Chapter 31

1 And it came1961 to pass in the eleventh259 6240 year,8141 in the third7992 month, in the first259 day of the month,2320 that the word1697 of the LORD3068 came1961 to me, saying,559

2 Son1121 of man,120 speak559 to Pharaoh6547 king4428 of Egypt,4714 and to his multitude;1995 Whom413 4310 are you like1819 in your greatness?1433

3 Behold,2009 the Assyrian804 was a cedar730 in Lebanon3844 with fair3303 branches,6057 and with a shadowing6751 shroud,2793 and of an high1362 stature;6967 and his top6788 was among996 the thick5688 boughs.5688

4 The waters4325 made him great,1431 the deep8415 set7311 him up on high7311 with her rivers5104 running1980 round5439 about his plants,4302 and sent7971 her little8585 rivers8585 to all3605 the trees6086 of the field.7704

5 Therefore5921 3651 his height6967 was exalted1361 above all3605 the trees6086 of the field,7704 and his boughs5634 were multiplied,7235 and his branches6288 became748 long748 because of the multitude7227 of waters,4325 when he shot7971 forth.

6 All3605 the fowls5775 of heaven8064 made their nests7077 in his boughs,5589 and under8478 his branches6288 did all3605 the beasts2416 of the field7704 bring3205 forth3205 their young, and under his shadow6738 dwelled3427 all3605 great7227 nations.1471

7 Thus was he fair3302 in his greatness,1433 in the length753 of his branches:1808 for his root8328 was by great7227 waters.4325

8 The cedars730 in the garden1588 of God430 could not hide6004 him: the fir1265 trees6086 were not like his boughs,5589 and the chestnut6196 trees6086 were not like1819 his branches;6288 nor any3605 tree6086 in the garden1588 of God430 was like1819 to him in his beauty.3308

9 I have made him fair3303 by the multitude7230 of his branches:1808 so that all3605 the trees6086 of Eden,5731 that were in the garden1588 of God,430 envied7065 him.

10 Therefore3651 thus3541 said559 the Lord136 GOD;3069 Because3282 834 you have lifted1361 up yourself in height,6967 and he has shot7971 up his top6788 among996 the thick5688 boughs,5688 and his heart3824 is lifted7311 up in his height;1363

11 I have therefore delivered5414 him into the hand3027 of the mighty410 one of the heathen;1471 he shall surely deal6213 with him: I have driven1644 him out for his wickedness.7562

12 And strangers,2114 the terrible6184 of the nations,1471 have cut3772 him off, and have left5203 him: on the mountains2022 and in all3605 the valleys1516 his branches1808 are fallen,5307 and his boughs6288 are broken7665 by all3605 the rivers650 of the land;776 and all3605 the people5971 of the earth776 are gone3381 down from his shadow,6738 and have left5203 him.

13 On his ruin4658 shall all3605 the fowls5775 of the heaven8064 remain,7931 and all3605 the beasts2416 of the field7704 shall be on his branches:6288

14 To the end4616 that none3808 of all3605 the trees6086 by the waters4325 exalt1361 themselves for their height,6967 neither3808 shoot5414 up their top6788 among413 the thick5688 boughs,5688 neither3808 their trees352 stand5975 up in their height,1363 all3605 that drink8354 water:4325 for they are all3605 delivered5414 to death,4194 to the nether8482 parts of the earth,776 in the middle8432 of the children1121 of men,120 with them that go3381 down3381 to the pit.953

15 Thus said559 the Lord136 GOD;3069 In the day3117 when he went3381 down3381 to the grave7585 I caused a mourning:56 I covered3680 the deep8415 for him, and I restrained4513 the floods5104 thereof, and the great7227 waters4325 were stayed:3607 and I caused Lebanon3844 to mourn6937 for him, and all3605 the trees6086 of the field7704 fainted5969 for him.

16 I made the nations1471 to shake7493 at the sound6963 of his fall,4658 when I cast3381 him down3381 to hell7585 with them that descend3381 into the pit:953 and all3605 the trees6086 of Eden,5731 the choice4005 and best2896 of Lebanon,3844 all3605 that drink8354 water,4325 shall be comforted5162 in the nether8482 parts of the earth.776

17 They also1571 went3381 down3381 into hell7585 with him to them that be slain2491 with the sword;2719 and they that were his arm,2220 that dwelled3427 under his shadow6738 in the middle8432 of the heathen.1471

18 To whom4310 are you thus3602 like1819 in glory3519 and in greatness1433 among the trees6086 of Eden?5731 yet shall you be brought3381 down3381 with the trees6086 of Eden5731 to the nether8482 parts of the earth:776 you shall lie7901 in the middle8432 of the uncircumcised6189 with them that be slain2491 by the sword.2719 This1931 is Pharaoh6547 and all3605 his multitude,1995 said5002 the Lord136 GOD.3069

Chapter 31

1 AND it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came to me, saying.

2 Son of man, speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his armed forces: To whom do you liken yourself in your greatness?

3 Behold, the Assyrian was like a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches giving a thick shade and of a high stature; and its top was among the thick boughs.

4 The waters made it grow, the deep made it to grow high, the rivers running round about its plants, and sent forth its branches over all the trees of the field.

5 Therefore its height was exalted above all the trees of the field, and its branches were multiplied, and its boughs became long because of many waters which caused it to grow.

6 All the fowls of the air made their nests in its boughs, and under its branches did all the beasts of the field bring forth their young, and under its shadow dwelt all great nations.

7 Thus was it beautiful in its greatness and in the multitude of its branches; for its roots were by the great waters.

8 The cedars in the garden of God could not surpass it; the fir trees did not equal its boughs; the plane trees were not like its branches; nor was any tree in the garden of God like to it in its beauty.

9 I made it beautiful by the multitude of its branches; so that all the trees of Eden that were in the garden of God envied it.

10 Therefore thus says the LORD God: Because it has exalted itself and has shot up its top among the thick boughs and its heart is haughty because of its height,

11 I have therefore delivered it into the hand of the mighty one of the nations; he shall surely deal with it according to its sin; and he shall destroy it.

12 And foreigners, the most powerful of the nations shall destroy it, and leave it upon the mountains, and its branches shall fall in all the valleys, and its boughs shall be broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the people of the earth shall go down from its shadow, and leave it alone.

13 And when it falls, all the fowls of the air shall alight upon it and all the beasts of the field shall be under its branches,

14 To the end that none of all the trees by the waters may exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their tops among the thick boughs, nor shall any of them stand up in their height like it, all that are planted by the water; for they are all delivered to death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men who go down into the pit.

15 Thus says the LORD God: On the day when it went down to Sheol, I caused a mourning; I covered the deep for it and I restrained its rivers, and the great waters were stayed; and I caused Lebanon to mourn for it, and all the trees of the field trembled for it.

16 The earth trembled at the sound of its fall, when I brought it down to Sheol with those who go down into the pit; and all the trees of Eden, the choice and the best of Lebanon, all that drink water, were comforted in the nether parts of the earth.

17 They also went down to Sheol with it to those who are slain by the sword; and its posterity dwelt under its shadow among the nations.

18 To whom are you thus like in glory and greatness among the trees of Eden? Yet you were brought down with the trees of Eden to the nether parts of the earth; you shall lie among the uncircumcised with those that are slain by the sword. This is the fate of Pharaoh and all his army, says the LORD God.
