Chapter 11

1 Now1161 faith4102 is the substance5287 of things4229 hoped1679 for, the evidence1650 of things not seen.991

2 For by it the elders4245 obtained3140 a good report.3140

3 Through faith4102 we understand3539 that the worlds165 were framed2675 by the word4487 of God,2316 so1519 that things which3588 are seen991 were not made1096 of things which do appear.5316

4 By faith4102 Abel6 offered4374 to God2316 a more excellent4119 sacrifice2378 than3844 Cain,2535 by which3739 he obtained3140 witness3140 that he was righteous,1342 God2316 testifying3140 of his gifts:1435 and by it he being dead599 yet2089 speaks.2980

5 By faith4102 Enoch1802 was translated3346 that he should not see1492 death;2288 and was not found,2147 because1360 God2316 had translated3346 him: for before4253 his translation3331 he had this testimony,3140 that he pleased2100 God.2316

6 But without5565 faith4102 it is impossible102 to please2100 him: for he that comes4334 to God2316 must1163 believe4100 that he is, and that he is a rewarder3406 of them that diligently1567 seek1567 him.

7 By faith4102 Noah,3575 being warned5537 of God of things not seen991 as yet,3369 moved2125 with fear,2125 prepared2680 an ark2787 to the saving4991 of his house;3624 by the which3739 he condemned2632 the world,2889 and became1096 heir2818 of the righteousness1343 which is by faith.4102

8 By faith4102 Abraham,11 when he was called2564 to go1831 out into1519 a place5117 which3739 he should3195 after3195 receive2983 for an inheritance,2817 obeyed;5219 and he went1831 out, not knowing1987 where4226 he went.2064

9 By faith4102 he sojourned3939 in the land1093 of promise,1860 as in a strange245 country, dwelling2730 in tabernacles4633 with Isaac2464 and Jacob,2384 the heirs4789 with him of the same promise:1860

10 For he looked1551 for a city4172 which has2192 foundations,2310 whose3739 builder5079 and maker1217 is God.2316

11 Through faith4102 also2532 Sara4564 herself846 received2983 strength1411 to conceive2602 seed,4690 and was delivered5088 of a child5088 when she was past3844 age,2244 because1893 she judged2233 him faithful4103 who had promised.1861

12 Therefore1352 sprang1080 there even2532 of one,1520 and him as good as dead,3499 so many as the stars798 of the sky3772 in multitude,4128 and as the sand285 which3588 is by the sea2281 shore5491 innumerable.382

13 These3778 all3956 died599 in faith,4102 not having received2983 the promises,1860 but having seen1492 them afar4207 off, and were persuaded3982 of them, and embraced782 them, and confessed3670 that they were strangers3581 and pilgrims3927 on1909 the earth.1093

14 For they that say3004 such5108 things declare1718 plainly1718 that they seek1934 a country.3968

15 And truly,3303 if1487 they had been mindful3421 of that country from where3739 they came1831 out, they might have2192 had2192 opportunity2540 to have returned.344

16 But now3570 they desire3713 a better2909 country, that is, an heavenly:2032 why1352 God2316 is not ashamed1870 to be called1941 their God:2316 for he has prepared2090 for them a city.4172

17 By faith4102 Abraham,11 when he was tried,3985 offered4374 up Isaac:2464 and he that had received324 the promises1860 offered4374 up his only3439 begotten3439 son,

18 Of whom3739 it was said,2980 That in Isaac2464 shall your seed4690 be called:2564

19 Accounting3049 that God2316 was able1415 to raise1453 him up, even2532 from the dead;3498 from where3606 also2532 he received2865 him in a figure.3850

20 By faith4102 Isaac2464 blessed2127 Jacob2384 and Esau2269 concerning4012 things to come.3195

21 By faith4102 Jacob,2384 when he was a dying,599 blessed2127 both1538 the sons5207 of Joseph;2501 and worshipped,4352 leaning on the top206 of his staff.4464

22 By faith4102 Joseph,2501 when he died,5053 made3421 mention3421 of the departing1841 of the children5207 of Israel;2474 and gave commandment1781 concerning4012 his bones.3747

23 By faith4102 Moses,3475 when he was born,1080 was hid2928 three5150 months5150 of his parents,3962 because1360 they saw1492 he was a proper791 child;3813 and they were not afraid5399 of the king's935 commandment.1297

24 By faith4102 Moses,3475 when he was come1096 to years,1096 3173 refused720 to be called3004 the son5207 of Pharaoh's5328 daughter;2364

25 Choosing138 rather3123 to suffer4778 affliction4778 with the people2992 of God,2316 than2228 to enjoy2192 619 the pleasures2237 of sin266 for a season;4340

26 Esteeming2233 the reproach3680 of Christ5547 greater3187 riches4149 than the treasures2344 in Egypt:125 for he had respect578 to the recompense3405 of the reward.3405

27 By faith4102 he forsook2641 Egypt,125 not fearing5399 the wrath2372 of the king:935 for he endured,2594 as seeing3708 him who is invisible.517

28 Through faith4102 he kept4160 the passover,3957 and the sprinkling4378 of blood,129 lest2443 3361 he that destroyed3645 the firstborn4416 should touch2345 them.

