Hosea

Chapter 13

1 WHEN Ephraim spoke, the people trembled; he became great in Israel; but when he was found guilty of Baal worship, he lost his power.

2 And even now they sin more and more, and have made to themselves molten images of their silver, and idols in their own likeness, the work of a carpenter; they said to the people, Let those men who sacrifice men kiss the image of the calf.

3 Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud and as the early dew that passes away, as the chaff that is driven with the wind out of the threshing floor and as the smoke out of the chimney.

4 Yet I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and you shall know no God but me; therefore there is no one who can save besides me.

5 It was I who fed you in the wilderness, in a desolate land which is uninhabited.

6 I fed them, and they were filled; and their heart was exalted; therefore they have forgotten me.

7 Hence I will be to them like a lion; like a leopard by the way of Assyria.

8 I will meet them like a bear that tears its prey in pieces, and I will pierce the crust of their heart; and there a lion shall devour them; the wild beast shall tear them.

9 O Israel, you have corrupted yourself; who can help you?

10 Where now is your king? Let him save you, and all your cities? And your judge of whom you said, Give me a king and a prince?

11 I gave you a king in my anger, and took him away in my wrath.

12 The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is hid.

13 The pangs like those of a woman in travail shall come upon him because he is an unwise son; for now he shall not be in pain of childbirth.

14 I will save them from the power of Sheol; I will deliver them from death, O death, where is your victory? O Sheol, where is your sting? Consolation is hidden from my eyes.

15 Because he shall be separated from his brothers, an east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD shall blow from the wilderness and dry up his fountains, and his springs shall be dried up; it shall spoil the treasure of all valuable vessels.

16 Samaria shall be condemned because she has rebelled against her God; they shall fall by the sword; their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.

2 And now6258 they sin2398 more and more, and have made6213 them molten4541 images of their silver,3701 and idols6091 according to their own understanding,8394 all3605 of it the work4639 of the craftsmen:2796 they say559 of them, Let the men120 that sacrifice2076 kiss5401 the calves.5697

3 Therefore3651 they shall be as the morning1242 cloud 6051and as the early7925 dew2919 that passes1980 away, as the chaff4671 that is driven5590 with the whirlwind5590 out of the floor,1637 and as the smoke6227 out of the chimney.699

4 Yet I am the LORD3068 your God430 from the land776 of Egypt,4714 and you shall know3045 no3808 god430 but me: for there is no369 savior3467 beside1115 me.

5 I did know3045 you in the wilderness,4057 in the land776 of great8514 drought.8514

6 According to their pasture,4830 so were they filled;7646 they were filled,7646 and their heart3820 was exalted;7311 therefore5921 3651 have they forgotten7911 me.

7 Therefore I will be to them as a lion:7826 as a leopard5246 by the way1870 will I observe7789 them:

8 I will meet6298 them as a bear1677 that is bereaved7909 of her whelps, and will rend7167 the lobe5458 of their heart,3820 and there8033 will I devour398 them like a lion:3833 the wild7704 beast2416 shall tear1234 them.

9 O Israel,3478 you have destroyed7843 yourself; but in me is your help.5828

10 I will165 be your king:4428 where645 is any other that may save3467 you in all3605 your cities?5892 and your judges8199 of whom834 you said,559 Give5414 me a king4428 and princes?8269

11 I gave5414 you a king4428 in my anger,639 and took3947 him away in my wrath.5678

12 The iniquity5771 of Ephraim669 is bound6887 up; his sin2403 is hid.6845

13 The sorrows2256 of a travailing3205 woman shall come935 on him: he is an unwise3808 2450 son;1121 for he should not stay5975 long in the place of the breaking4866 forth4866 of children.1121

14 I will ransom6299 them from the power3027 of the grave;7585 I will redeem1350 them from death:4194 O death,4194 I will165 be your plagues;1698 O grave,7585 I will165 be your destruction:6987 repentance5164 shall be hid5641 from my eyes.5869

15 Though3588 he be fruitful6500 among996 his brothers,251 an east6921 wind shall come,935 the wind7307 of the LORD3068 shall come5927 up from the wilderness,4057 and his spring4726 shall become dry,954 and his fountain4599 shall be dried2717 up: he shall spoil8154 the treasure214 of all3605 pleasant2532 vessels.3627

16 Samaria8111 shall become816 desolate;816 for she has rebelled4784 against her God:430 they shall fall5307 by the sword:2719 their infants5768 shall be dashed7376 in pieces, and their women with child2030 shall be ripped1234 up.
