Galatians

Chapter 4

1 NOW this I say, That the heir as long as he is young, cannot be distinguished from the servants, though he is the lord of them all.

2 But he is under guardians and stewards, until the time appointed by his father.

3 Even so we, when we were young, were subject to the principles of this world:

4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son who, born of a woman, became subject to the law,

5 To redeem them who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts crying, Abba, Avon,ö O Father, our Father.

7 From now on you are not servants but sons; and if sons, then heirs of God through Jesus Christ.

8 Howbeit then, when you did not know God, you served those things which from their nature were not gods.

9 But now after you have known God, and, above all, are known of God, you turn again to those weak and poor principles, and you wish again to come under their bondage.

10 You still observe days and months and times and years.

11 I am afraid that perhaps I have labored among you in vain.

12 My brethren, I beseech you, put yourself in my place; just as once I put myself in your place: You have not offended me at all.

13 You know that I was sick and weak when I preached the gospel to you at the first.

14 And yet you did not despise me, nor reject me on account of my weakness; but you received me as an angel of God, even as Jesus Christ.

15 Where is then the blessedness you had? for I can testify concerning you, that if it had been possible, you would have plucked out your own eyes and have given them to me.

16 Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

17 These men do not envy you for good, but they would dominate you, so that you might envy them.

18 But it is good that you should always envy after good things, and not only when I am present with you.

19 My little children, for whom I am in travail again, until Christ be a reality in you,

20 I wish I could be with you now, and could change the tone of my voice; because I am deeply concerned about you.

21 Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law?

22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by a bondmaid, and one by a freewoman.

23 But he who was born of the bondmaid was born after the flesh; but he who was born of the freewoman was born by promise.

24 Now these things are a symbol of the two covenants; the one from Mount Sinai, give girls birth to bondage, which is Hagar.

25 For this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and surrenders to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

26 But the Jerusalem which is above is free, and is the mother of us all.

27 For as it is written, Make merry, O you barren who bear not; rejoice and cry, O you who travail not; for the children of the forsaken are more numerous than the children of the one who is favored.

28 Now we, my brethren, are the children of promise, as was Isaac.

29 But as then he who was born after the flesh persecuted him who was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

30 Nevertheless what does the scripture say? Cast out the bondmaid and her son; for the son of the maidservant shall not inherit with the son of the freewoman.

31 So then, my brethren, we are not children of the maidservant but children of the freewoman.

Chapter 4

1 Now2236 I say,3004 That the heir,2818 as long5550 as he is a child,3516 differs1308 nothing3762 from a servant,1401 though he be lord2962 of all;3956

2 But is under5259 tutors2012 and governors3623 until891 the time4287 appointed4287 of the father.3962

3 Even2532 so3779 we, when3753 we were children,3516 were in bondage1402 under5259 the elements4747 of the world:2889

4 But when3753 the fullness4138 of the time5550 was come,2064 God2316 sent1821 forth1821 his Son,5207 made1096 of a woman,1135 made1096 under5259 the law,3551

5 To redeem1805 them that were under5259 the law,3551 that we might receive618 the adoption5206 of sons.5206

6 And because3754 you are sons,5207 God2316 has sent1821 forth1821 the Spirit4151 of his Son5207 into1519 your5216 hearts,2588 crying,2896 Abba,5 Father.3962

7 Why5620 you are1488 no3765 more2089 a servant,1401 but a son;5207 and if1487 a son,5207 then2532 an heir2818 of God2316 through1223 Christ.5547

8 However,235 then,5119 when you knew1492 not God,2316 you did service1398 to them which by nature5449 are no3361 gods.2316

9 But now,3568 after that you have known1097 God,2316 or1161 rather3123 are known1097 of God,2316 how4459 turn1994 you again3825 to the weak772 and beggarly4434 elements,4747 whereunto3739 you desire2309 again3825 509 to be in bondage?1398

10 You observe3906 days,2250 and months,3376 and times,2540 and years.1763

11 I am afraid5399 of you, lest3381 I have bestowed2872 on you labor2872 in vain.1500

12 Brothers,80 I beseech1189 you, be as I am; for I am as you are: you have not injured91 me at3762 all.3762

13 You know1492 how3754 through1223 infirmity769 of the flesh4561 I preached2097 the gospel2097 to you at the first.4386

14 And my temptation3986 which was in my flesh4561 you despised1848 not, nor3761 rejected;1609 but received1209 me as an angel32 of God,2316 even as Christ5547 Jesus.2424

15 Where5101 is then3767 the blessedness3108 you spoke of? for I bear3140 you record,3140 that, if1487 it had been possible,1415 you would have plucked1846 out your5216 own eyes,3788 and have given1325 them to me.

16 Am I therefore5620 become1096 your5216 enemy,2190 because I tell226 you the truth?226

17 They zealously2206 affect2206 you, but not well;2573 yes,235 they would2309 exclude1576 you, that you might affect2206 them.

18 But it is good2570 to be zealously2206 affected2206 always3842 in a good2570 thing, and not only3440 when1722 3588 I am present3918 with you.

19 My little5040 children,5040 of whom3739 I travail5605 in birth5605 again3825 until891 Christ5547 be formed3445 in you,

20 I desire2309 to be present3918 with you now,737 and to change236 my voice;5456 for I stand639 in doubt639 of you.

21 Tell3004 me, you that desire2309 to be under5259 the law,3551 do you not hear191 the law?3551

22 For it is written,1125 that Abraham11 had2192 two1417 sons,5207 the one1520 by a female slave,3814 the other1520 by a free woman.1658

23 But he who was of the female slave3814 was born1080 after2596 the flesh;4561 but he of the free woman1658 was by promise.1860

24 Which3748 things are an allegory:238 for these3778 are the two1417 covenants;1242 the one3391 from the mount3735 Sinai,4614 which engenders1080 to bondage,1397 which3748 is Agar.28

25 For this3588 Agar28 is mount3735 Sinai4614 in Arabia,688 and answers4960 to Jerusalem2419 which3588 now3568 is, and is in bondage1398 with her children.5043

26 But Jerusalem2419 which is above507 is free,1658 which3748 is the mother3384 of us all.3956

27 For it is written,1125 Rejoice,2165 you barren4723 that bore5088 not; break4486 forth4486 and cry,994 you that travail5605 not: for the desolate2048 has many4183 more3123 children5043 than2228 she which has2192 an husband.435

28 Now1161 we, brothers,80 as Isaac2464 was, are the children5043 of promise.1860

29 But as then5119 he that was born1080 after2596 the flesh4561 persecuted1377 him that was born after2596 the Spirit,4151 even2532 so3779 it is now.3568

30 Nevertheless235 what5101 said3004 the scripture?1124 Cast1544 out the female slave3814 and her son:5207 for the son5207 of the female slave3814 shall not be heir2816 with the son5207 of the free woman.1658

31 So686 then,686 brothers,80 we are not children5043 of the female slave,3814 but of the free.1658
