Chapter 5

1 And seeing1492 the multitudes,3793 he went305 up into1519 a mountain:3735 and when he was set,2523 his disciples3101 came4334 to him:

2 And he opened455 his mouth,4750 and taught1321 them, saying,3004

3 Blessed3107 are the poor4434 in spirit:4151 for theirs846 is the kingdom932 of heaven.3772

4 Blessed3107 are they that mourn:3996 for they shall be comforted.3870

5 Blessed3107 are the meek:4239 for they shall inherit2816 the earth.1093

6 Blessed3107 are they which3588 do hunger3983 and thirst1372 after righteousness:1343 for they shall be filled.5526

7 Blessed3107 are the merciful:1655 for they shall obtain1653 mercy.1653

8 Blessed3107 are the pure2513 in heart:2588 for they shall see3700 God.2316

9 Blessed3107 are the peacemakers:1518 for they shall be called2564 the children5207 of God.2316

10 Blessed3107 are they which are persecuted1377 for righteousness'1343 sake:1752 for theirs846 is the kingdom932 of heaven.3772

11 Blessed3107 are you, when3752 men shall revile3679 you, and persecute1377 you, and shall say2036 all3956 manner of evil4190 4487 against2596 you falsely,5574 for my sake.1752

12 Rejoice,5463 and be exceeding glad:21 for great4183 is your5216 reward3408 in heaven:3772 for so3779 persecuted1377 they the prophets4396 which3588 were before4253 you.

13 You are the salt217 of the earth:1093 but if1437 the salt217 have lost3471 his flavor,3471 with which1722 5101 shall it be salted?233 it is thereafter2089 good2480 for nothing,3762 but to be cast906 out, and to be trodden2662 under2662 foot2662 of men.444

14 You are the light5457 of the world.2889 A city4172 that is set2749 on1883 an hill3735 cannot3756 1410 be hid.2928

15 Neither3761 do men light2545 a candle,3088 and put5087 it under5259 a bushel,3426 but on1909 a candlestick;3087 and it gives light2989 to all3956 that are in the house.3614

16 Let your5216 light5457 so3779 shine2989 before1715 men,444 that they may see1492 your5216 good2570 works,2041 and glorify1392 your5216 Father3962 which3588 is in heaven.3772

17 Think3543 not that I am come2064 to destroy2647 the law,3551 or2228 the prophets:4396 I am not come2064 to destroy,2647 but to fulfill.4137

18 For truly281 I say3004 to you, Till2193 heaven3772 and earth1093 pass,3928 one1520 stroke2503 or2228 one3391 pronunciation mark2762 shall in no3364 wise pass3928 from the law,3551 till2193 all3956 be fulfilled.1096

19 Whoever3739 1437 therefore3767 shall break3089 one3391 of these5130 least1646 commandments,1785 and shall teach1321 men444 so,3779 he shall be called2564 the least1646 in the kingdom932 of heaven:3772 but whoever3739 302 shall do4160 and teach1321 them, the same3778 shall be called2564 great3173 in the kingdom932 of heaven.3772

20 For I say3004 to you, That except3362 your5216 righteousness1343 shall exceed4052 the righteousness1343 of the scribes1122 and Pharisees,5330 you shall in no3364 case3364 enter1525 into1519 the kingdom932 of heaven.3772

21 You have heard191 that it was said2046 of them of old744 time,744 You shall not kill;5407 and whoever3739 302 shall kill5407 shall be in danger1777 of the judgment:2920

22 But I say3004 to you, That whoever3956 3588 is angry3710 with his brother80 without1500 a cause1500 shall be in danger1777 of the judgment:2920 and whoever3739 302 shall say2036 to his brother,80 Raca,4469 shall be in danger1777 of the council:4892 but whoever3739 302 shall say,2036 You fool,3474 shall be in danger1777 of hell1067 fire.4442

23 Therefore3767 if you bring4374 your gift1435 to the altar,2379 and there1563 remember3415 that your brother80 has2192 ought5100 against2596 you;

24 Leave863 there1563 your gift1435 before1715 the altar,2379 and go5217 your way; first4412 be reconciled1259 to your brother,80 and then5119 come2064 and offer4374 your gift.1435

25 Agree2132 with your4675 adversary476 quickly,5035 whiles2193 3755 you are1488 in the way3598 with him; lest3379 at3379 any3379 time3379 the adversary476 deliver3860 you to the judge,2923 and the judge2923 deliver3860 you to the officer,5257 and you be cast906 into1519 prison.5438

