle2573 with water,4325 and gave the lad5288 drink.8248

20 And God430 was with the lad;5288 and he grew,1431 and dwelled3427 in the wilderness,4057 and became1961 an archer.7198

21 And he dwelled3427 in the wilderness4057 of Paran:6290 and his mother517 took3947 him a wife802 out of the land776 of Egypt.4714

22 And it came1961 to pass at that time,6256 that Abimelech40 and Phichol6369 the chief captain8269 of his host6635 spoke559 to Abraham,85 saying,559 God430 is with you in all3605 that you do:6213

23 Now6258 therefore swear7650 to me here2008 by God430 that you will not deal falsely8266 with me, nor with my son,5220 nor with my son's5220 son:5220 but according to the kindness2617 that I have done6213 to you, you shall do6213 to me, and to the land776 wherein834 you have sojourned.1481

24 And Abraham85 said,559 I will swear.7650

25 And Abraham85 reproved3198 Abimelech40 because5921 182 of a well875 of water,4325 which834 Abimelech's40 servants5650 had violently1497 taken1497 away.

26 And Abimelech40 said,559 I know3045 not who4310 has done6213 this2088 thing;1697 neither3808 did you tell5046 me, neither3808 yet1571 heard8085 I of it, but to day.3117

27 And Abraham85 took3947 sheep6629 and oxen,1241 and gave5414 them to Abimelech;40 and both8147 of them made3772 a covenant.1285

28 And Abraham85 set5324 seven7651 ewe3535 lambs3535 of the flock6629 by themselves.

29 And Abimelech40 said559 to Abraham,85 What4100 mean these seven7651 ewe3535 lambs3535 which834 you have set5324 by themselves?

30 And he said,559 For these seven7651 ewe3535 lambs3535 shall you take3947 of my hand,3027 that they may be a witness5713 to me, that I have dig2658 this well.875

31 Why5921 3651 he called7121 that place4725 Beersheba;884 because3588 there8033 they swore7650 both8147 of them.

32 Thus they made3772 a covenant1285 at Beersheba:884 then Abimelech40 rose6965 up, and Phichol6369 the chief captain8269 of his host,6635 and they returned7725 into413 the land776 of the Philistines.6430

33 And Abraham85 planted5193 a grove815 in Beersheba,884 and called7121 there8033 on the name8034 of the LORD,3068 the everlasting5769 God.410

34 And Abraham85 sojourned1481 in the Philistines' 6430land776 many7227 days.3117

Chapter 21

1 AND the LORD remembered Sarah, as he had said, and the LORD did to Sarah as he had spoken.

2 For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

3 And Abraham called the name of his son that was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac.

4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.

5 And Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

6 And Sarah said, God has made me to rejoice today exceedingly; everyone that hears the news will rejoice with me.

7 And she said, Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would give suck to children? For I have borne him a son in his old age.

8 And the child grew and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.

9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar, the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking.

10 Therefore she said to Abraham, Expel this maidservant and her son; for the son of this maidservant shall not be heir with my son Isaac.

11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son.

12 And God said to Abraham, Let it not be grievous in your sight because of the boy and because of your maidservant; whatever Sarah tells you, hearken to her voice; for your descendants shall come through Isaac.

13 And also of the son of the maidservant will I make a great nation because he is your offspring.

14 And Abraham rose up early in the morning and took bread and a skin containing water and gave them to Hagar, putting them on her shoulder, and the boy; and sent her away. And she departed, and lost her way in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.

15 And the water in the skin was spent, and she cast the boy under one of the shrubs.

16 And she went and sat down opposite him about the distance of a bowshot; for she said, Let me not see the death of the boy. And she sat down opposite him and lifted up her voice and wept.

17 And the LORD heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.

18 Arise, take up the boy, and hold him fast in your arms; for I will make him a great nation.

19 Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water; and she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.

20 And God was with the boy; and he grew up and dwelt in the wilderness of Paran and learned to become an archer in the wilderness of Paran.

21 And his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.

22 And it came to pass at that time that Abimeleck and Phichol, the general of his army, said to Abraham, God is with you in all that you do;

23 Now therefore swear to me by God in this place that you will never deal falsely with me, nor with my family, nor with my descendants; but according to the kindness that I have done to you, you shall do to me and to the land wherein you have sojourned.

24 And Abraham said, I will swear.

25 And Abraham reproved Abimeleck because of a well which Abraham's servants had dug and which Abimeleck's servants had seized.

26 And Abimeleck said, I do not know who has done this thing; neither did you tell me, nor have I heard of it until today.

27 And Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimeleck; and both of them made a covenant.

28 And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.

29 And Abimeleck said to Abraham, What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs of the flock which you have set by themselves?

30 And he said, For these seven ewe lambs you shall take of my hands that they may be a witness for me that I have digged this well.

31 Therefore he called that place Beer-sheba, because there they swore both of them.

32 Thus they made a covenant at Beer-sheba; then Abimeleck and Phichol, the general of the army, rose up and returned to the land of the Philistines.

33 And Abraham planted a grove in Beer-sheba and called there on the name of the LORD Everlasting.

34 And Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines for a long time.
