Chapter 43

1 THE famine was very severe in the land.

2 And when they had finished eating the wheat which they had brought from Egypt, their father Jacob said to them, Go down to Egypt, and buy us a little grain.

3 And Judah said to him, The man did solemnly charge us, saying, You shall not see my face except your brother is with you.

4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy grain for ourselves;

5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, You shall not see my face except your brother is with you.

6 Then their father Israel said to them, Why did you cause me this displeasure, as to tell the man whether you had another brother?

7 And they said, The man asked us straitly about ourselves and our kindred, saying, Is your father still alive? Have you another brother? And we told him simply because of these words; could we have known in advance that he would say to us that we should bring our brother down?

8 And Judah said to Israel his father, Send the lad with us, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones.

9 And I will be surety for him; of my hands shall you require him; if I do not bring him back to you, and set him before you, then I shall be guilty before my father forever;

10 For if we had not delayed, perhaps we would have now returned a second time.

11 And their father Israel said to them, If it must be so now, then do this: take some of the best fruits of the land in your sacks, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, gum, and myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds;

12 And take double money with you; and the money that was brought back in the mouth of your sacks, take it again with you; perhaps it was an oversight;

13 Take also your brother, and arise, and go again to the man;

14 And may God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin with you. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.

15 So the men took the present, and they took double money with them, and Benjamin; and rose up and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.

16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, Bring these men into the house, and kill a sheep, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon.

17 And the servant did as Joseph had told him; and brought the men into Joseph's house.

18 And they were afraid, when they brought them into Joseph's house; and they said, It is because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time that we are brought in; so that he may seek occasion against us, and conspire against us, that they may make us slaves, and take away our asses.

19 So they came near to the steward of Joseph's house and spoke with him at the door of the house,

20 And said, We beseech you, O our lord, we truly came down at the first time to buy grain;

21 And it came to pass when we came to the inn that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; and we have brought it back again with us.

22 And we have brought other money down with us to buy grain: we did not know who put our money in our sacks.

23 He said to them, Peace be to you, fear not; your God, and the God of your father, has put a treasure in your sacks; I had your money. And he brought Simeon out to them.

24 Then the servant brought the men into Joseph's house and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he put fodder before their asses.

25 And the men made ready the present before Joseph came at noon; for they heard that they should eat bread there.

26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which they had in their hands into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the ground.

27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said to them, Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke to me? Is he still alive?

28 And they answered, Your servant our father is well. he is still alive. And they bowed down their heads and made obeisance.

29 And he raised up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said to them, Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me? And he said. May God be gracious to you, my son.

30 And Joseph made haste; for his heart did yearn for his brother; and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber and wept there.

31 Then he washed his face and went out and controlled his emotions and said, Let us eat.

32 And they served Joseph by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians, who did eat with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.

33 And they sat before him, the first-born according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth; and the men looked at one another and marveled.

34 And the servants took portions to them from before Joseph; but Benjamin's portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank and were merry with him.

1 Тем временем голод в земле ханаанской усиливался.

2 И когда иссякли все запасы зерна, привезенного из Египта, отец сказал сыновьям: «Идите опять и хоть немного купите зерна, чтобы была у нас пища».

3 Но Иуда напомнил ему: «Человек тот, о котором мы говорили тебе, строго-настрого наказывал нам не являться к нему без нашего младшего брата.

4 Если ты отпустишь его с нами, мы пойдем за зерном, чтобы была у тебя пища.

5 Если же не отпустишь, не стоит нам идти туда, ведь человек тот сказал: „Без вашего младшего брата мне и на глаза не показывайтесь!“»

6 «Надо же было вам такую беду навлечь на меня! — сетовал Иаков. — Зачем вы сказали, что у вас есть еще брат?!»

7 А они оправдывались: «Человек тот всё выспрашивал и о нас, и о наших близких: „Жив ли отец ваш? Есть ли у вас еще брат?“ Вот мы и отвечали честно на его расспросы. Разве могли мы знать, что он потребует привести к нему нашего брата?»

8 На этот раз уже не Рувим, а Иуда сказал отцу своему Израилю: «Отпусти Вениамина со мной, и мы немедленно отправимся в путь, чтобы не умереть с голоду ни нам, ни тебе, ни детям нашим.