26 Truly281 I say3004 to you, You shall by no3364 means3364 come1831 out there,1564 till2193 you have paid591 the uttermost2078 farthing.2835

27 You have heard191 that it was said2046 by them of old744 time,744 You shall not commit3431 adultery:3431

28 But I say3004 to you, That whoever3956 3588 looks991 on a woman1135 to lust1937 after her has committed3431 adultery3431 with her already2235 in his heart.2588

29 And if1487 your right1188 eye3788 offend4624 you, pluck1808 it out, and cast906 it from you: for it is profitable4851 for you that one1520 of your members3196 should perish,622 and not that your whole3650 body4983 should be cast906 into1519 hell.1067

30 And if your right1188 hand5495 offend4624 you, cut1581 it off,1581 and cast906 it from you: for it is profitable4851 for you that one1520 of your members3196 should perish,622 and not that your whole3650 body4983 should be cast906 into1519 hell.1067

31 It has been said,2046 Whoever3739 302 shall put630 away630 his wife,1135 let him give1325 her a writing of divorce:647

32 But I say3004 to you, That whoever3739 302 shall put630 away630 his wife,1135 saving3924 for the cause3056 of fornication,4202 causes4160 her to commit3429 adultery:3429 and whoever3739 1437 shall marry1060 her that is divorced630 commits3429 adultery.3429

33 Again,3825 you have heard191 that it has been said2046 by them of old744 time,744 You shall not forswear1964 yourself, but shall perform591 to the Lord2962 your4675 oaths:3727

34 But I say3004 to you, Swear3660 not at2527 all;3654 neither3383 by heaven;3772 for it is God's2316 throne:2362

35 Nor3383 by the earth;1093 for it is his footstool:5286 4228 neither3383 by Jerusalem;2414 for it is the city4172 of the great3173 King.935

36 Neither3383 shall you swear3660 by your head,2776 because3754 you can1410 not make4160 one3391 hair2359 white3022 or2228 black.3189

37 But let your5216 communication3056 be, Yes,3483 yes;3483 No,3756 no:3756 for whatever3588 is more4053 than these5130 comes1511 of evil.4190

38 You have heard191 that it has been said,2046 An eye3788 for an eye,3788 and a tooth3599 for a tooth:3599

39 But I say3004 to you, That you resist436 not evil:4190 but whoever3748 shall smite4474 you on1909 your right1188 cheek,4600 turn4762 to him the other243 also.2532

40 And if any man will2309 sue2919 you at2919 the law, and take2983 away your coat,5509 let him have your cloak2440 also.2532

41 And whoever3748 shall compel29 you to go a mile,3400 go5217 with him two.1417

42 Give1325 to him that asks154 you, and from him that would2309 borrow1155 of you turn654 not you away.654

43 You have heard191 that it has been said,2046 You shall love25 your neighbor,4139 and hate3404 your4675 enemy.2190

44 But I say3004 to you, Love25 your5216 enemies,2190 bless2127 them that curse2672 you, do4160 good2573 to them that hate3404 you, and pray4336 for them which3588 spitefully1908 use1908 you, and persecute1377 you;

45 That you may be the children5207 of your5216 Father3962 which3588 is in heaven:3772 for he makes393 his sun2246 to rise393 on1909 the evil4190 and on the good,18 and sends1026 rain1026 on1909 the just1342 and on the unjust.94

46 For if1437 you love25 them which3588 love25 you, what5101 reward3408 have2192 you? do4160 not even2532 the publicans5057 the same?846

47 And if1437 you salute782 your5216 brothers80 only,3440 what5101 do4160 you more4053 than others? do4160 not even2532 the publicans5057 so?3779

48 Be you therefore3767 perfect,5046 even5618 as your5216 Father3962 which3588 is in heaven3772 is perfect.5046

Matthew

Chapter 5

1 WHEN Jesus saw the crowds, he went up to the mountain; and as he sat down, his disciples drew near to him.

2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, and he said,

3 Blessed are the poor in pride, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be well satisfied.

7 Blessed are the merciful, for to them shall be mercy.

8 Blessed are those who are pure in their hearts, for they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of justice, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are you, when they reproach you and persecute you, and speak against you every kind of bad word, falsely, for my sake,

12 Then be glad and rejoice, for your reward is increased in heaven; for in this very manner they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

13 You are indeed the salt of the earth; but if the salt should lose its savor, with what could it be salted? It would not be worth anything, but to be thrown outside and to be trodden down by men.