29 By faith4102 they passed1224 through1224 the Red2281 sea2281 as by dry3584 land: which3739 the Egyptians124 assaying3984 2983 to do were drowned.2666

30 By faith4102 the walls5038 of Jericho2410 fell4098 down, after they were compassed2944 about2944 seven2033 days.2250

31 By faith4102 the harlot4204 Rahab4460 perished4881 not with them that believed544 not, when she had received1209 the spies2685 with peace.1515

32 And what5101 shall I more2089 say?3004 for the time5550 would fail1952 me to tell1334 of Gedeon,1066 and of Barak,913 and of Samson,4546 and of Jephthae;2422 of David1138 also,5037 and Samuel,4545 and of the prophets:4396

33 Who3739 through1223 faith4102 subdued2610 kingdoms,932 worked2038 righteousness,1343 obtained2013 promises,1860 stopped5420 the mouths4750 of lions.3023

34 Quenched4570 the violence1411 of fire,4442 escaped5343 the edge4750 of the sword,3162 out of weakness769 were made1743 strong,1743 waxed1096 valiant2478 in fight,4171 turned2827 to flight5437 the armies3925 of the aliens.245

35 Women1135 received2983 their dead3498 raised386 to life again:386 and others243 were tortured,5178 not accepting4327 deliverance;629 that they might obtain5177 a better2909 resurrection:386

36 And others2087 had2983 trial3984 of cruel mockings1701 and scourgings,3148 yes,1161 moreover1161 of bonds1199 and imprisonment:5438

37 They were stoned,3034 they were sawn4249 asunder,4249 were tempted,3985 were slain1722 with the sword:3162 they wandered4022 about4022 in sheepskins3374 and goatskins;122 1192 being destitute,5302 afflicted,2346 tormented;2558

38 (Of whom3739 the world2889 was not worthy:514) they wandered4105 in deserts,2047 and in mountains,3735 and in dens4693 and caves3692 of the earth.1093

39 And these3778 all,3956 having obtained3140 a good report3140 through1223 faith,4102 received2865 not the promise:1860

40 God2316 having provided4265 some5100 better2909 thing for us, that they without5565 us should not be made5048 perfect.5048

Chapter 11

1 NOW faith is the substance of things hoped for, just as it was the substance of things which have come to pass; and it is the evidence of things not seen,

2 And in this way it became a testimonial of the elders.

3 For it is through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen came to be from those which are not seen.

4 It was by faith, Abel offered a more excellent sacrifice to God than Cain, and because of this, he received a testimonial that he was righteous, and God testified to his offering: therefore, even though he is dead, he speaks.

5 By faith Enoch departed and did not taste death, and he was not found, because God transferred him: but before he took him away, there was a testimonial about him, that he pleased God.

6 Without faith, man cannot please God: for he who comes near to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.

7 By faith Noah, when he was warned concerning the things not seen, became fearful and he made an ark to save his household, and by it he condemned the world and he became heir of righteousness which is by faith.

8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to depart for the land which he was to receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.

9 By faith he became a sojourner in the land which was promised him as in a strange country, and he dwelt in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

10 For he looked for a city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

11 Through faith also Sarah who was barren, received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she was sure that he who had promised her was faithful.

12 Therefore, there sprang from one who was as good as dead, as many as the stars of the sky in number, and as the sand which is on the sea shore innumerable.

13 These all died in faith not having received the promised land, but they saw it from afar off, and rejoiced in it; and they acknowledged that they were strangers and pilgrims on earth.

14 For they who speak so, declare plainly that they seek a country for themselves.

15 And if they had a desire for that very country from which they went out, they had time to return to it again.

16 But now it is evident, that they desire a better city, that city which is in heaven: therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he has prepared for them a city.

17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac: he lifted upon the altar his only begotten son, even that very one who had been received in the promise.

18 Of whom it was said, In Isaac shall thy seed be called:

19 And he reasoned in himself, It is possible for God even to raise the dead, and because of this Isaac was given to him as a parable.

20 By faith in the things to come Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau.

21 By faith Jacob, when be was dying, blessed both of the sons of Joseph, and he worshipped, leaning upon the head of his staff.