9 За него я головой отвечаю, с меня спросишь, если с ним что случится. Если не приведу его обратно к тебе и не поставлю его перед тобой, на мне будет грех этот до конца моих дней.

10 И если бы мы не медлили, уже, верно, дважды сходили бы туда и обратно».

11 «Раз на то пошло, — сказал им Израиль, отец их, — тогда сделайте так: возьмите с собой то, чем славится земля наша: бальзам и мед виноградный, пряности и ладан, фисташки и миндаль, и отвезите это в дар тому человеку.

12 Денег же вдвое больше возьмите с собой, ведь вы должны вернуть те, что положили вам в мешки ваши, — может статься, это произошло по ошибке.

13 Берите брата вашего Вениамина и идите к тому человеку.

14 Бог Всесильный да расположит его к вам, чтобы он отпустил и брата, оставленного там вами, и Вениамина. А мне если уж суждено лишиться детей, значит, так и будет!»

15 Сыновья Иакова взяли с собой те дары, о которых говорил отец, серебра вдвое больше прежнего и поспешили вместе с Вениамином отправиться в Египет. Там они предстали перед Иосифом.

16 Как только Иосиф увидел, что Вениамин с ними, он сказал своему управляющему: «Веди этих людей ко мне в дом. В полдень они будут обедать со мной. Вели заколоть лучшее из скота и приготовить для нас».

17 Управляющий сделал, как ему было сказано: привел братьев к Иосифу в дом.

18 Ими овладел страх, как только они узнали, что их привели к дому Иосифа, и братья стали делиться между собой своими опасениями: «Нас привели сюда из-за того серебра, что в прошлый раз оказалось в мешках наших. Он хочет обвинить и наказать нас, сделать нас своими рабами и ослов наших забрать себе!»

19 Поэтому они подошли к управляющему домом Иосифа, чтобы объясниться с ним во дворе.

20 «Пожалуйста, послушай, господин наш! — начали они. — Мы один раз уже были здесь, купили зерно,

21 а когда по пути домой мы остановились на ночлег и открыли мешки свои, каждый из нас нашел в мешке, сверху, свое серебро, возвращенное ему полностью. В этот раз мы принесли его обратно.

22 И кроме него у нас с собой есть еще серебро, чтобы купить зерна. Мы не знаем, кто положил тогда серебро в мешки наши».

23 «Успокойтесь, вам нечего бояться, — сказал им управляющий. — Это, должно быть, ваш Бог, Бог отца вашего, положил для вас в мешки клад. А ваше серебро я получил сполна». Он привел к ним Симеона,

24 пригласил их войти в дом Иосифа, дал им воды омыть ноги и распорядился дать корм их ослам.

25 Ожидая прихода Иосифа к полудню, они разложили свои дары, ибо слышали, что им предстоит обедать здесь вместе с ним.

26 Когда Иосиф пришел домой, они поднесли ему дары, что были при них, и поклонились ему до земли.

27 Он спросил их о здоровье, а потом сказал: «Вы говорили мне о своем отце, старце, — жив ли он еще? Как его здоровье?»

28 «Отец наш, раб твой, жив и здоров!» — ответили они и еще раз смиренно поклонились.

29 Продолжая говорить с ними, Иосиф остановил взор на брате своем Вениамине, сыне матери своей. «Это и есть ваш младший брат, — спросил он, — тот, о котором вы говорили мне? Да явит Бог милость Свою тебе, сын мой!» — произнес он.

30 И, готовый зарыдать под наплывом нежных чувств к брату своему, поспешно удалился Иосиф в свою комнату и плакал там.

31 Потом, умывшись, он вышел и, держа себя в руках, велел подавать на стол.

32 Подавали отдельно ему, отдельно братьям и отдельно египтянам, которые обедали тут же (египтяне не едят за одним столом с евреями — считают это ниже своего достоинства).

33 Братьев рассадили перед Иосифом одного за другим по старшинству, от первенца до самого младшего, это поразило их — они смотрели друг на друга в изумлении.