14 You are indeed the light of the world; a city that is built upon a mountain cannot be hidden.

15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp holder, so it gives light to all who are in the house.

16 Let your light thus shine before men, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

17 Do not expect that I have come to weaken the law or the prophets; I have not come to weaken, but to fulfil.

18 For truly I tell you, Until heaven and earth pass away, not even one yoth * or a dash shall pass away from the law until all of it is fulfilled.

19 Whoever therefore tries to weaken even one of these smallest commandments, and teaches men so, he shall be regarded as small in the kingdom of heaven; but anyone who observes and teaches them, he shall be regarded as great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.

21 You have heard that it was said to those who were before you, You shall not kill, and whoever kills is guilty before the court.

22 But I say to you, that whoever becomes angry with his brother for no reason, is guilty before the court: and whoever should say to his brother, Raca (which means, I spit on you) is guilty before the congregation; and whoever says to his brother, you are a nurse maid, is condemned to hell fire.

23 If it should happen therefore that while you are presenting your offering upon the altar, and right there you remember that your brother has any grievance against you,

24 Leave your offering there upon the altar, and first go and make peace with your brother, and then come back and present your offering.

25 Try to get reconciled with your accuser promptly, while you are going on the road with him; for your accuser might surrender you to the judge, and the judge would commit you to the jailer, and you will be cast into prison.

26 Truly I say to you, that you would never come out thence until you had paid the last cent.

27 You have heard that it is said, You shall not commit adultery.

28 But I say to you, that whoever looks at a woman with the desire to covet her, has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

29 If your right eye should cause you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you; for it is better for you to lose one of your members, and not all your body fall into hell.

30 And if your right hand should cause you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away from you; for it is better for you to lose one of your members, and not all your body fall into hell.

31 It has been said that whoever divorces his wife, must give her the divorce papers.

32 But I say to you, that whoever divorces his wife, except for fornication, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is separated but not divorced, commits adultery.

33 Again you have heard it was said to them who were before you, that you shall not lie in your oaths, but entrust your oaths to the Lord.

34 But I say to you, never swear; neither by heaven, because it is God's throne;

35 Nor by the earth, for it is a stool under his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of a great king.

36 Neither shall you swear by your own head, because you cannot create in it a single black or white hair.

37 But let your words be yes, yes, and no, no; for anything which adds to these is a deception.

38 You have heard that it is said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.

39 But I say to you, that you should not resist evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.

40 And if anyone wishes to sue you at the court and take away your shirt, let him have your robe also.

41 Whoever compels you to carry a burden for a mile, go with him two.

42 Whoever asks from you, give him; and whoever wishes to borrow from you, do not refuse him.

43 You have heard that it is said, Be kind to your friend, and hate your enemy.

44 But I say to you, Love your enemies, and bless anyone who curses you, and do good to anyone who hates you, and pray for them who carry you away by force and persecute you,

45 So that you may become sons of your Father who is in heaven, who causes his sun to shine upon the good and upon the bad, and who pours down his rain upon the just and upon the unjust.

46 For if you love only those who love you, what reward will you have? Do not even the publicans do the same thing?

47 And if you salute only your brothers, what is it more that you do? Do not even the publicans do the same thing?

48 Therefore, you become perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

16 Let your light thus shine before men, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

17 Think3543 not that I am come2064 to destroy2647 the law,3551 or2228 the prophets:4396 I am not come2064 to destroy,2647 but to fulfill.4137

18 For truly I tell you, Until heaven and earth pass away, not even one yoth * or a dash shall pass away from the law until all of it is fulfilled.

20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.

21 You have heard191 that it was said2046 of them of old744 time,744 You shall not kill;5407 and whoever3739 302 shall kill5407 shall be in danger1777 of the judgment:2920

21 You have heard that it was said to those who were before you, You shall not kill, and whoever kills is guilty before the court.

23 Therefore3767 if you bring4374 your gift1435 to the altar,2379 and there1563 remember3415 that your brother80 has2192 ought5100 against2596 you;

27 You have heard191 that it was said2046 by them of old744 time,744 You shall not commit3431 adultery:3431

27 You have heard that it is said, You shall not commit adultery.

28 But I say3004 to you, That whoever3956 3588 looks991 on a woman1135 to lust1937 after her has committed3431 adultery3431 with her already2235 in his heart.2588

28 But I say to you, that whoever looks at a woman with the desire to covet her, has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

29 And if1487 your right1188 eye3788 offend4624 you, pluck1808 it out, and cast906 it from you: for it is profitable4851 for you that one1520 of your members3196 should perish,622 and not that your whole3650 body4983 should be cast906 into1519 hell.1067

30 And if your right hand should cause you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away from you; for it is better for you to lose one of your members, and not all your body fall into hell.