22 By faith Joseph, when he died made mention of the departure of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.

23 By faith the parents of Moses, hid him for three months after his birth, because they saw that the infant boy was fair; and they were not afraid of the King's commandment.

24 By faith Moses, when he came to manhood, refused to be called the son of Pha'raoh's daughter.

25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short while.

26 And he reasoned that the reproach of Christ was greater riches than the treasures of Egypt: for he looked forward to be paid the reward.

27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; and he survived after he had seen God, who is invisible.

28 Through faith he instituted the passover, and sprinkled the blood, lest he who destroyed the first-born should touch them.

29 By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land: but in it the Egyptians were drowned when they made the attempt.

30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were being encompassed seven days.

31 By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish with those who were disobedient, for she had received the spies in peace.

32 And what more shall I say? for time would fail me to tell of Gideon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jeph'tha-e, and of David also, and Samuel, and of the rest of the prophets:

33 Who through faith conquered kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,

34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, and became valiant in battle, and routed the camps of enemies;

35 Restored to women their sons, raised from the dead: while others died through tortures, not hoping for deliverance; that they might have a better resurrection:

36 Others endured mockings and scourgings, still others were delivered to bonds and imprisonment:

37 Others were stoned, others were sawn apart, others died by the edge of the sword: others wandered about, wearing sheep skins and goat skins; destitute, afflicted and tormented;

38 Of whom the world was not worthy: they wandered as though lost in the desert, and in mountains, and in dens and in caves of the earth.

39 Thus these all, having obtained a testimonial through the faith, did not receive the promise:

40 Because God, from the beginning, provided for our help lest, without us, they should not be made perfect.

4 It was by faith, Abel offered a more excellent sacrifice to God than Cain, and because of this, he received a testimonial that he was righteous, and God testified to his offering: therefore, even though he is dead, he speaks.

5 By faith4102 Enoch1802 was translated3346 that he should not see1492 death;2288 and was not found,2147 because1360 God2316 had translated3346 him: for before4253 his translation3331 he had this testimony,3140 that he pleased2100 God.2316

6 Without faith, man cannot please God: for he who comes near to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.

7 By faith Noah, when he was warned concerning the things not seen, became fearful and he made an ark to save his household, and by it he condemned the world and he became heir of righteousness which is by faith.

8 By faith4102 Abraham,11 when he was called2564 to go1831 out into1519 a place5117 which3739 he should3195 after3195 receive2983 for an inheritance,2817 obeyed;5219 and he went1831 out, not knowing1987 where4226 he went.2064

8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to depart for the land which he was to receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.

9 By faith4102 he sojourned3939 in the land1093 of promise,1860 as in a strange245 country, dwelling2730 in tabernacles4633 with Isaac2464 and Jacob,2384 the heirs4789 with him of the same promise:1860

9 By faith he became a sojourner in the land which was promised him as in a strange country, and he dwelt in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

10 For he looked for a city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

11 Through faith4102 also2532 Sara4564 herself846 received2983 strength1411 to conceive2602 seed,4690 and was delivered5088 of a child5088 when she was past3844 age,2244 because1893 she judged2233 him faithful4103 who had promised.1861

11 Through faith also Sarah who was barren, received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she was sure that he who had promised her was faithful.

12 Therefore1352 sprang1080 there even2532 of one,1520 and him as good as dead,3499 so many as the stars798 of the sky3772 in multitude,4128 and as the sand285 which3588 is by the sea2281 shore5491 innumerable.382

15 And if they had a desire for that very country from which they went out, they had time to return to it again.

16 But now3570 they desire3713 a better2909 country, that is, an heavenly:2032 why1352 God2316 is not ashamed1870 to be called1941 their God:2316 for he has prepared2090 for them a city.4172

16 But now it is evident, that they desire a better city, that city which is in heaven: therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he has prepared for them a city.

17 By faith4102 Abraham,11 when he was tried,3985 offered4374 up Isaac:2464 and he that had received324 the promises1860 offered4374 up his only3439 begotten3439 son,

17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac: he lifted upon the altar his only begotten son, even that very one who had been received in the promise.

18 Of whom3739 it was said,2980 That in Isaac2464 shall your seed4690 be called:2564

18 Of whom it was said, In Isaac shall thy seed be called:

19 And he reasoned in himself, It is possible for God even to raise the dead, and because of this Isaac was given to him as a parable.

20 By faith4102 Isaac2464 blessed2127 Jacob2384 and Esau2269 concerning4012 things to come.3195

20 By faith in the things to come Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau.

21 By faith4102 Jacob,2384 when he was a dying,599 blessed2127 both1538 the sons5207 of Joseph;2501 and worshipped,4352 leaning on the top206 of his staff.4464

21 By faith Jacob, when be was dying, blessed both of the sons of Joseph, and he worshipped, leaning upon the head of his staff.