34 А когда им подавали угощенья со стола Иосифа, Вениамин получал в пять раз больше, чем остальные. Так вместе с Иосифом братья пили и пировали.

2 And when they had finished eating the wheat which they had brought from Egypt, their father Jacob said to them, Go down to Egypt, and buy us a little grain.	2 И когда иссякли все запасы зерна, привезенного из Египта, отец сказал сыновьям: «Идите опять и хоть немного купите зерна, чтобы была у нас пища».
3 And Judah said to him, The man did solemnly charge us, saying, You shall not see my face except your brother is with you.	3 Но Иуда напомнил ему: «Человек тот, о котором мы говорили тебе, строго-настрого наказывал нам не являться к нему без нашего младшего брата.
4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy grain for ourselves;	4 Если ты отпустишь его с нами, мы пойдем за зерном, чтобы была у тебя пища.
5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, You shall not see my face except your brother is with you.	5 Если же не отпустишь, не стоит нам идти туда, ведь человек тот сказал: „Без вашего младшего брата мне и на глаза не показывайтесь!“»
6 Then their father Israel said to them, Why did you cause me this displeasure, as to tell the man whether you had another brother?	6 «Надо же было вам такую беду навлечь на меня! — сетовал Иаков. — Зачем вы сказали, что у вас есть еще брат?!»
7 And they said, The man asked us straitly about ourselves and our kindred, saying, Is your father still alive? Have you another brother? And we told him simply because of these words; could we have known in advance that he would say to us that we should bring our brother down?	7 А они оправдывались: «Человек тот всё выспрашивал и о нас, и о наших близких: „Жив ли отец ваш? Есть ли у вас еще брат?“ Вот мы и отвечали честно на его расспросы. Разве могли мы знать, что он потребует привести к нему нашего брата?»
8 And Judah said to Israel his father, Send the lad with us, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones.	8 На этот раз уже не Рувим, а Иуда сказал отцу своему Израилю: «Отпусти Вениамина со мной, и мы немедленно отправимся в путь, чтобы не умереть с голоду ни нам, ни тебе, ни детям нашим.
9 And I will be surety for him; of my hands shall you require him; if I do not bring him back to you, and set him before you, then I shall be guilty before my father forever;	9 За него я головой отвечаю, с меня спросишь, если с ним что случится. Если не приведу его обратно к тебе и не поставлю его перед тобой, на мне будет грех этот до конца моих дней.
10 For if we had not delayed, perhaps we would have now returned a second time.	10 И если бы мы не медлили, уже, верно, дважды сходили бы туда и обратно».
11 And their father Israel said to them, If it must be so now, then do this: take some of the best fruits of the land in your sacks, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, gum, and myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds;	11 «Раз на то пошло, — сказал им Израиль, отец их, — тогда сделайте так: возьмите с собой то, чем славится земля наша: бальзам и мед виноградный, пряности и ладан, фисташки и миндаль, и отвезите это в дар тому человеку.
12 And take double money with you; and the money that was brought back in the mouth of your sacks, take it again with you; perhaps it was an oversight;	12 Денег же вдвое больше возьмите с собой, ведь вы должны вернуть те, что положили вам в мешки ваши, — может статься, это произошло по ошибке.
13 Take also your brother, and arise, and go again to the man;	13 Берите брата вашего Вениамина и идите к тому человеку.
14 And may God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin with you. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.	14 Бог Всесильный да расположит его к вам, чтобы он отпустил и брата, оставленного там вами, и Вениамина. А мне если уж суждено лишиться детей, значит, так и будет!»
15 So the men took the present, and they took double money with them, and Benjamin; and rose up and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.	15 Сыновья Иакова взяли с собой те дары, о которых говорил отец, серебра вдвое больше прежнего и поспешили вместе с Вениамином отправиться в Египет. Там они предстали перед Иосифом.
16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, Bring these men into the house, and kill a sheep, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon.	16 Как только Иосиф увидел, что Вениамин с ними, он сказал своему управляющему: «Веди этих людей ко мне в дом. В полдень они будут обедать со мной. Вели заколоть лучшее из скота и приготовить для нас».
17 And the servant did as Joseph had told him; and brought the men into Joseph's house.	17 Управляющий сделал, как ему было сказано: привел братьев к Иосифу в дом.
18 And they were afraid, when they brought them into Joseph's house; and they said, It is because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time that we are brought in; so that he may seek occasion against us, and conspire against us, that they may make us slaves, and take away our asses.	18 Ими овладел страх, как только они узнали, что их привели к дому Иосифа, и братья стали делиться между собой своими опасениями: «Нас привели сюда из-за того серебра, что в прошлый раз оказалось в мешках наших. Он хочет обвинить и наказать нас, сделать нас своими рабами и ослов наших забрать себе!»
19 So they came near to the steward of Joseph's house and spoke with him at the door of the house,	19 Поэтому они подошли к управляющему домом Иосифа, чтобы объясниться с ним во дворе.
20 And said, We beseech you, O our lord, we truly came down at the first time to buy grain;	20 «Пожалуйста, послушай, господин наш! — начали они. — Мы один раз уже были здесь, купили зерно,
21 And it came to pass when we came to the inn that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; and we have brought it back again with us.	21 а когда по пути домой мы остановились на ночлег и открыли мешки свои, каждый из нас нашел в мешке, сверху, свое серебро, возвращенное ему полностью. В этот раз мы принесли его обратно.
22 And we have brought other money down with us to buy grain: we did not know who put our money in our sacks.	22 И кроме него у нас с собой есть еще серебро, чтобы купить зерна. Мы не знаем, кто положил тогда серебро в мешки наши».
23 He said to them, Peace be to you, fear not; your God, and the God of your father, has put a treasure in your sacks; I had your money. And he brought Simeon out to them.	23 «Успокойтесь, вам нечего бояться, — сказал им управляющий. — Это, должно быть, ваш Бог, Бог отца вашего, положил для вас в мешки клад. А ваше серебро я получил сполна». Он привел к ним Симеона,
24 Then the servant brought the men into Joseph's house and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he put fodder before their asses.	24 пригласил их войти в дом Иосифа, дал им воды омыть ноги и распорядился дать корм их ослам.
25 And the men made ready the present before Joseph came at noon; for they heard that they should eat bread there.	25 Ожидая прихода Иосифа к полудню, они разложили свои дары, ибо слышали, что им предстоит обедать здесь вместе с ним.
26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which they had in their hands into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the ground.	26 Когда Иосиф пришел домой, они поднесли ему дары, что были при них, и поклонились ему до земли.
27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said to them, Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke to me? Is he still alive?	27 Он спросил их о здоровье, а потом сказал: «Вы говорили мне о своем отце, старце, — жив ли он еще? Как его здоровье?»
28 And they answered, Your servant our father is well. he is still alive. And they bowed down their heads and made obeisance.	28 «Отец наш, раб твой, жив и здоров!» — ответили они и еще раз смиренно поклонились.