31 It has been said,2046 Whoever3739 302 shall put630 away630 his wife,1135 let him give1325 her a writing of divorce:647

31 It has been said that whoever divorces his wife, must give her the divorce papers.

32 But I say to you, that whoever divorces his wife, except for fornication, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is separated but not divorced, commits adultery.

33 Again,3825 you have heard191 that it has been said2046 by them of old744 time,744 You shall not forswear1964 yourself, but shall perform591 to the Lord2962 your4675 oaths:3727

33 Again you have heard it was said to them who were before you, that you shall not lie in your oaths, but entrust your oaths to the Lord.

34 But I say3004 to you, Swear3660 not at2527 all;3654 neither3383 by heaven;3772 for it is God's2316 throne:2362

34 But I say to you, never swear; neither by heaven, because it is God's throne;

35 Nor3383 by the earth;1093 for it is his footstool:5286 4228 neither3383 by Jerusalem;2414 for it is the city4172 of the great3173 King.935

35 Nor by the earth, for it is a stool under his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of a great king.

36 Neither3383 shall you swear3660 by your head,2776 because3754 you can1410 not make4160 one3391 hair2359 white3022 or2228 black.3189

36 Neither shall you swear by your own head, because you cannot create in it a single black or white hair.

37 But let your5216 communication3056 be, Yes,3483 yes;3483 No,3756 no:3756 for whatever3588 is more4053 than these5130 comes1511 of evil.4190

37 But let your words be yes, yes, and no, no; for anything which adds to these is a deception.

38 You have heard191 that it has been said,2046 An eye3788 for an eye,3788 and a tooth3599 for a tooth:3599

38 You have heard that it is said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.

39 But I say3004 to you, That you resist436 not evil:4190 but whoever3748 shall smite4474 you on1909 your right1188 cheek,4600 turn4762 to him the other243 also.2532

39 But I say to you, that you should not resist evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.

40 And if any man will2309 sue2919 you at2919 the law, and take2983 away your coat,5509 let him have your cloak2440 also.2532

40 And if anyone wishes to sue you at the court and take away your shirt, let him have your robe also.

41 And whoever3748 shall compel29 you to go a mile,3400 go5217 with him two.1417

41 Whoever compels you to carry a burden for a mile, go with him two.

42 Give1325 to him that asks154 you, and from him that would2309 borrow1155 of you turn654 not you away.654

42 Whoever asks from you, give him; and whoever wishes to borrow from you, do not refuse him.

43 You have heard191 that it has been said,2046 You shall love25 your neighbor,4139 and hate3404 your4675 enemy.2190

43 You have heard that it is said, Be kind to your friend, and hate your enemy.

44 But I say3004 to you, Love25 your5216 enemies,2190 bless2127 them that curse2672 you, do4160 good2573 to them that hate3404 you, and pray4336 for them which3588 spitefully1908 use1908 you, and persecute1377 you;

44 But I say to you, Love your enemies, and bless anyone who curses you, and do good to anyone who hates you, and pray for them who carry you away by force and persecute you,

45 That you may be the children5207 of your5216 Father3962 which3588 is in heaven:3772 for he makes393 his sun2246 to rise393 on1909 the evil4190 and on the good,18 and sends1026 rain1026 on1909 the just1342 and on the unjust.94

45 So that you may become sons of your Father who is in heaven, who causes his sun to shine upon the good and upon the bad, and who pours down his rain upon the just and upon the unjust.

46 For if1437 you love25 them which3588 love25 you, what5101 reward3408 have2192 you? do4160 not even2532 the publicans5057 the same?846

46 For if you love only those who love you, what reward will you have? Do not even the publicans do the same thing?

47 And if1437 you salute782 your5216 brothers80 only,3440 what5101 do4160 you more4053 than others? do4160 not even2532 the publicans5057 so?3779

47 And if you salute only your brothers, what is it more that you do? Do not even the publicans do the same thing?

48 Be you therefore3767 perfect,5046 even5618 as your5216 Father3962 which3588 is in heaven3772 is perfect.5046

48 Therefore, you become perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