22 By faith4102 Joseph,2501 when he died,5053 made3421 mention3421 of the departing1841 of the children5207 of Israel;2474 and gave commandment1781 concerning4012 his bones.3747

22 By faith Joseph, when he died made mention of the departure of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.

23 By faith4102 Moses,3475 when he was born,1080 was hid2928 three5150 months5150 of his parents,3962 because1360 they saw1492 he was a proper791 child;3813 and they were not afraid5399 of the king's935 commandment.1297

23 By faith the parents of Moses, hid him for three months after his birth, because they saw that the infant boy was fair; and they were not afraid of the King's commandment.

24 By faith4102 Moses,3475 when he was come1096 to years,1096 3173 refused720 to be called3004 the son5207 of Pharaoh's5328 daughter;2364

24 By faith Moses, when he came to manhood, refused to be called the son of Pha'raoh's daughter.

25 Choosing138 rather3123 to suffer4778 affliction4778 with the people2992 of God,2316 than2228 to enjoy2192 619 the pleasures2237 of sin266 for a season;4340

25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short while.

26 Esteeming2233 the reproach3680 of Christ5547 greater3187 riches4149 than the treasures2344 in Egypt:125 for he had respect578 to the recompense3405 of the reward.3405

26 And he reasoned that the reproach of Christ was greater riches than the treasures of Egypt: for he looked forward to be paid the reward.

27 By faith4102 he forsook2641 Egypt,125 not fearing5399 the wrath2372 of the king:935 for he endured,2594 as seeing3708 him who is invisible.517

27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; and he survived after he had seen God, who is invisible.

28 Through faith4102 he kept4160 the passover,3957 and the sprinkling4378 of blood,129 lest2443 3361 he that destroyed3645 the firstborn4416 should touch2345 them.

28 Through faith he instituted the passover, and sprinkled the blood, lest he who destroyed the first-born should touch them.

29 By faith4102 they passed1224 through1224 the Red2281 sea2281 as by dry3584 land: which3739 the Egyptians124 assaying3984 2983 to do were drowned.2666

29 By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land: but in it the Egyptians were drowned when they made the attempt.

30 By faith4102 the walls5038 of Jericho2410 fell4098 down, after they were compassed2944 about2944 seven2033 days.2250

30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were being encompassed seven days.

31 By faith4102 the harlot4204 Rahab4460 perished4881 not with them that believed544 not, when she had received1209 the spies2685 with peace.1515

31 By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish with those who were disobedient, for she had received the spies in peace.

32 And what more shall I say? for time would fail me to tell of Gideon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jeph'tha-e, and of David also, and Samuel, and of the rest of the prophets:

34 Quenched4570 the violence1411 of fire,4442 escaped5343 the edge4750 of the sword,3162 out of weakness769 were made1743 strong,1743 waxed1096 valiant2478 in fight,4171 turned2827 to flight5437 the armies3925 of the aliens.245

34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, and became valiant in battle, and routed the camps of enemies;

35 Women1135 received2983 their dead3498 raised386 to life again:386 and others243 were tortured,5178 not accepting4327 deliverance;629 that they might obtain5177 a better2909 resurrection:386

35 Restored to women their sons, raised from the dead: while others died through tortures, not hoping for deliverance; that they might have a better resurrection:

36 And others2087 had2983 trial3984 of cruel mockings1701 and scourgings,3148 yes,1161 moreover1161 of bonds1199 and imprisonment:5438

36 Others endured mockings and scourgings, still others were delivered to bonds and imprisonment:

37 They were stoned,3034 they were sawn4249 asunder,4249 were tempted,3985 were slain1722 with the sword:3162 they wandered4022 about4022 in sheepskins3374 and goatskins;122 1192 being destitute,5302 afflicted,2346 tormented;2558

37 Others were stoned, others were sawn apart, others died by the edge of the sword: others wandered about, wearing sheep skins and goat skins; destitute, afflicted and tormented;

38 (Of whom3739 the world2889 was not worthy:514) they wandered4105 in deserts,2047 and in mountains,3735 and in dens4693 and caves3692 of the earth.1093

38 Of whom the world was not worthy: they wandered as though lost in the desert, and in mountains, and in dens and in caves of the earth.

39 And these3778 all,3956 having obtained3140 a good report3140 through1223 faith,4102 received2865 not the promise:1860

39 Thus these all, having obtained a testimonial through the faith, did not receive the promise:

40 God2316 having provided4265 some5100 better2909 thing for us, that they without5565 us should not be made5048 perfect.5048

40 Because God, from the beginning, provided for our help lest, without us, they should not be made perfect.
