Chapter 25

1 THEN again Abraham took another wife, and her name was Kenturah.

2 And she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

3 And Jokshan begot Sheba and Daran. And the sons of Daran were Asshurim, Letushim, and Ammim.

4 And the sons of Midian were Ephah, Haphar, Hanoch, Abidah, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Kenturah.

5 And Abraham gave everything that he had to Isaac.

6 But to the sons of his concubine, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac, his son, eastward to the east country, while he was still alive.

7 And these are the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived, a hundred and seventy-five years.

8 Then Abraham became sick, and died in a good old age, an old man satisfied with his days; and was gathered to his people.

9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the double cave, (Machpelah) which is in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre;

10 The field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth, as a possession for a burial ground. There was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.

11 And it came to pass after the death of Abraham that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well of Khaya-khezan (The Well of The Living One who saw me).

12 Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's maid, bore to Abraham;

13 And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the first-born of Ishmael, Nebioth, and Kedar, Arbal, and Mibsam,

14 Mishma, Romah, Massa,

15 Hadar, Tema, Nator, Naphish, and Kedem.

16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names by their villages and by their sheepfolds, twelve princes according to their nations.

17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, a hundred and thirty-seven years; and he became sick and died; and was gathered to his people.

18 And they dwelt from Havilah as far as Shud, which extends from the border of Egypt to the gateway of Assyria; he dwelt adjacent to the lands of all his brethren.

19 These are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham begot Isaac;

20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Padan-aram, the sister of Laban, the Aramean (Syrian).

21 And Isaac prayed before the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD answered him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

22 And the children struggled together within her womb; and she said, If it is to be like this, why do I live? So she went to enquire of the LORD.

23 And the LORD said to her, Two peoples are in your womb, and two nations shall be separated from your body; and the one nation shall be stronger than the other nation; and the elder shall serve the younger.

24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

25 And the first came out red, all covered with ringlets of hair; and they called his name Esau.

26 And after him his brother came forth, and his hand held Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah bore them.

27 And the boys grew up; and Esau became an expert hunter, a man of outdoor life; but Jacob was a simple man, living in a tent.

28 And Isaac was fond of Esau, because he ate of Esau's game; but Rebekah was fond of Jacob.

29 And Jacob cooked pottage, and behold, his brother Esau came in from the field, and he was very hungry;

30 And Esau said to Jacob, Give me some of that pottage, for I am famished; that is why he was called Edom.

31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day your birthright.

32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point of death; and what profit shall a birthright be to me?

33 And Jacob said to him, Swear to me this day; and he swore to him; and he sold his birthright to Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage; and he ate, and drank, and rose up and went his way; thus Esau despised his birthright.

2 Кетура родила Зимрана, Иокшана, Медана, Мадиама, Ишбака и Шуаха.

3 Иокшан был отцом Севы и Дедана, от Дедана же произошли ассуры, летуши и леюмы.

4 Сыновьями Мадиама были: Ефа, Ефер, Ханох, Авида и Елдага. Все эти сыновья родились от брака Авраама и Кетуры.

5 Перед своей смертью Авраам одарил своих сыновей, рождённых от наложниц, и отправил их на восток, подальше от Исаака, а потом одарил его всем, чем владел.

7 Авраам дожил до 175 лет,

8 а потом ослабел и умер. Он прожил хорошую и долгую жизнь, а после смерти воссоединился со своими предками.

9 Сыновья Исаак и Измаил похоронили его к востоку от Мамре, в пещере Махпела на поле Ефрона, сына Цохара,

10 в той самой пещере, которую Авраам купил у хеттеев. Там Авраама похоронили с его женой Саррой.

11 После смерти Авраама Бог благословил Исаака. Исаак жил в Беер-Лахай-Рои.

12 Вот родословная Измаила, сына Авраама и египтянки Агари, Сарриной служанки,

13 и вот имена сыновей Измаила: первенец Наваиоф, за ним Кедар, Адбеел, Мивсам,

14 Мишма, Дума, Масса,

15 Гадад, Фема, Иетур, Нафиш и Кедма.

16 Это были имена сыновей Измаила. У каждого сына был свой стан, который потом стал небольшим городом, и эти сыновей были вождями своих племён.

17 Измаил прожил 137 лет, а потом умер и воссоединился со своими предками.

18 Потомки Измаила ставили свои станы по всей пустыне от Хавилы до Сура, на границе с Египтом, и от Сура до самой Ассирии, и часто нападали на народ его братьев.

19 Вот родословная Исаака: у Авраама был сын по имени Исаак.

20 Когда Исааку исполнилось сорок лет, он женился на Ревекке из Падан-Арама, дочери арамеянина Вафуила и сестре арамеянина Лавана.

21 Жена Исаака не могла иметь детей, но когда Исаак помолился Господу за свою жену, то Господь, услышав молитву Исаака, сделал так, что Ревекка забеременела.

22 Во время беременности Ревекки дети часто бились у неё внутри. Она помолилась Господу и спросила: «Почему это со мной такое происходит?»

23 И ответил ей Господь: «У тебя во чреве два племени, от тебя родятся главы двух разных семей, и разделятся они: один сын будет сильнее другого, и старший сын будет служить младшему».

24 Когда пришло её время, Ревекка родила близнецов.

25 Первый родился весь красный, кожа у него была словно мохнатое одеяние, и потому назвали его Исавом.

26 Когда же родился второй, он крепко держался за пятку Исава, и потому его назвали Иаковом. Исааку было 60 лет, когда они родились.

27 Мальчики выросли. Исав стал искусным охотником и любил проводить время в полях, Иаков же был тихим человеком, проводившим всё время в шатре.

28 Исаак любил Исава, потому что дичь, которую приносил Исав, была ему по вкусу, а Ревекка любила Иакова.

29 Однажды Исав пришёл домой с охоты усталый и обессилевший от голода. Иаков в это время готовил чечевичную похлёбку.

30 И сказал Исав Иакову: «Я обессилел от голода, дай мне немного этих красных бобов». (Потому и дали ему прозвище Едом).

31 Но Иаков ответил: «Продай мне твоё право первородства».

32 «Я умираю от голода, и если я умру, то к чему мне богатство моего отца? Я отдам тебе свою долю», — сказал Исав.

33 Но Иаков сказал: «Прежде всего поклянись, что отдашь». Исав поклялся Иакову и продал ему свою долю богатства их отца,

34 и тогда Иаков дал Исаву еду и хлеб. Исав, съев и выпив всё, что дал ему Иаков, ушёл. Тем самым Исав пренебрёг своим правом первородства.

1 THEN again Abraham took another wife, and her name was Kenturah.