May God be gracious to you, my son.	29 Продолжая говорить с ними, Иосиф остановил взор на брате своем Вениамине, сыне матери своей. «Это и есть ваш младший брат, — спросил он, — тот, о котором вы говорили мне? Да явит Бог милость Свою тебе, сын мой!» — произнес он.
30 And Joseph made haste; for his heart did yearn for his brother; and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber and wept there.	30 И, готовый зарыдать под наплывом нежных чувств к брату своему, поспешно удалился Иосиф в свою комнату и плакал там.
31 Then he washed his face and went out and controlled his emotions and said, Let us eat.	31 Потом, умывшись, он вышел и, держа себя в руках, велел подавать на стол.
32 And they served Joseph by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians, who did eat with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.	32 Подавали отдельно ему, отдельно братьям и отдельно египтянам, которые обедали тут же (египтяне не едят за одним столом с евреями — считают это ниже своего достоинства).
33 And they sat before him, the first-born according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth; and the men looked at one another and marveled.	33 Братьев рассадили перед Иосифом одного за другим по старшинству, от первенца до самого младшего, это поразило их — они смотрели друг на друга в изумлении.

And they drank and were merry with him.	34 А когда им подавали угощенья со стола Иосифа, Вениамин получал в пять раз больше, чем остальные. Так вместе с Иосифом братья пили и пировали.
